GLHA Summer Afternoon at Tidenham On a beautiful, sunny Saturday in June, members of local history groups across the County enjoyed a Summer Afternoon visit to Tidenham, Sedbury and Beachley, an event organised by Tidenham Historical Group on behalf of Gloucestershire Local History Association. Visitors were interested to learn about the history of the area and to take part in one of four history walks. Tidenham guide, Richard Clammer, took visitors around the village of Sedbury. These included exploring Sedbury, a settlement which was largely created in 1917 as part of a National Shipyard development. A local guide took walkers along the old footpaths to see the ship workers’ housing built in Arts and Crafts style, the route of a forgotten railway and the remains of a WW2 POW camp, with views of Sedbury Park and “old Sedbury”. Alternatively, groups could walk around Beachley, with its ancient ferry crossing, or follow the route of Offa’s Dyke, with spectacular views of the Wye Valley and Chepstow castle. Another option was to visit the medieval church of St Mary & St Peter at Tidenham, overlooking the River Severn. On returning from their walks, guests were treated to a super tea with scones, jam and cream, sandwiches and cakes. There was time to catch up with old friends and to view the display created by Tidenham Historical Group about the history of their town. Volunteers from Tidenham organised the event. These summer visits give members the chance to learn about special places with the benefit of knowledgeable guides to explain the history behind them. They are also a good opportunity to meet other local history enthusiasts. Next year’s GLHA Summer Afternoon will be held on Sunday 28th June at Nailsworth. .

NEW HOARDS FROM SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY ENGLAND II B.J. COOK 1. Davenham, Cheshire THIS group of thirty-two silver coins of Mary I and Elizabeth I was reported found on farmland near Davenham, Cheshire, by Mr C. Bailey in August 2000.1 Mr Bailey was metal-detecting on ploughland with the permission of the landowner. The coins were found in the sub-soil at a depth of about eighteen inches. Three of the coins were found stuck together, but the rest were scattered over approximately twenty square feet. The find was reported to the Cheshire coroner via Stephen Penny, curator of Salt Museum, of Cheshire Museums Service. A report on the coins was submitted to the coroner by the British Museum, on the basis of which the coins were declared to be Treasure at an inquest on 15 December 2000. The hoard was then acquired by Cheshire Museums Service. Davenham is a small village in the Hundred of Northwich. The coins consisted of just two denominations, twenty-nine shillings (one of Philip and Mary, and the rest of Elizabeth), and three groats (one of Mary and two of Elizabeth).2 The absence of any coins datable to the period 1561—82 is the result of this denomination selection, since no shillings or groats were produced in these years. If the find is categorised as essentially a group of shillings, the coins present fairly reflect the relative outputs of this denomination throughout Elizabeth's reign. The face value of the group was the round figure of thirty shillings. The latest coin present dates to 1601-2.

The first three volume indexes were produced on typewriters, though subsequent issues were produced by computers, and happily digital files had been preserved for these apart from one section of one index. It has therefore been necessary to create digital versions of 3 original indexes using “Optical Character Recognition” (OCR), which has not proved easy due to the relatively poor print, and extremely small text (font) size, of some of the indexes in particular. Thus the OCR results have required extensive proof-reading. Very fortunately, a team of volunteers to assist in the project was recruited from the membership of the Society, and grateful thanks are undoubtedly due to the major players in this exercise – Paul Burkhalter, John Hill, John Hutchings, Frank Jux, John Maddox and Robin Simmonds – with a special thankyou to Russell Wear, current Editor of "IL" and Chairman of the Society, who has both helped and given encouragement to the project in a myraid of different ways. None of this would have been possible but for the efforts of those who compiled the original individual indexes – Frank Jux, Ian Lloyd, (the late) James Lowe, John Scotford, and John Wood – and to the volume index print preparers such as Roger Hateley, who set a new level of presentation which is standing the test of time.
