  • 2011 Annual Report
2011 Annual Report Inspired Innovation To our shareholders In many ways, 2011 was an amazing year. At times, the year felt like a story from the book of Genesis, with the Japanese earthquake, tsunami and subsequent nuclear issues, the fl ooding in Thailand late in the year, tornadoes in the southern United States, and revolution in North Africa. Matters were further complicated in 2011 by the sovereign debt issue in Greece, worries about Italy’s solvency and the economic downturn in Europe. We must offer special recognition here to our Japanese colleagues for their wonderful efforts in 2011 and to their entire nation for the dignifi ed and orderly way in which they dealt with the tsunami and related challenges. They have my profound personal admiration. Through all of this, while dealing in many cases with enormous personal challenges presented by these disasters, 3M’s people also met the business challenges and once again delivered strong results. George W. Buckley Despite all this turbulence, full-year sales increased 11 percent to Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Offi cer $29.6 billion, with double-digit growth in Industrial and Transportation; Safety, Security and Protection Services; and Health Care. Operating margins were 20.9 percent for the company, and all businesses delivered margins of 20 percent or higher, which is an amazing feat of consistency. Inge G. Thulin named President and Chief Executive Offi cer, 3M Company, Feb. 24, 2012 Inge G. Thulin, 58, was named president and chief executive offi cer of 3M Company effective Feb. 24, 2012.

  • PFAS and Alternatives Environment and Health Issues
TURI Workshop, Boston, 9 November 2011 PFAS and alternatives Environment and Health Issues Allan Astrup Jensen Research Director Nordic Institute of Product Sustainability, Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology [email protected] Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) • This are synthetic chemicals used in many industrial processes and in consumer products exposing the public. • Among the most well‐known uses are for production of “Teflon” pans, impregnation of microwave popcorn bags and children's all‐weather clothing. Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) PFAS are surface‐active compounds (surfactants) with extremely low surface tensions, and they repel water, fat and dirt. Therefore, they are very much used for impregnation of leather and textile furniture: The most important PFAS is PFOS? PFOS is: Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid and its salts C8HF17SO3 The most important PFAS is PFOS? PFOS is: Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid and its salts C8HF17SO3 PFOS is also far the most hazardous PFAS! PFOS precursors The PFOS substances mostly used in practice are functional derivatives of the basic chemical structure e.g. substituted sulfonamides: N-Ethylperfluorooctane sulfonamidoethanol; EtFOSE PFOS precursors • These PFOS derivatives are more biodegradable but only to PFOS, because the fluorinated tail will never degrade in nature; homologue compounds with shorter or longer chain behave similarly. • While PFOS and its salts with a hydrophilic functional group are non-volatile and will be spread with surface waters, the covalent amides are more volatile and may be transported over long distances to remote areas by the air. PFOS in the environment • PFOS is persistent, bioaccumulating and toxic • It is found wide spread in nature, organisms and humans • The highest levels have been found in blood and livers from polar bears.

Read This First! Thank you for using the SHRM Foundation Discussion Guide DVD, Seeing Forward: Succession Planning at 3M. This document outlines the suggested use and explanation of the supplemental materials cre- ated for use with the video. Please read it carefully before proceeding. Our goal is to provide you, the facilitator, with materials that will allow you to create a custom- ized presentation and discussion.
