Reimagining the Jesus Tradition : Orality, Memory, and Ancient ABSTRACT Reimagining the Jesus Tradition: Orality, Memory, and Ancient Biography This study attempts to provide informed answers as to why the gospels are similar yet different. By noting the inadequacy of the traditional literary paradigm—which accounts for the nature of the gospels almost exclusively by appealing to the literary activities of the evangelists at the writing stage—the dissertation argues that informed answers about the same yet different gospel accounts (SDGA) can be gained by taking into full consideration various factors at different stages of Jesus tradition. This study adopts an eclectic approach in reimagining the Jesus tradition in general and the SDGA in particular, and thus explores three areas of research in turn: orality, memory, and ancient biography. The dissertation concludes with two overarching implications for future research. First, the traditional literary paradigm cannot be the sole explanation for the SDGA and a number of possible factors that this study points out should be seriously considered in any future investigation of this topic. Second, the future study of the SDGA must show sensitivity to ancient media culture and conventions. The fact that Jesus, tradents of the Jesus tradition, and the evangelists lived in a deeply oral culture forces us to rethink the SDGA in light of the studies of orality and memory. The literary activities of the evangelists can be best understood in a specific historical context where similar activities were widely attested in ancient biographers. The Jesus of history or the Christ of faith? Is Jesus a historical person in the past who can be objectively portrayed, or a figure who can be constantly reconstructed in conformity to the different needs of the present? Are the gospels different stories of Jesus or various histories of Jesus?1 Not many scholars would respond to these questions with affirmative either/or answers; rather, they would prefer more nuanced both/and approaches, although the nature of both/and merits further clarifications. Acknowledging the significance of these questions, the present study seeks informed answers for the overarching question of how the Jesus tradition should be understood. 1.1 The Research Problem and Its Significance In general, the Jesus tradition refers to a body of traditional materials that contain Jesus’s words and deeds, whether oral or written, that may or may not be included in the canonical gospels. However, the specific aspect of the Jesus tradition on which this project concentrates is the “consistent character” of the gospel accounts—the 1 This question echoes the primary concern of Samuel Byrskog, Story as History—History as Story: The Gospel Tradition in the Context of Ancient Oral History (Boston: Brill, 2002). I will make an exception when the expression is a part of the biblical title (e.g., the Gospel of Luke) or in quotations from other works. 1 2 feature that James D. G. Dunn often calls “the same yet different.”2 Time and time again, the evangelists narrate the same story of Jesus with different wording and various details. The reasons for this continuity and discontinuity among the gospel accounts are unknown as is the person or persons responsible for these discrepancies. Perhaps Jesus himself told the same story differently in various settings, or the varying accounts might be the result of different transmission processes during which the initial message of Jesus reproduced a series of varied versions. They might also be due to the gospel writers who had their own theological agenda that led them to adapt the Jesus tradition. As this series of ideas implies, determining the nature of “the same yet different gospel accounts” (SDGA) is a complex task that takes into account at least three different stages of the Jesus tradition: the initial stage in which Jesus’s words and deeds were revealed, the transmission stage during which the Jesus tradition was more or less conserved and changed over a period of time, and the writing stage in which the evangelists put together the available Jesus tradition into written gospels, again by conserving and changing the traditional materials.3 Historically, scholars have primarily focused on the last stage of the Jesus tradition—the writing stage—when addressing the issue of SDGA. Our conceptualization argues that because oral communication involves a greater focus on social interaction with the communication recipient than does written communication, oral communicators are more likely to express self-related thoughts than are writers, thereby increasing their self-brand connec- tion (SBC).     New evidence on the death of Philo of Larissa (PHerc. 1021, col. 33,42 -34,7) 1. Introduction Philo of Larissa (159/58 or ca. 147 -84/83) was the last distinguished representative of the so-called sceptical Academy.1 He succeeded Clitomachus as scholarch in 110/09 BC and fled from Athens to Italy on the eve of the Mithridatic War and Sulla’s siege of Athens (88 BC). In Italy, Philo lectured on philosophy and attracted a lot of young noblemen, amongst them Cicero.2 A lot of valuable information about Philo’s life can be found exclusively in the final columns of Philodemus’ Index Academicorum (PHerc. 1021, col. 33,34). Although several improvements that could be made to the text since Dorandi’s edition (1991) have been published,3 a fragmentary passage between the report of Philo’s death and the mention of a person who obviously succeeded or deputised him during his absence continues to represent a puzzle to scholars (col. 33, 44 –col. 34,2). This is all the more regrettable if we take into consideration that the content of these lines could have a significant impact on the suggested supplements in the surrounding context and the whole syntax. This makes the reading of the whole ‘essay’ (as the author himself repeatedly calls his book) quite an enterprise even for someone who is fairly well acquainted with scholarship on Theophrastus. From the title of the book, readers might expect a broad study on Theophrastus and his scholarly contribution, including the field for which he is most famous, viz. botany. Thus, for those interested in the history of natural sciences, it could be disappointing to find out that the book is rather a full-length treatment of Theophrastus’ Characters, which, as the sleeve-note mentions, ‘aims to locate this influential work with respect to the political and philosophical worlds of Athens in the late fourth century’.     HAN BALTUSSEN PERIPATETIC EPISTEMOLOGY AFTER ARISTOTLE: THEORISING KNOWLEDGE FROM THEOPHRASTUS TO ARISTOCLES ABSTRACT: This paper assesses the evidence for Peripatetic epistemology after Aristotle, in particular how the Peripatetics dealt with their Aristotelian heritage. It examines the fragmentary remains of Peripatetic works between the death of Aristotle and the first century BCE. The account attempts to reconstruct some of the views in logical works and those sources which were inspired in part by Aristotle’s wide-ranging views on knowledge acquisition and justification. Apart from Theophrastus, the main figures discussed (including some of their interactions with other thinkers) are Strato of Lampsacus, Hieronymus of Rhodes, Aristo of Ceos, Critolaus, Boethus of Sidon and Aristocles of Messene. SOMMARIO: Questo articolo si occupa delle testimonianze relative all’epistemologia peripatetica dopo Aristotele; si tratterà, in particolare, di comprendere in che modo tali testimonianze affrontino l’eredità aristotelica. Il contributo, dunque, esamina i testi frammentari delle opere peripatetiche tra la morte di Aristotele e il I secolo a.C.
