Monthly Newsletter of the St Louis Chapter Club of America Volume XXXVIII No. 9 September 2019 Director’s Letter September, 2019

Greetings,

Well this month’s big adventure was attending the 2019 Heartland Regional in Stillwater, MN, hosted by the Fireball Chapter. Stillwater is really a neat little river town located on the Saint Croix River. The historic down town area next to the river makes this area an excellent destination for tourist and travelers. We enjoyed dining along the river front and a cruise on a river boat for the awards banquet. Thanks to numerous, last minute entries, we ended up with close to 100 entries, with 90 cars on the show field. The show featured peer judging and trophies were awarded to the 10 most popular cars, along with a “Best of Show” 1957 Roadmaster and a “Long Distance” award going to a 1941 Buick Woodie, from New York. This year’s event featured tours to a cheese factory, a distillery, a restoration shop, and a historic trolley tour through Stillwater, all which are featured later in the Gazette. Bill and Ginny Landers, Mark and Sheree Kistner, Richard and Vera Self, Jeanne and I manned the canopy tent, set- up on the show field to promote our 2020 Heartland Regional / $20.00 Heartland Special. Based on the traffic, comments and shirt sales, I feel we received a very positive response for our event. And yes, we are now the proud caretakers of the Heartland Regional Trailer. 2019 Heartland Regional Meeting, held by John McCarthy, Director. John thanked the Fireball Chapter for hosting the event, and noted that the Rock Valley chapter had with- drawn from hosting the 2021 Heartland Regional. After the 2020 Heartland Regional host- ed by the Gateway Chapter there are no scheduled Heartland regional meetings. During the meeting, John took a wellness check of all chapters present and the overall theme seemed to be an ageing and declining membership. It appears that the Chicagoland, Gateway and maybe the Hawkeye Chapters are the healthiest chapters in the Heartland Region.

7 2019 Heartland Regional – Stillwater, MN By Chet Palumbo The L’Cars Automotive Specialist Tour led us to their shops located in Cameron and Bruce, WI. Wow…!!! L’Cars does it all; everything from general maintenance to full restorations, in- cluding metal fabrication, paint and upholstery. While we were there, they were building/ restoring just about everything you can imagine; hot rods, street rods, muscle cars, classic cars and a couple of cars I’ve never even heard of before. They had a couple of Duesen- burgs, several Rolls-Royces, Camaros, 1934 and 1939 Ford Street Rods, and an old Willy’s Drag Car. Some of the cars were being built for the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and one secret project was being built for The Detroit Autorama’s Ridler competition.

8 2019 Heartland Regional – Stillwater, MN

On Friday we toured a cheese factory and the 45th Parallel Distillery. Now for the cheese factory, what can I say…??? Yep, we were there, they had samples, and no they were not making cheese that day, so big whoop, lets move on to the distillery. The 45th Parallel Dis- tillery tour was excellent, not the largest distillery I’ve been to by any means, but clearly the best and most entertaining tour guide we have ever had. Not so sure it was because of his extensive knowledge of the product or the fact that he had been sampling it all morn- ing…???

This month’s Gazette features Denny Labantschnig, a new member who is such a true blue car nut his email address is “dennythecarguy”. He has been around cars in both profession- al paths as well as pastime hobbies his entire life.

Born and raised in the city of St. Louis, Denny’s first recollection of the beauty of the automobile came from his family’s ’51 Buick Special. His father was a gearhead and Denny grew up by his side buying project cars, working mechanical wonders to get them on the road again and then flipping the vehicles for a profit. As an eight-year- old, Denny was his fa- ther’s assistant in toting parts and tools and learn- ing the basics. He has fond memories in their tiny garage and had no Denny and Susan LaBantschnig holding the Buick sign that he knowledge that his fami- has had since his younger days and standing in front to their ly was really poor and prestigious “Dearborn Award” 1940 Ford Panel truck and a needed the extra money 1939 Packard. these cars generat- ed. Usually, they flipped five cars a year renting neighbors’ garages for short times for stor- age. This part time family gig included an array of fine cars that caught Denny’s eye such as Lincoln Zephyrs, Ford Sun Liners and Buick Skylarks. Denny’s interest in cars was sharpened as he peddled his bike down Kingshighway study- ing styles and designs. He would often pull over into the various dealerships along the road and check out the new models. The salesmen, of course, were quite welcoming and gave him a yearly promo car model. Being a saver, Denny still has his collection of 50 company brand models today.

11 When turning 16, his family moved into St. Louis County and Denny graduated from Lind- berg High School. His dad was doing well in a paper plant job moving up to a manager po- sition. So, he bought Denny a timeless classic, the 1955 Corvette convertible for his high school graduation, but didn’t quite turn it over to him. Denny still owns it today and remem- bers competing with his dad over who gets to drive it and when. His dad added a 1965 Buick Riviera to their motor pool. When shopping for this car at Burns Buick, Denny spied on the showroom floor, a GS 4 speed stick convertible and was smitten. After several months, of return trips to the dealership and seeing this car not move, a salesman approached Denny and worked out a deal that he could afford a nominal car pay- ment with his afterschool grocery store job. This was his first new car and it was a Buick.

Denny went on to Washington University earning a business degree and then later, an engi- neering degree from the GM Institute, a consortium of Michigan State University. Using these degrees, he worked in various career fields in various places in the states spending many years at Bell Telephone.

