Reacting to the medium’s growing significance, members of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) accepted that they had a wartime responsibility to maintain civilian morale. The CBC thus unequivocally supported the national cause throughout all levels of its organization. Its senior administrations and programmers directed the CBC’s efforts to aid the Canadian war effort.

Leading professor in the U of A Faculty of Medicine who arrived for lectures in his chauffeur-driven limousine wearing a top hat, morning coat, striped trousers with spats over highly polished shoes, carrying his poodle. Dr. E.T. Bell. Leading pathologist of his time and Leone’s PhD advisor. Dr. Arthur Hertig. Harvard buddy and colleague who became a lifelong friend, later a professor of pathology who helped develop “The Pill”. Wolfgang Rittmeister. Scion of prominent Hamburg family, Leone’s main man until she met Folke Hellstedt in 1931. Lifelong friend, “uncle” to Leone’s son. Dr. John Rittmeister. Wolfgang’s brother, took lectures from Jung with Leone in Zürich, became a psychoanalyst and dept. head at the Göring Institut in Berlin. Active along with other members of the Rittmeister family in opposition to Nazis, including trying to get Jews out of Germany. Arrested for treason in in Berlin in 1942, guillotined in 1943. Wilda Blow. Opera singer from Calgary, studying in Milan, working in Hamburg. Matthew Halton. Foreign correspondent, “the voice of Canada” on radio during WW2, colleague of Ernest Hemingway on the Toronto Star, early opponent of Hitler and advocate of Churchill. Controversial U of A Gateway editor in 1928. Jean Halton. Matthew’s wife, also a U of A graduate. Jean and her sister Kathleen Campbell, from Lacombe, went with Leone on a scarcely believable three-month motoring trip through Europe and North Africa in 1934.

    THE FUTURE OF CBC'S PAST: CBC RADIO ARCHIVES1 By Ernest J. Dick Introduction: In 1970, the ARSC Journal (Vol II, No. 2/3) published an important article on broadcast preservation within the English network of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Robin Woods summarized the current status of preservation within the CBC, and made an eloquent and compelling appeal for the development of systematic program archives at the CBC. I returned to this article many times in my work as an archivist with the Sound Archives at the National Archives of Canada. Both its vision and its invaluable information on radio archives were useful and inspiring. Most recently, I have had occasion to revisit this article again in my assignment at the CBC to do a review of the current status of CBC archiving. My report entitled "The Future of the CBC's Past" attempts to carry on in 1990 what Robin Woods began in 1967. My task is inherited from Robin Woods, clearly the CBC's first archival conscience, and I am proud to be continuing the work that he began. This article will take the component of the CBC broadcast heritage of greatest concern to ARSC members, its radio archives, and bring readers up to date on its development. It was prompted by a positive response to the audio presentation to the joint IASA/ARSC/CAML conference in Ottawa in May 1990. Two parallel and complementary developments have occurred at CBC Radio Archives over the past 2 years. First, the functions and legitimacy of Radio Archives have become more closely integrated into radio programming.

    “To Ensure the Continued Life of the Industry”: The Public Relations Campaign of the Ontario Brewers during WWII MATTHEW J. BELLAMY* The Second World War witnessed the resurgence of the temperance movement in Canada. In an effort to keep prohibition a thing of the past, the brewers of Ontario undertook a public relations campaign to convince Canadians that brewing and beer drinking were beneficial to the war effort. This paper examines the evolution of that campaign in order to add to our understanding of “the ethos of advocacy.” The paper argues that during the war public relations became a subtle form of lobbying as the brewers attempted to improve their public image so as to achieve several political and economic objectives. Il y a eu au Canada résurgence du mouvement en faveur de la tempérance au moment de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. The first war correspondents from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Art Holmes and Robert Bowman, shipped out from Halifax in late 1939, and for the duration of the war vested themselves in standard military attire.     Tuning in: Canadian Radio Resources In the 1920s, private commercial radio quickly became a cheap' and popular form of mass entertainment in Canada. From 1932 onward, with the formation of the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission and its successor, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), public radio in Canada not only ex- tended the mass entertainment programming of the private stations, but also nourished the growing sense of Canadian national identity. Through the years of the Great Depression and the ministries of R.B. Bennett and W.L. Mackenzie King, and during World War 11, the Cold War, and the era of Louis S. St- Laurent and C.D. Howe, millions of Canadians were informed, entertained, and diverted by the news, music, variety, comedy and drama which poured into their homes through radio sets. Radio formed opinions, interpreted the world, patro- nized the arts, modified social habits2, and was the only real expression of a Canadian national theatre. Yet, despite today's preoccupation with nostalgia and Canada's continuing obsession with the exact nature of its identity, very little serious attention has been paid to assessing the content, and, above all, the influence of Canadian radio programming in those years'. This neglect of Canadian radio resources as a fit subject for study reflects the long-standing disinterest of Canadian archivists in broadcast materials. Re- search depends on documents, and Canadian archivists have been lax both in recognizing the value and significance of broadcast documentation and in en- suring its preservation. This is particularly true for radio in its heyday-aperiod of about thirty years (1925 to 1955 approximately) when radio, unchallenged by television, enjoyed pre-eminence as an entertainment and cultural medium.
