Celebrating Joan Baez KQED Perks KQED Member Day at SFMOMA — Free Admission to New Museum on June 23 Member Magazine JUNE 2016 Celebrating Joan Baez KQED Perks KQED Member Day at SFMOMA — Free Admission to New Museum on June 23 After a three-year-long expansion, the new San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is a must-see San Francisco destination. The largest museum of its kind in the United States, SFMOMA now offers free public spaces, free admission for visitors 18 and under, 170,000 square feet of gallery space, and almost an entire floor devoted to photography. To celebrate the newly transformed museum, KQED is partnering with SFMOMA for KQED Member Day! On Thursday, June 23, KQED members plus one guest are admitted free to SFMOMA (current KQED MemberCard and valid ID required). These free, timed tickets must be picked up on-site, cannot be reserved in advance, and are subject to availability. For those who aren’t as familiar with what that means, cozies are a mystery subgenre. They focus more on the story, setting, and characters surrounding a whodunit than an in-depth criminal procedure or graphic depictions of violence. Think of M.C. Beaton’s “Agatha Raisin” or the TV show “Murder, She Wrote.” I’ve read the first few novels in mum’s series, which are currently on the road to publication, and they are flat-out really good. I realize that as her daughter I am partial, but I also used to be a copyeditor and have read some genuinely awful manuscripts, so I’m betting that experience balances out my bias.

    9 Nov 2007, 1030 MARTIN CLUNES Pro-Chancellor, Martin Clunes is an actor of national renown who has played in a very wide range of film, television and stage productions, and first achieved his huge following for his role as Gary in Men Behaving Badly. His many other successes include the lead role in Doc Martin, and in feature films such as Shakespeare in Love. He is a son of the classical actor Alec Clunes and a cousin of the late Jeremy Brett, television’s Sherlock Holmes, so perhaps Martin’s school should not have been taken by surprise when he told the careers adviser that he too wanted to be an actor. The headmaster was discouraging (‘it’s not going to happen: buckle down’) but a teacher who evidently had some foresight saw his potential and put him in Love’s Labour’s Lost as Costard, the clown who is also very much at home with wit and wordplay. So his first performance was a comedy part in a classic play, and if comedy drama has been his forte ever since, he has by no means lost contact with the classics. Martin went to the Arts Educational Schools in London, on the strength of an audition, at the age of 16, and then into repertory, now more often playing Shakespeare’s courtiers than his fools. He made his name in the long-running TV situation comedy Men Behaving Badly, where he played Gary Strang, a character described (and I quote) as a ‘lager-loving loafer’. The show, its stars and and its writer have won many awards, and it was voted the best sitcom in the BBC's history at the Corporation's 60th anniversary celebrations in 1996.

The media landscape has changed dramatically in recent years, with fundamental changes in the way audiences choose and view content. Today, more than one in three visitors to KCTS9.org use a tablet or mobile device to connect with us. Five years ago, that figure was less than 5 percent. With new tools and technologies, the public has become actively involved in the creation, selection and distribution of content. We live in a world where time-shifted viewing, streaming video, tablets and smartphones have profoundly changed how audiences consume and share content. How does a public media organization stand out when, with today’s technology, everyone is a media company? We met this challenge by launching an initiative to produce innovative digital offerings that broaden the content we provide and the platforms on which we provide it. Often our tickets are being marketed on secondary ticket websites before the operator of the website has even purchased tickets – and they are selling at prices far above the price you will pay through whartoncenter.com. Purchasing tickets to Wharton Center events through another source might result in paying too much for your tickets or paying for tickets that are invalid. If there is a problem with your tickets, you may not be able to receive help from Wharton Center’s Ticket Office as there will be no in-house record of your transaction. In addition, we are unable to contact you if there is a change in performance time, traffic notices, etc. To avoid being ensnared by unscrupulous ticket resellers: • Bookmark our website, whartoncenter.com for ticket and show information. • Sign up for our eClub to receive information directly from Wharton Center. We urge you to protect yourself by purchasing directly from the official source for Wharton Center tickets: at whartoncenter.com; by phone at 1-800-WHARTON (1-800-942-7866); or at the Auto-Owners Insurance Ticket Office at Wharton Center.
