4 // 2011-12 ILLINOIS MEN’S GOLF COACHING STAFF ZACH GUTHRIE ASSISTANT COACH // FIFTH SEASON Over the past four seasons, Zach Guthrie has been instrumental in the success of Illinois golf. He is involved in all aspects of the program including recruiting, planning and administration of the Steve Stricker Illini Classic and Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational, and serving as director of the Demirjian Indoor Golf Facility.

Guthrie has overseen the growth of the Olympia Fields tournament into one of the most respected nationally.

Illinois has qualified for the NCAA Tournament each of the four years Guthrie has been on staff. The program is one of just seven schools nationally with that disctinction. The Illini have won three Big Ten championships and 21 tournaments in that span. Guthrie has also helped coach two first-team All-Americans.

Guthrie graduated summa cum laude from Western Illinois University with a bachelor of business degree in economics. He was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team, was selected a Golf Coaches Association of America All-America Scholar and earned three All-Mid-Continent Conference Academic honors. In addition, Guthrie earned the team’s Senior Leadership Award in 2007.

On the course, Guthrie was a key contributor to one of the most successful stretches in WIU golf history. During his collegiate playing career, he helped WIU qualify for NCAA postseason play three times as well as claim three Mid- Continent Conference Championships. He was co-medalist at the 2005 Pizza Hut/Bell South Invitational and fired a career-best round of 68 at the Beu/Mussatto Classic that season.

“Zach’s college experience as a student and an athlete bode well for his future in coaching,” head coach Mike Small said. “We have felt the benefit of his influence on our program. He shows all the qualities that are needed to be a solid collegiate coach.”

OLYMPIA FIELDS COUNTRY CLUB/FIGHTING ILLINI INVITATIONAL Illinois hosted the Sixth Annual Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational Sept. 16-18, 2011 at the famed Olympia Fields Country Club. The Olympia Fields North Course is ranked No. 36 on Golf Digest’s Top 100 golf courses nationally. Olympia Fields C.C. has hosted four majors, most recently the 2003 U.S. Open.

Ten of the competing teams were ranked in the Golf World/Nike Coaches preseason Top-25 poll -- No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 3 Alabama, No. 5 Texas, No. 7 Florida, No. 8 Duke, No. 9 Auburn, No. 12 Stanford, No. 13 Illinois, No. 20 Ohio State and No. 22 Augusta State, who is the two-time defending NCAA team champion. Three other squads, Arizona State, Florida State and Northwestern, received votes in the poll while Indiana and Notre Dame round out the field.

Illinois head coach Mike Small was invited to be an honorary member of the Olympia Fields Country Club in 2007, becoming the first to receive such a membership since 2003 when was honored with the invitation. “The tournament is run as a first-class event by the members here,” Small said. “It means a lot to the University of Illinois to be associated with Olympia Fields, and I know it means a lot to Olympia Fields to put on such a great event. The two have come together great.”
