Muito obrigada, de coração! RESUMO Merosargus é um gênero da família Stratiomyidae conhecida como mosca-soldado. Essas moscas pertencem estritamente ao Novo Mundo, ocorrendo amplamente na região Neotropical. As larvas desenvolvem-se em matéria orgânica vegetal, contribuindo para a ciclagem de nutrientes. Várias espécies de Merosargus ocorrem no Parque Estadual do Rio Doce (PERD) – local em que este trabalho foi desenvolvido. O objetivo deste estudo foi testar se ocorre preferência por substratos para visitas e ovipostura de Merosargus e a influência destes no tamanho e no tempo de desenvolvimento das moscas. Foram usados pseudocaules de duas espécies de Heliconia (H. episcopalis e H. spathocircinata) e de um híbrido natural (H. x mantenensis) em três tamanhos (5, 10 e 20 cm) como sítios de ovipostura de Merosargus. Os substratos foram deixados em campo e as visitas e posturas foram observadas ao longo do dia. Após o término do experimento, os pseudocaules foram mantidos em estufa (25±1ºC) até a emergência dos adultos. Para testar a preferência de Merosargus por espécie e tamanho de psedocaules, usou-se uma Anova (two-way) e para avaliar a influência dos substratos no tamanho e no tempo de desenvolvimento das moscas, usou-se uma Anova (three-way). As análises foram feitas em nível de gênero, visto que algumas espécies apresentaram amostras inviáveis para tal. Nas observações de campo, M. gracilis foi a espécie dominante, mas, também apareceram M. cingulatus, M. azureus e M. gowdeyi e pseudocaules de H. x mnantenensis e de 20 cm receberam maior número de visitas e posturas. Em laboratório, houve maior emergência de M. gracilis e números bem inferiores das demais espécies que ocorreram em campo. Os pseudocaules maiores e de H. spathocircinata mostraram-se melhores para o desenvolvimento de Merosargus, originando insetos de maior tamanho corpóreo e com menor tempo de desenvolvimento. O tempo de desenvolvimento teve relação inversa com o tamanho dos insetos: moscas que emergiram em menor tempo tiveram maior tamanho médio do tórax. Os resultados demonstram que Merosargus consideram a quantidade e a qualidade dos substratos para ovipostura, mas, nem sempre os substratos preferidos são os melhores para o desenvolvimento larval. Este trabalho elucidou um pouco sobre a preferência e o desenvolvimento de algumas espécies de Merosargus. Mas, seriam interessantes a realização de outros estudos e análises para melhor justificar os resultados encontrados. ABSTRACT Merosargus is a genus in the family Stratiomyidae (soldier flies). These flies are exclusive to the New World and are widely distributed in the Neotropical region. The larvae develop on rotting plant material contributing to nutrient cycling. Several Merosargus species have been recorded in the study area – Parque Estadual do Rio Doce (PERD). This study aimed to test the preference by Merosargus females for visitation and oviposition substrates and their influence on larval development time and adult size. We used pseudostems of two Heliconia species (H. episcopalis and H. spathocircinata) and one natural hybrid (H. x mantenensis) in three different sizes (5, 10, and 20 cm) as oviposition sites for Merosargus females. The substrates were left in the field, and visits and oviposition attempts were observed throughout the day. After the end of the experiment, pseudostems were kept in an incubator (25±1ºC) until adult emergence. We used two-way Anova to test the preference of Merosargus females for pseudostem species and size, and three-way Anova to evaluate the influence of substrates on development time and adult size. The analyses were performed at the genus level, as the samples of some species could not be used. Merosargus gracilis was the dominant species in field observations, but M. cingulatus, M. azureus, and M. gowdeyi were also sampled. Heliconia x mantenensis and 20 cm pseudostems had the higher number of visits and oviposition attempts. In the laboratory, there was greater emergence of M. gracilis individuals and lower numbers of the other species found in the field. Larger pseudostems and those of H. spathocircinata were more suitable for Merosargus development, resulting in adults with larger body size and lower development time. Development time negatively correlated with adult size: soldier flies that emerged earlier had larger thorax size. The results show that Merosargus females evaluate substrate quantity and quality for oviposition, but preferred substrates are not always the most suitable for larval development. This study elucidated a few aspects about the preference and development of some Merosargus species, but it would be interesting to carry out further studies and analyzes to better justify the results. This study identified substrate types used as a resource by Merosargus larvae and investigated the degree of specialization and overlap in resource use by different species at an Atlantic forest remnant in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

