USC Trojan Marching Band USC Trojan Marching Band Press Pack Fall 2012 2011 YEAR IN REVIEW Super Weekend The weekend of the NFL’s big game was also “super” high-profile for The Spirit of Troy. On Saturday the band performed at “A Concert for America” in Simi Val- ley celebrating Ronald Reagan’s 100th birthday along- side the Beach Boys and numerous dignitaries. Band members saw the helmet (right) given to the Presi- dent in 1989 that was placed on permanent display at the newly-renovated library. On Sunday the band appeared on the special post-Super Bowl episode of Glee, watched by 26.8 million viewers in the US. The TMB and zombified cast took a group shot at the filming in January (top left). Spring Spirit The spring semester saw the band following USC Athletics wherever the postseason took them. The basketball band supported the men’s team at the first First Four in Dayton and a 10-Piece played the men’s tennis team on to their third straight national championship at Stanford (above). Summer Jobs During their summer break, band members stayed active with a busy filming schedule. They shot a com- mercial at Venice Beach for the university (above), a national campaign for StubHub, a promo for the Versus network and YouTube spots for GetTrojanTix.com with Matt Barkley, Robert Woods and Coach Ed Orgeron. The drum major even starred in the ESPN College GameDay “Comin’ to Your City” music video, which was shot in Orlando (left). Earlier in the summer, the band appeared 1 on CBS’s The Talk. ONE MORE YEAR! Matt Barkley broke more than USC passing records in 2011. After victories over Colorado, Oregon, UCLA and Notre Dame (not pictured), he conducted “Conquest!” an unprecedented four times. Although pundits considered this a sign he was leaving for the NFL, he announced in December he was staying at ‘SC to seek a national championship. Speaking of championships, The Spirit of Troy also played the men’s water polo team on to a record 4th consecutive title in Berkeley and followed the Women of Troy volleyball team to the final four in San Antonio. A SEASON OF MILESTONES In Dr. Bartner’s 42nd season as director, The Spirit of Troy cele- brated many anniversaries. On Sept. 17, the band marked its 300th consecutive Trojan football game attended, home or away. Since the streak began in 1987, the TMB has logged over 280,000 miles and performed for 19.5 million fans. At the game, Athletic Direc- tor Pat Haden presented Dr. Bartner with a medal honoring his 2012 induction into the USC Hall of Fame (left). In October the band made its biennial trip to South Bend for the contest against the Irish. It was the TMB’s 20th consecutive USC-Notre Dame game on the road. The season finale win over the Bruins at the Coliseum was Dr. Bartner’s 250th home game. Hollywood’s Band ........................................ 32 About the Trojan Marching Band USC Trojan Marching Band Shortly after the University of Southern California was founded in 1880, a group of musicians first came together to form what would become the Trojan Marching Band (TMB). Now the largest spirit organization on campus, the band has developed into one of the most exciting and innovative collegiate marching bands in the country. Featuring over 300 passionate students from nearly every major at USC, the TMB is a prominent and visible representative of the university with over 350 engagements each year. It has truly earned its nickname “The Spirit of Troy” for its commitment to ‘SC and its tireless support of Trojan athletics. Over the course of a single football season, The Spirit of Troy entertains hundreds of thousands of fans in stadiums across the country and millions more on national television. In fact, the band has not missed a Trojan football game, at home or on the road, since 1987. A portion of the TMB follows the Trojans to every game with the entire band traveling north each year to play one of the Bay Area schools and biennially to the Midwest for the Notre Dame contest. At home in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the band entertains the Trojan faithful with perfor- mances before, during and after the game. The traditional pregame features the Trojan fight songs and the band’s distinctive rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner.” Each halftime, the TMB presents a new and exciting field show that is a powerful blend of popular music, precision drills and crowd-pleasing dance routines. Then, after the game, the band performs its customary set of “rock charts” for the lucky fans who stay past the final whistle. USC TROJAN MARCHING BAND PRESS PACK • 4 About the Trojan Marching Band Come New Year’s Day, the Trojan Marching Band can often be found at its second home in Pasadena. The Rose Bowl Game has hosted The Spirit of Troy 33 times, by far the most of any collegiate band. Other bowl games the band has attended include the Emerald, Orange, Las Vegas, Sun, Cotton and Fiesta Bowls. The Spirit of Troy’s commitment to USC Athletics is not limited to football, though. From volleyball to soccer, baseball to crew, the band is there to root the Trojans on to victory at over 85 sports events each year. During the spring, The Spirit of Troy becomes the USC Basketball Band and attends all of the men’s and women’s home games. When the Trojans or Women of Troy advance to the postseason, the band travels to the “Big Dance” as well, including an appearance at the 2007 East Regional in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Trojan Marching Band has tripled in size since Dr. Arthur C. Bartner became its director in 1970. With the assistance of long-time arranger Tony Fox, Dr. Bartner has built the band into a world-renowned performing group with frequent appearances at special events throughout the globe. In 2003 the Trojan Marching Band appeared at the Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Parade in Hong Kong. This was the first time an American marching band was invited to perform at the event. The TMB has also received worldwide exposure with appearances at ma- jor sports events, including three Super Bowls, three World Series games, the 1994 World Cup and the 2004 NHL All-Star Weekend. When traveling internationally, the band has performed at local sports events. The TMB appeared at rugby and Australian Rules Football matches in Sydney, a professional baseball game in Japan and – in 2008 – a Brazilian club soccer match. Because of its frequent exposure on the small and silver screens, the TMB has become known as “Hollywood’s Band.” The Spirit of Troy can be seen in such films asThe Naked Gun and the Academy Award-winning Forrest Gump. Indeed, the Academy Awards telecast itself has fea- tured the band three times: in 1976, 2000 and 2009. At the 81st Annual Academy Awards, the drumline – in top hats and tuxes – accompanied Beyoncé and Hugh Jackman in a Baz Luhrmann-produced salute to the Hollywood musical. Earlier that year, the band appeared at the 51st Grammy Awards, collaborating with British alternative rock group Radiohead on one of the most acclaimed performances of the night.

February 26, 2021 Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama are voting to form a union with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). We are the writers of feature films and television series. All of our work is done under union contracts whether it appears on Amazon Prime, a different streaming service, or a television network. Unions protect workers with essential rights and benefits. Most importantly, a union gives employees a seat at the table to negotiate fair pay, scheduling and more workplace policies. Deadline Amazon accepts unions for entertainment workers, and we believe warehouse workers deserve the same respect in the workplace. We strongly urge all Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer to VOTE UNION YES.
