Policy G6 New Development in the Conservation Area New development in the Conservation Area is required to respond positively to the area’s distinctive character and should be designed to enhance the setting of existing buildings and open spaces. Designs should seek to maintain the existing height and scale of buildings in the two character areas as described in the Conservation Area Appraisal. In Character Area 1, buildings should consider carefully the surrounding buildings and be of 2 or 3 storeys, with pitched roofs and front the back of pavement or be set behind low stone walls and small front gardens. In Character Area 2 development should be less dense and more rural in character, with a maximum of two storeys. Use of traditional materials is encouraged including incorporation of the following: 7 - Yorkshire gritstone for walls, set in random courses - Tooled gritstone around windows and for gateposts - Grey slates for roofing such as Yoredale sandstone and Westmoreland slates - Timber framed windows. Upvc replacement windows detract from the character of the Conservation Area and are not encouraged. Renumber other policies.
