.03 SUBARU BOXER ENGINE 30

# Every engine generates power. But the unique SUBARU BOXER engine empowers the driving enthusiast with so much more. The flat, horizontally opposed configuration gives the WRX a lower center of gravity for more precise, stable handling. The result is a car that goes where you want it to, whether you’re conquering a mountain pass or navigating the urban jungle. And the design delivers its aggressive power with the inherent smoothness, efficiency and More Than 340 durability that make driving a WRX more enjoyable every day. The engine is named after the jabbing motion of a boxer’s arms, and with endurance and efficiency to match its powerful thrust, it packs quite a punch.

#) .THIS WEEK a delegation from Tateyama, Japan is in Bellingham to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the two cities’ Sister City relationship. Actually, Bellingham has four Sister Cities, -*../# but Tateyama was the first. It all began in the late 1950s, a time when the Port of Bellingham hosted many cargo ships. As a goodwill gesture—and simply because “Johnny” was a smiling, friendly guy—Mayor John Westford often walked down to the port to say hello to the ship captains. He sometimes +$!$ invited them home for dinner. One evening Westford and a Tateyama-based captain agreed our two cities should have a AN INFORMAL HISTORY OF Sister City designation, and so the formalities began in 1958. Mayor Westford and his friend, Jack Pierce, son of the Leopold Hotel’s owner, soon visited Tateyama and, in turn, hosted a SISTER CITIES TATEYAMA Japanese group here. With his breezy manner Johnny (Westford) bestowed American names on his Japanese counterparts and kidded around—disregarding their formal culture. He melt- AND BELLINGHAM ed the Asian reserve with aplomb. BY JOANN ROE The Sister City relationships were initiated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower after World War II as a means to “heal the wounds of war.” The program was placed under the State De- partment associated with the People-to-People efforts. Governmental participation in the Sister Cities relationship is hands off, except for assistance in finding a suitable city or granting funds on rare occasions. The management of alliances is left almost entirely to the volunteers. Today, Sister Cities exist worldwide and not just between American cities and others. Bellingham was one of the very first to take on a sister, as was Seattle, which paired with Kobe—a port city, too. For more than two decades, Bellingham/Tateyama’s relationship was quite casual.
