  • Econophysics Research in India in the Last Two Decades
Econophysics Research in India in the last two Decades Asim Ghosh Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics Division Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics 1/AF Bidhannagar, Kolkata 700 064, India. Abstract We discuss here researches on econophysics done from India in the last two decades. The term ‘econophysics’ was formally coined in India (Kolkata) in 1995. Since then many research papers, books, reviews, etc. have been written by scientists. Many institutions are now involved in this research field and many conferences are being organized there. In this article we give an account (of papers, books, reviews, papers in proceedings volumes etc.) of this research from India. 1 Introduction The subject econophysics is an interdisciplinary research field where the tools of physics are applied to understand the problem of economics. The term ‘econo- physics’ was coined by H. Eugene Stanley in a Kolkata conference on statistical physics in 1995. The research on economics by physicists is not new. There were many physicists who contributed significantly in the development of eco- nomics. For example Daniel Bernoulli, who developed utility-based preferences, was a physicist. Similarly Irving Fisher, who was one of the founders of neo- classical economic theory, was a student of statistical physicist Josiah Willard Gibbs. Also Jan Tinbergen, who won the first Nobel Prize in economics, did his Ph. D. in statistical physics in Leiden university under Paul Ehrenfest. However these physicists (by training) eventually left physics and migrated to economics. The new feature of the developments for the last two decades is that physicists studying the problems of economics or sociology remain in their re- arXiv:1308.2191v4 [q-fin.GN] 26 Aug 2013 spective departments and publish their econophysics research results in almost all the major physics journals.

PERSPECTIVES THE STORY OF ECONOPHYSICS *,† ‡ BIKAS K. CHAKRABARTI, AND ARNAB CHATTERJEE Introduction A Brief History of Economics: Outsiders’ Account he entry on “Econophysics” by economist J. Berkley Rosser, Jr. in the New Palgrave Dictionary When physics started to develop, during the time of Tof Economics1 begins with the statement Galileo Galelei (1564-1642), there was hardly any science “According to Bikas Chakrabarti (...), the term at a grown-up stage to get help or inspiration from. The ‘econophysics’ was neologized in 1995 at the second only science that was somewhat mature was mathematics, Statphys-Kolkata conference in Kolkata (formerly which is an analytical science (based on logic) and not Calcutta), India, by the physicist H. Eugene Stanley ...”. synthetic (based on observations/ experiments carried out in The econophysics research therefore formally completes controlled environments or laboratories). Yet, developments fifteen years of research by the end of this year! Indeed it is in mathematics, astronomical studies in particular, had a gratifying to see that the revered physics journal Reviews of deep impact in the development of physics, of which the Modern Physics has published already their first review on (classical) foundation was almost single-handedly laid econophysics, namely on Statistical mechanics of money, down by Isaac Newton (1643-1727). Mathematics wealth, and income by physicist Victor Yakovenko and remained at the core of physics since then. The rest of main economist J. Barkley Rosser, Jr.2 late last year! stream sciences, like chemistry, biology etc all tried to get inspiration from, utilize, and compare with physics since We intend to trace these developments.

After a rather detailed storytelling about our endeavors from Kolkata, we give a brief description of the main research achievements in a simple and non-technical language. We also briefly present, in technical language, a piece of our recent research result. We conclude our paper with a brief perspective. Keywords: traveling salesman problem; simulated annealing technique; kinetic exchange model; Gini index; Kolkata index; minority game; Kolkata Paise Restaurant problem 1. Introduction Countless attempts and research studies, mostly in physics, to model and comprehend the economic systems are about a century old. For the last three or four decades, major Citation: Chakrabarti, B.K.; Sinha, A. endeavor have been made and some successes have been achieved and published, notably Development of Econophysics: A under the general title ‘Econophysics’. The term was coined at a Kolkata conference held Biased Account and Perspective from in 1995 by Eugene Stanley, who later in an interview said “ ... So, he (Bikas) started to have Kolkata.
