During that period he has starred in some of the best-loved shows of modern times, including Doc Martin, William and Mary, and of course he phenomenally successful Men Behaving Badly. He was introduced to acting at a young age. His father, a successful actor and theatre manager who gave Peter Ustinov his first break, tragically died of cancer in 1970, leaving his wife Daphne, their daughter Amanda, and 8-year-old Martin. Years later, it was Daphne's cousin, Jeremy Brett - the actor famous for playing Sherlock Holmes - who encouraged Martin to take up acting professionally. Martin worked regularly through the 1980s, but when he was spotted by comedian Harry Enfield and subsequently made regular appearances in his popular sketch shows, he was catapulted into the big time. After landing the role of Gary in Men Behabving Badly, he has gone from strengh to strength.     9 Nov 2007, 1030 MARTIN CLUNES Pro-Chancellor, Martin Clunes is an actor of national renown who has played in a very wide range of film, television and stage productions, and first achieved his huge following for his role as Gary in Men Behaving Badly. His many other successes include the lead role in Doc Martin, and in feature films such as Shakespeare in Love. He is a son of the classical actor Alec Clunes and a cousin of the late Jeremy Brett, television’s Sherlock Holmes, so perhaps Martin’s school should not have been taken by surprise when he told the careers adviser that he too wanted to be an actor. The headmaster was discouraging (‘it’s not going to happen: buckle down’) but a teacher who evidently had some foresight saw his potential and put him in Love’s Labour’s Lost as Costard, the clown who is also very much at home with wit and wordplay. So his first performance was a comedy part in a classic play, and if comedy drama has been his forte ever since, he has by no means lost contact with the classics. Martin went to the Arts Educational Schools in London, on the strength of an audition, at the age of 16, and then into repertory, now more often playing Shakespeare’s courtiers than his fools. He made his name in the long-running TV situation comedy Men Behaving Badly, where he played Gary Strang, a character described (and I quote) as a ‘lager-loving loafer’. The show, its stars and and its writer have won many awards, and it was voted the best sitcom in the BBC's history at the Corporation's 60th anniversary celebrations in 1996.

    SIMON LACEY Composer A graduate of University College London and classically trained pianist, Simon Lacey started his musical career as songwriter and vocalist in the band Great Northern Electrics, subsequently playing keyboards for artists ranging from Ricky Gervais to Echobelly. His career as a television composer took off in the mid-90s when he scored numerous projects for the then fledgling RDF Television, also doing documentary work for the BBC and others. Simon's reputation as a sensitive and original composer for drama has been growing rapidly since his work on Carlton's remake of E. Nesbit's The Railway Children in 2000. For this film, starring Richard Attenborough, Gregor Fisher and Jenny Agutter as 'Mother', Simon created a beautifully lyrical chamber orchestra score evoking the idealised world of Edwardian childhood. Recent work includes the feature film Good, starring Viggo Mortensen and directed by Vicente Amorim, for which Simon composed an orchestral score as well as arranging songs by Mahler. However Simon can also write in a more contemporary mode, as in the recent ITV comedy-drama Monday Monday . Comedy drama is something of a speciality, and Simon has composed for several Simon Nye-scripted comedies for Talkback Thames including Open Wide , Tunnel of Love and Beauty , the latter starring Martin Clunes. In the documentary field, Simon composed the music for Pioneer Productions' highly acclaimed documentary film Life Before Birth (broadcast on Discovery as In the Womb ). He has also written many memorable and popular title themes, including those for the BBC’s drama series Fish and for BBC2's 7-part series British Film Forever , which led the BBC's Summer of British Film in 2007.