Around 1989, though, Denny wanted to change course. He began buying gas station/ convenience store properties, building them up and then selling for a profit. To him, this was challenging fun. Ever the entrepreneur, Denny next bought a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealer- ship in Rolla, Missouri. And he enjoyed running it for 25 years. In 2009, he won Ford’s na- tional Dealer Salute Award for his outstanding business and charitable endeavors.

But in 2014, selling the dealership and striking out on his own beckoned his attention. Den- ny started his own automotive consulting business, traveling far and wide nationally to assist other dealerships in improving their businesses. He set up a home in South county and con- structed an 8300 sq.ft. garage adjacent to the house to store his current collectibles, mostly unique Ford and GM models numbering up to 12. Some are his father’s long cherished cars that he has kept in his fold. Denny even owns a 2005 Ford GT 40 to hot rod around in. And he and his wife, Susan, drive twin retro Ford Thunderbird ragtops. But no Buick lives there.

As time permitted, he admired cars at various shows here in St. Louis. He dreamed of the ‘65 GS he once had owned as a young man and regretted parting with it. Denny decided to set a goal to find a ’65 Riviera model again.

In 2017 at a very chilly HCCA Easter Show, he met Kristina Richards and she signed him up into the Gateway Buick Chapter. Denny looked forward to the help and advice on his hunt for the sought after ’65 Buick from our club. He also joined the Riviera Club, and the BCA. Once, for an adventure, Denny applied to the Ford Motor Company to be accepted to make an application to purchase a 2016 halo vehicle, the new Ford GT. Though he complied with intense paperwork and a professional video of his deluxe garage and his cars’ comfort factor within, he was turned down by Ford. Denny speculates that “I guess I can’t compete with the like of Jay Leno and Bill Gates”!

12 Denny’s final note to himself is that he wants to slow down his pace and do some fun stuff with the Gateway Chapter, attend local events and meetings. He is still on the hunt for that elusive ’65 Riv.

Back to the Bricks is an annual car cruise in Flint, Michigan on the original site of the old Buick factory. Held on the same weekend and similar in format as the more fa- mous “Woodward Dream Cruise”, it is an annual event sponsored by , but is open to all makes of cars. The following history of the event was taken from their website: www.backtothebricks.org.

In the fall of 2004, Al Hatch and other car enthusiasts began to discuss the possibility of a car show in downtown Flint that would complement and coincide with the 'Woodward Dream Cruise' in Detroit. Together, they began to take steps that would make Back to the Bricks a reality. When the committee approached Jerry Preston of the Flint Convention and Visitors Bureau about sponsoring the event, he arranged a meeting with the Small Business Owners of Downtown to support for a bold new venture that promised to revitalize the and attract thousands to the area to celebrate the automotive industry and its role in the of Flint.

With the backing of these two entities, the committee convinced city leaders to grant the necessary to close approximately three blocks the historic bricks" under the arches of Saginaw Street for the first Back to the Bricks, scheduled for August 2005. Still with no operating budget, and no major sponsors, the fledging organization faced a daunting task. Committee member, John Chapin, volunteered the artistic talents of son Jason, to design the first giveaway, a t-shirt that would market the event to potential participants, and promotional flyers to advertise the "Bricks." Doc Watson of the Hurst Shifter Corpora the hirts, and Economy Downtown Flint, volunteered his services to produce the flyers. Stories in The Flint Journal and on ABC 12 News brought additional attention and generated en- thusiasm for the project.

Few believed or could have envisioned the success of the new venture. Thanks to corporate spon- sors like General Motors, Buick, ELGA Credit Union, and many others, Back to the Bricks has grown from a one-day event with only a few hundred cars and spectators to a multi-day extrava- ganza. fun begins with Promo Tours each June to various locales around the Great Lakes, Dur- ing the week prior to the Bricks, Tune-Up Parties across Genesee County set the stage for the Main Event. Combined, these festive celebrations today attract half a million car enthusiasts and specta- tors from around the nation and the world,

14 In 2012, Back to the unveiled the first of several commemorative statues of important automotive pio- neers. Life-size bronze replicas of David Buick, William C. (Billy) Durant, Louis Chevrolet, and Albert Champion stand proudly in GM Automotive Pioneer Plaza in downtown Flint. Statues of Walter P. Chrysler and Charles W, Nash welcome visitors in the baggage claim area at Bishop Airport, A statue of Otto P. Graff stands at the corner of Court and Saginaw Street near the site of his early dealership. A bronze replica of Charles Stewart Mott, local philanthropist, will soon grace the campus of the college that bears his name. The Statue Project plans to honor other historic figures from the automotive industry in the future. For the first time, Hack to the Bricks and Buick will sponsor an indoor winter car show, "Chrome and Ice." The in- augural event, scheduled February 12-13, 2016 at the Dort Federal Credit Union Event Center in Flint, Michigan, will feature a "summertime" theme, complete with sand, palm trees, and entertainment a Cali- fornia-based "beach boy" band.

Gateway Buick Club member, Gary Heim, has long wished to attend the event. Finally, the urge got more than he could resist. He loaded up his gorgeous 36 Buick 4 door and headed up the road to Flint. A brick area up front and center is reserved for , of which Gary’s car was displayed prominently. Thanks to Gary for representing all of Buickland in this, the heritage of Buick and providing these interesting pictures.
