This year a number of prestigious events and seminars were organized on our campus. Visits by the Local Inquiry Committees have also been satisfactorily carried out. Induction programs were organized for First Year and Second Year students during the months of August and September to acclimatize newly admitted students to the VIT educational experience. We bid farewell to our graduating students on Convocation Day (Degree Distribution Ceremony) for the 2018 batch and Graduation Day for 2019 batch. The annual festival Verve’19 proved to be a wonderful platform for students to hone their extra-curricular talents, organizing, event management and teamwork abilities. The need for our students to be able to not only match up but also stand out amongst the multitude of engineers who graduate every year was reiterated on many occasions by guest lectures by industry personnel and educational visits. Key inputs have been obtained and many valuable connections have been established in both academic and industry circles. Considering the increased competition in the job market, the technical abilities of our students were scaled up by these sessions. The Institute has also greatly streamlined its human resources processes so as to increase efficiency of all our staff members and focus on greater development and growth for our students. While the Institute has always placed a great deal of importance upon the holistic development of students, this year, we stressed upon improving our internal academic processes also. The institute is exploring a number of avenues for digitally enabled learning through generation of e-content. We are confident that our endeavours through the last few years and the initiatives to come will take our Institute to staggering new heights. The idea that we strive to achieve ‘student delight’ in place of ‘student satisfaction’ in itself speaks volumes of our intention to wish the best for our students. Dr. S. A. Patekar VIT Annual Report 2018-19 4 Introduction Under the dynamic leadership of Shri Chandrashekar Deshpande, VIT was established in 1999 for imparting well co-ordinated, multi-disciplinary, quality technical education. Today, it aims in raising Technocrats and Managers of high academic standards and good character to serve mankind. Now, in its 18th year, VIT has continued its growth in various aspects, which include: infrastructural expansion and functioning, faculty qualifications, students’ holistic development, placements, institute – industry interactions, internships, industrial visits and talks by eminent personalities, to name a few. Vision To be a globally recognized institute where learners are nurtured in a scholarly environment to evolve into competent professionals and researchers to benefit society. Mission Evolve a curriculum which emphasizes on strong fundamentals with the flexibility to choose advanced courses of interest and gain exposure to tools and techniques in contemporary subjects. Encourage a teaching-learning process in which highly competent faculty share a symbiotic association with institutes of repute. Facilitate creation and dissemination of knowledge through a digitally-enabled learning environment. Develop academic and infrastructural facilities with modern equipment and other learning resources and encourage reciprocal sharing with other institutes through networking. Establish a Center of Excellence to enhance academia-industry partnership and work on collaborative projects. VIT Annual Report 2018-19 5 Values “Work is Worship” is a guiding principle for all at Vidyalankar. Vidyalankar believes that character- building is an important step towards nation-building. Nurturing young minds is a vital responsibility. Vidyalankar Values are the set of ideals which guide the attitudes and behaviour of the members of the Vidyalankar family. It is said that there are no short-cuts on the road to success. Educating students to differentiate between right and wrong and motivating them to choose the right path is imperative. The following values are interspersed in all aspects of the teaching-learning process: Honesty Integrity Excellence Salubrious Responsibility Commitment Attitude VIT Annual Report 2018-19 6 Organisational Structure: Organogram: Level 1: Strategy and Resource Planning VIT Annual Report 2018-19 7 Organogram: Level 2: Administrative Deployment and Execution Organogram: Level 2: Academic Deployment and Execution VIT Annual Report 2018-19 8 College Development Committee Members Sr. No. Name Constitution 1. • Mindscapes of Space, Power and Value in Mumbai
Island Studies Journal, Vol. 9, No. 2, 2014, pp. 277-292 The epistemology of a sea view: mindscapes of space, power and value in Mumbai Ramanathan Swaminathan Senior Fellow, Observer Research Foundation (ORF) Fellow, National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) Contributing Editor, Governance Now [email protected] ABSTRACT: Mumbai is a collection of seven islands strung together by a historically layered process of reclamation, migration and resettlement. The built landscape reflects the unique geographical characteristics of Mumbai’s archipelagic nature. This paper first explores the material, non-material and epistemological contours of space in Mumbai. It establishes that the physical contouring of space through institutional, administrative and non-institutional mechanisms are architected by complex notions of distance from the city’s coasts. Second, the paper unravels the unique discursive strands of space, spatiality and territoriality of Mumbai. It builds the case that the city’s collective imaginary of value is foundationally linked to the archipelagic nature of the city. Third, the paper deconstructs the complex power dynamics how a sea view turns into a gaze: one that is at once a point of view as it is a factor that provides physical and mental form to space. In conclusion, the paper makes the case that the mindscapes of space, value and power in Mumbai have archipelagic material foundations. Keywords : archipelago, form, island, mindscape, Mumbai, power, space, value © 2014 – Institute of Island Studies, University of Prince Edward Island, Canada. Introduction: unearthing the archipelagic historiography of Mumbai A city can best be described as a collection of spaces. Not in any ontological sense or in a physically linear form, but in an ever-changing, ever-interacting mesh of spatialities and territorialities that display the relative social relations of power existing at that particular point in time (Holstein & Appadurai, 1989).
