REYES The Komiks and Retelling the Lore of the Folk Komiks (comics), which emerged in the 1920s, have captured the Filipinos’ imagination, subsequently becoming materials for major motion pictures, yet marginalized in cultural studies. This article offers a diachronic analysis of the komiks between the 1930s and the 1970s to reveal the relationship between selected komiks characters and the folk tradition embodied in epics and legends. It also explains the komiks writers’ fascination with the remote past and their construction of heroes and heroines. In illuminating the worldview of writers and readers and the meanings generated when texts and readers interact, this article problematizes the supposition that popular culture is unalloyed escapism. Kaloka, Keri, Bongga: Pakahulugan at Pahiwatig ng Gay Language sa mga Piling Pelikula ni Vice Ganda Generoso Pamittan, Jr., Chari Amado, Victoria Amante, and Feorillo P.A. Demeterio III Using the framework of Pragmatics and Grice’s (2012) cooperative principle and conversational maxims, this paper dissects the gay language’s contextual meanings, and effects on narrative and characterization as used in Vice Ganda’s selected hit films. This paper also scrutinizes the socio-cultural-political implications of the use of gay language as manifested in the role and image of the gay-language-speaking characters and how these might actually reflect empowerment and/or oppression of gays in a heteronormative society. Analyses indicate that while the use of gay language may not be indicative of gays’ social class or status, it reflects the experience, culture and discipline in which the gay takes part. Further, while Vice Ganda’s brand of humor and personality are still apparent and that gay language was used to induce laughter, it cannot be denied that, amidst society’s minoritization of gays, there are deeper underlying meanings and significance for such use of gay language. About the playwright Jimmy Flores is a freelance graphic designer who dabbles in filmmaking. He has written scripts for indie productions such as Auraeus Solito’s Tuli and Boy, Lawrence Fajardo’s Raket ni Nanay and X-Deal, and just recently, Supremo and Mariposa Sa Hawla ng Gabi for Richard Somes. Kudeta! Kudeta! is his first foray into stage plays. About the director Ariel’s (ARIEL S.R. YONZON) love for the theatre grew through a chiaroscuro of different arts in the palette of his life – good literature, appreciation of fine music of the masters, excellent grasp of language, among others, that all blended beautifully together in his journey, first at the MET (Manila Metropolitan Theater) in the early 80’s and, later, on to campus theatre at the University of the Philippines, through the U.P. Anak-Tibawan, as actor and stage manager. But, his reverence for the arts was bound to bring him to the country’s Cultural Center of the Philippines, where some of the world’s best artists perform. As one who has had the privilege of climbing up the ranks, first as Theatre Usher (as he was then a working student), then, as Project Coordinator (for the CCP Musical and Dramatic Arts Divisions), and, finally, as Head of the CCP Theatre Operations Department, he brings a unique understanding of theatre production work, grasping fully what every facet of theatre entails and giving both artists and stage personnel all that is necessary to give the audiences stellar productions. -

Personally Yours: The Impact of... 35 PERSONALLY YOURS: THE IMPACT OF CELEBRITY ENDORSEMENTS IN NATIVE ADVERTISING Cyrus Ivan Blanco, Silvestre Frando, Jr. and Eleanor Agulto, MA Institute of Communication, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences ABSTRACT Native advertising is paid content that matches the look and feel of the digital site where it is placed. This paper sought to determine the influence of celebrity endorsements in native advertising. To attain this objective, qualitative research was employed where selected Twitter followers of Anne Curtis and other celebrity endorsers were interviewed. The opinions, experiences and motivations of individual participants on native advertising in general, and Twitter celebrity endorsements in particular, were probed. The findings revealed that the informants were not receptive to Twitter posts that seemed like obvious advertisements but preferred tweets that sounded natural and personal. They also showed a more positive attitude towards the endorsed brands when the characteristics of the celebrities were in congruence with the products they promoted. They likewise said that the gratifying personal experience of the celebrity endorser with the product imbued the Twitter message with credibility and trustworthiness, and was therefore persuasive. Diaspora as Historical/Political Trope in Philippine Literature by Rolando B. Tolentino University of the Philippines Film Institute Roland B. Tolentino is Associate Professor at the University of the Philippines Film Institute and currently a Visiting Professor at the National University of Singapore. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. He is co-editor of Transglobal Economies and Cultures: Contemporary Japan and Southeast Asia (2004). Other publications include National/Transnational: Subject Formation and Media in and on the Philippines (2001) and Sa loob at labas ng mall kong sawi/kaliluha'y siyang nangyayaring hari: Ang Pagkatuto at Pagtatanghal ng Kulturang Popular [Inside and outside my shattered mall/confusion reigns supreme: Pedagogy and Performance of Popular Culture] (2001). In the last forty years, the Philippine national economy has been increasingly fueled by remittances of OCWs (overseas contract workers). I prefer the term OCW to OFW (overseas Filipino worker) as the former highlights the nature of overseas work— contractual or forming the core of the latest labor imperative in postindustrial capitalism, flexible labor. OFW, on the other hand, represents the rhetoric of the Philippine state— “bagong bayani” or “new heroes” as signified by the growing abundance of its national labor abroad. So massive is the export of subcontractual human or Filipino/a labor that eight million OCWs accounted for some US$9 billion remittances in 2005. The amount is roughly 52 percent of the 2005 Philippine national budget of P957.56 billion, and could have covered three-fold the Philippine government’s national deficit of US$3.2 billion for the same year. -

MAY 2002 INSIDE Lasallian Partners A Meeting Follow the LIDER 2 Council 4 5of Minds Operation Big Brother adopts 3 public schools As part of the La Salle mission to provide quality education to the less privileged, the Lasallian Institute for Development and Educational Research (LIDER) under the College of Education teamed up with three Manila public schools for Operation Big Brother (OBB). Started in 2001, the seven-year pilot project is undertaken with V. Mapa High School, Arellano High School, and G. Perfecto High School. The program has three beneficiaries: the students, the teachers, and the school. A total of 480 students received a complete set of textbooks and school supplies at the start of the school year. Using curriculum, materials, and learning activities similar to those used in Lasallian high schools, the students are also trained in the following subject areas: Science, Mathematics, English, Filipino, and Social Studies. Aside from getting an enriched curriculum derived from Lasallian high schools, the public schools have also benefited from improved facilities. This school year, each of the three schools received a science lab and multimedia learning resources. At the same time, 60 teachers, or 20 from each school, have been given the opportunity to apply for scholarship for a Master’s degree at DLSU-M. They also receive regular in-service teacher training programs to improve their teaching competencies. Furthermore, they receive peer coaching and peer tutoring training to enable them to become effective trainers of their co-teachers.
