“An oasis of calm in an otherwise increasingly loud and chaotic world.” “The Central Park of Norfolk/ Beach.” “My happy place!” These are all phrases I’ve heard over the past year to describe this place —one of the most biologically diverse areas in our region. Did you know that over 196 Families, 1,039 Genera and 8,300 Taxa of plants live here? Altogether 255,426 individual plants plus nearly 2,000 plant masses call Norfolk Botanical Garden home. This Annual Report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2018, celebrates the work of volunteers, members, donors and staff in stewarding this home for a diverse world of plants, insects, birds and mammals visited by over 375,000 people last year. This past year saw the notable return of LanternAsia and the expansion, yet again, of our Million Bulb Walk. Both events were blockbusters, adding over 2,000 new families to our membership. Our revenues continue to be robust and at nearly $6.9 million, I’m happy to say, are our largest in history. In fact our gross revenue has grown a whopping 57% in only five years. All the result of incredible work by our Board, staff and many, many volunteers. Thank you! The Board has committed themselves to utilizing these funds to improve our campus, address aging infrastructure and implement our Master Plan, all while working with staff to achieve an aggressive five-year Strategic Plan for 2014-2018 that will culminate this year. Our Strategic Plan: • Establish the Garden as a leader in environmental stewardship. • Deepen the Garden’s engagement with—and impact in—the community. • Provide a dynamic, high quality and welcoming experience. • Strengthen communications and marketing to build excitement about the Garden. • Ensure long-term financial sustainability. • Strengthen organizational leadership and capacity. The results of this ambitious plan are in the book you’re holding. I’m so proud of the work our team has done in successfully completing the Board’s mandate and look forward to the work ahead on our next plan as we continue to utilize our leadership to address the environmental crisis. Thank you for joining us in our work this past year. Michael P. Desplaines President & CEO
