  • Depicting the Prophet's Grave in North African Devotional Books
Journal of Material Cultures in the Muslim World 1 (2020) 331–354 brill.com/mcmw Material Images and Mental Ziyāra: Depicting the Prophet’s Grave in North African Devotional Books (Dalāʾil al-Khayrā t) Hiba Abid Post-doctoral fellow, Centre for Social Research on Religion and École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Paris, France [email protected] Abstract The Dalāʾil al-Khayrā t (Guidelines to the Blessings) is a very popular book of prayers over the Prophet Muḥammad, originally written around the mid-fifteenth century by Muḥammad b. Sulaymān al-Jazūlī (d. 869/1465). The Dalāʾil is probably the only illustrated religious text in the Maghreb, where the image has been the subject of more profound reluctance than in the rest of the Muslim world. They show the sacred tomb of the Prophet inside the mosque of Medina, as well as his minbar, his miḥrāb and his sandals (naʿl), one of the most venerated relics in Islam. If the images in North African books have been systematically interpreted in a superficial way, this article proposes a reading at the crossroads of art history, codicology and a careful examination of the main text and the precious annotations added by the readers of some unpublished manu- scripts. We will then understand that these illustrations have gradually acquired an autonomous place within the book. They act alongside the text, as memorial images of the sacred space host- ing the holy body of the Prophet, and as a virtual substitute for the pilgrimage to Medina. It is in fact through this act, be it physical or virtual, that Muslims hope to visualize, in a dream, the figure of their loved one, Muḥammad.

  • The Impact of the Netherlandish Art on Persian Miniature in Safavid Era 1588
The impact of the Netherlandish art on Persian Miniature in Safavid era 1588 - 1722 by Forough Sajadi Supervisor Professor Antoni Ziemba Warsaw of University Department of history February 2020 1/93 Abstract This dissertation focuses on the impact of Netherlandish art on the development of Farangi Sāzi in the Safavid period during 1588-1722. This impact was examined in two parts: first, examining a group of the Europeanized artworks that were executed by Persian royal painters, and second, the sojourn of eleven Netherlandish painters in Persia, specifically the service of three painters in the royal library. The study will then argue to what extent these two stories are correlated or independent.\ Key words: Muhammad Zamān, ʿAli Quli Jabbādār, Farangi Sāzi, Safavid painting, Netherlandish art. 2/93 Acknowledgement I wish to show my gratitude to my supervisor, professor Antoni Ziemba, who sustainably supported me during my Ph.D. research since February 2014. I would like to pay my special regards to professor Frans Grijzenhout at the University of Amsterdam, who allowed me to carry out my research at Amsterdam Centre for the Study of the Golden Age (ACSGA) during 2017-2018. Moreover, I owe a special debt of gratitude to the Andrew Mellon Foundation and the Rijksmuseum. Within September 2018- September 2020 Rijksmuseum hosted me as the Andrew Mellon Fellow, wherein I was honored to have two advisors; Dr. Gregor Weber and Dr. Jan de Hond. Relying on the financial support of the Andrew Mellon foundation I could visit different collections worldwide and examine my case studies. Also, I would like to recognize the invaluable assistance that I got from my immediate family, in particular, my mother Zahra, my sister Sarah and my friend Dr.

  • The Coming of Islam to Balkh
chapter 8 The Coming of Islam to Balkh Arezou Azad and Hugh Kennedy 1 Introduction The coming of the Muslim armies to Central Asia from 650 onwards and the subsequent settlement of Arabs in and around the main urban centers had a profound and lasting effect on the urban topography of the area. The recon- figured city of Balkh extended beyond the city walls to the surrounding coun- tryside, fulfilling a central role in commercial, religious, military and admin- istrative activities. Urban institutions and structures thus served to establish Balkh’s position in the region and ensure control of the surrounding popula- tions which contributed to the city’s role. There are four major urban centers in greater Khurāsān – Balkh, Bukhara, Merv, and Samarqand. Of these, Balkh, until recently, has been the least understood and the least researched.1 The archaeological site of pre-modern Balkh is situated in northern Afghanistan. Much of the site remains unaffected by modern development and open for archaeological and historical investigation. The purpose of this joint paper is to set the developments at Balkh, in so far as we can determine them, in the wider context of the history of urbanism in Central Asia and to give some indi- cation how further archaeological research might shed light on the evolution of the city in the early Islamic period. 2 The Sources The sources we have at our disposal are both textual and archaeological. The textual material consists mainly of narratives that are useful to the topic of this chapter.2 Bactrian documents discovered in the 1990s are an invaluable source 1 Much headway has been made thanks to the Balkh Art and Cultural Heritage project (BACH) run out of the University of Oxford, 2011–2015.

  • 9 Evidence for Central Asia
Lauren Morris 9 Evidence for Central Asia I Introduction Recent research indicates that smaller scale networks of interaction in prehistoric Central and Inner Asia prefigure the later macro-networks of interaction and ex- change of Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages now conventionally referred to as the Silk Road(s).1 Likewise, archaeobotanical research has highlighted the occur- rence of trans-Eurasian exchange via crop transmission through, from, and into Central and Inner Asia during the early third millennium .2 Yet it remains difficult to analyze the specific economic developments which occurred in the orbit of the empires controlling Central Asia within the time window of 300 –300 – that is, the Greek Kingdoms and the Kushan Empire– although these developments should have constituted a key step in generating the heighten- ed connectivity and mobility across Afro-Eurasia by which the Silk Road paradigm is characterized. Perhaps the main hurdle is that the available source profile for this period is simply demanding: it is uneven, obscure, represents a diversity of cultural and intellectual perspectives (both ancient and modern), and often seems too frag- mentary and incommensurate to invite the development of broader conclusions. Thus, the aim of the present chapter is to clarify the shape of this source profile. Rather than aiming for comprehensiveness, I lay out the four main metacategories of data available for studying economic history and development within the pur- view of the Greek Kingdoms and the Kushan Empire: transmitted texts, coinage, archaeological data, and excavated texts, indicating the potentials and problemat- ics of each throughout. • Representation of Non-Western Cultural Knowledge on Wikipedia: the Case of the Visual Arts
Preprints (www.preprints.org) | NOT PEER-REVIEWED | Posted: 29 April 2021 doi:10.20944/preprints202104.0770.v1 Representation of Non-Western Cultural Knowledge on Wikipedia: The Case of the Visual Arts Waqās Ahmed Visiting Fellow, The Open University Founding Faculty and Asst Professor, London Interdisciplinary School Artistic Director, The Khalili Collections Steering Panel, Art UK (corresponding author) Dr Martin Poulter Wikimedian-in-Residence at the Khalili Collections Abstract We explore gaps in Wikipedia's coverage of the visual arts by comparing the representation of 100 artists and 100 artworks from the Western canon against corresponding sets of notable artists and artworks from non-Western cultures. We measure the coverage of these two sets of topics across Wikipedia as a whole and for its individual language versions. We also compare the coverage for Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata, sister-projects of Wikipedia that host digital media and structured data. We show that all these platforms strongly favour the Western canon, giving many times more coverage to Western art. We highlight specific examples of differing coverage of visual art inside and outside the Western canon. We find that European language versions of Wikipedia are generally more "Western" in their coverage and Asian languages more "global", with interesting exceptions. We suggest how both Wikipedia and the wider cultural sector can address this gap in content and thus give Wikipedia a truly global perspective on the visual arts.