    ETHNOBOTANICAL KNOWEDGE ACQUISITION AMONG TSIMANE’ CHILDREN IN THE BOLIVIAN AMAZON by MARIA-RUTH MARTINEZ-RODRIGUEZ (Under the direction of Brent Berlin) ABSTRACT This dissertation is concerned with the acquisition of ethnobotanical knowledge, defined here as local knowledge about plants accumulated across generations. Ethnobotanical knowledge is highly valued for the role it plays in facilitating human survival over generations, its contribution to material culture, its role in conservation of biological diversity, nutrition, health, and agriculture. The process of ethnobotanical knowledge survival depends upon its transmission from one generation to another. To explore the issue of ethnobotanical knowledge acquisition, this dissertation focuses in the relationship of Tsimane’ children with their socio-environmental conditions. The Tsimane’ are an indigenous group traditionally of horticulturalists and hunter-gatherers located in the Department of Beni, Bolivia. The Tsimane’ are going through continual environmental and socio-cultural changes providing a rich case for this examination; they have historically had low contact with western society, are highly autarkic, and still depend highly in forest resources for their livelihood. This work explores through history, ethnography, and quantitative ethnobotany how Tsimane’ children acquire ethnobotanical knowledge. In order to explore how ethnobotanical knowledge is acquired, this work tested parent- children relationship and children’s individual characteristics with their children’s ethnobotanical knowledge. Initial hypothesis of this dissertation stated that ethnobotanical knowledge held by Tsimane’ children is positively associated to the same sex parent, this due to traditional gender division in work. I also hypothesized that children’s demographic characteristics, namely gender, age, and household, influence ethnobotanical knowledge acquisition. These hypotheses were tested with ethnobotanical knowledge tests carried out with 59 children and 39 adults, who were these children parents’.

In tropical rural communities, there is a gender bias hypothesis that makes women potential reservoirs of traditional chacras plant knowledge. We present an experimental study in order to demonstrate if this knowledge difference really exists and to plan accordingly. We performed workshops in an isolated Kichwa community from Amazonian Ecuador. We calculated the cultural signififcance index (CSI) for 97 local flora plants. Our results revealed statistically significant differences. They were coherent with the Kichwa worldview and the structure of their society. We concluded that gender perspective must be taken into account in biodiversity conservation programs, such as, for example, those to implement the resilient agricultural practices of tropical contexts promoted by The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SGD2).

Pollen from 149 taxa was examined qualitatively for starch as the primary storage product. Starchy pollen was found in 134 taxa (90 % of the sample) of Commelinoid monocots. Starchy pollen thus appears be a characteristic feature of the Commelinoid monocots. Starchy pollen can be easily observed with minimal preparation, making it a demonstrable character useful in the classroom or teaching laboratory. Para cada espécie, foi definida a sinonímia, elaborada uma breve caracterização botânica e indicadas as regiões e ambiente de ocorrência natural. Também foram evidenciadas algumas características que as diferenciam de outras espécies do gênero e comentado seu uso como planta ornamental. São relatadas 34 espécies como de ocorrência natural do Brasil, incluindo a H. schumanniana Loes. e excluindo a H. latispatha Benth, constante em outros artigos, uma vez que no aprofundamento da revisão e consultas efetuadas em trabalhos científicos, descrição de espécies, relatos de expedições de coleta e informações pessoais de especialistas no gênero, não foi encontrado o necessário suporte para mantê-la como espécie de ocorrência natural do Brasil. The genus Merosargus (Loew) has 142 described species. This great diversity in the genus could be explained by larvae resource-use specialization. However, information on larval habitats is still very scarce. In Merosargus species, adult males defend oviposition sites, and this territorial behavior may lead to interspecific competition and make even more important the specialization and niche partitioning to prevent competitive exclusion. This study identified substrate types used as a resource by Merosargus larvae and investigated the degree of specialization and overlap in resource use by different species at an Atlantic forest remnant in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Every potential resource, especially those with adults in the vicinity, was collected opportunistically from October 2001 to October 2004.

If there are differ- ences, what does this mean for representing our environment in Geographic Information Systems (GIS)? This thesis explores these questions through ethnographic work in the Bolivian Amazon rainforest. The first part of this thesis explores folk landscape categori- sations, focusing on uses and cultural importance of landscape features. Such folk categorisations have hitherto not been rep- resented on maps or in GIS used by local authorities. The second part investigates how such local understandings can be better represented on maps and in a GIS. Space to Place in the Bolivian Amazon From The findings of this thesis highlight that differences in landscape categorisation can have important practical implications. How an area is categorised and represented on maps and in GIS influ- ences decisions regarding natural resource management, often with tangible consequences for indigenous peoples.
