Plastic was not quite as availablein those days. Our so called course pro at the time seldom played the game and never returned phone calls. (He was eventually deposed.) It was in March of 1983 that a friend sent me a Discovering the World catalogue (thenoperated out of Davis, CA by Ron Kaufma.nn) and I was excited. I ordered a 50 mold, another40 mold, a 100 mold, a 40 mold for Lynne, and a new disc--the 71 mold. Also in this issue was an advertisement for the Professional Disc Golf Association. It wasn‘t until May that I decided to pay the $15 and became #2458. The first Kansas City Wide Open happened in June and it was my first ever pro event. As a 34-year old, I was intrigued to discover that a masters division existed for those 35 and over. As it was, I placed last and lost my Kitty Hawk Driver in a pond trying to get off an island in a 35 MPH wind. I was distraught. I went into thepond and stomped around, until I cut myself on a piece of glass. I was not a happy person. Just previous to thisevent, the PDGA had held an election on weight rules. At theWide Open, theyheld an vote on whetheror not to use the new weight restrictions. I rememberasking myself whether or not it was legal to have such a popular vote. Anyway,it was voted thatifyou bring it, you flingit. I realized thenthat as a "Pro", you paid your money and took your chances. Later thatsummer, Lyrme and I took a tour through Iowa, visiting disc golf courses in Council Bluffs, Ft. Dodge, Cedar Falls (first time I broke 50), and Keokuk. It was during thistrip thatthe idea occurred to me thatthere might be money to be made in promoting disc golf and selling its equipment. How we formed a club, ousted our local pro, how DGWN evolved, and how I became involved withthe leadership of the PDGA is anotherstory altogether. The point I want to make is always assume thatinformation you pass to newer golfers might just plant the seed of heavier involvement. Had my friend not shared his Discovering the World catalogue, the whole process of my involvementof the game would have been diflerent. So, share your written materials and your knowledge with new players. Your thoughtful generosity might produce a life long disc golf enthusiastwith somethingto contribute to the sport.naw~ Dlsceolwoddflom-Summotl99l 3 CHAIN LETTERS Thanks for the great mag. Regional Qualifying Events A total of five (5) positions will be awarded at each Regional Qualifier. The top five (5) overall scores will earn an invitation to compete. Other divisions may be eligible to qualify if they are competing during identical days and course layouts as competitors in the Open Division. This is to be determined by each tournament director at his or her respective qualifying event. Any player finishing in the top five (5) who has qualified at an earlier event, or who has received an exemption or special invitation, will be excluded. Players shooting the next lowest score will become eligible. In case of a tie for the final position, the tournament director may: 1) hold a sudden death playoff to determine the winner, 2) award the spot to the player with the lowest final round score, or 3) award the spot to the player with the highest (current) PDGA Player Rating. Each position must be verified by the tournament director immediately following the event. A player may only qualify once via Regional Qualifying events. Players earning eligibility at Regional Qualifiers have 30 days to submit an application for entry along with full payment to guarantee their position in the field. This time period begins immediately following the completion of each event. Any player missing their deadline for entry automatically forfeits eligibility and may not re-qualify at Regional or Global Qualifying events.

  • 1 a Method for Mathematically Comparing the Performances Of
A Method for Mathematically Comparing the Performances of Disc Golf Courses By Steve West Disc Golf, LLC February 10, 2020 It is known that some disc golf courses are better tests of skill than others. This paper presents a method to compare how well disc golf courses perform against each according to their ability to sort players by skill. Method The job of a disc golf course is to rank players by how well they play that day. (Fun and entertainment are hobbies.) This means handing out different scores to different players in a way that is not random. The amount of information in a set of scores given out to a specific group of players can be represented by the Scoring Spread Width of Total Scores. Scoring Spread Width = 2 raised to the absolute value of the sum of the frequency of each score times the log2 of the frequency. However, there is not an absolute scale for what is a “good” spread, because the spread is heavily dependent on the number of players being observed and the range of their skill levels. A course that was played by everyone at Am Worlds will obviously have a much wider Scoring Spread of Total Scores than a course which was played only by the finalists of the Open division at a small tournament. Therefore, the group of players to be observed needs to be standardized before course performances can be compared to each other. One way to standardize the set of plaeyrs would be to find a core group of players that play a lot of tournaments, then evaluate all courses based on the Scoring Spread Width of Total Scores they assigned to the core group.
