The course fulfills the requirement of a non-western courseoption in the Integrative Studies Program of. the Whitney M.Young, Jr. College of Leadership Studies. Kentucky State University was founded in 1886 to African-Americans. As such it was part of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's) system. RATIONALE: In view of Kentucky State University's mission to assumethe role of a liberal arts institution, the study of other people's cultures and theircontribution to human progress and development in an increasingly complicated world is essential.This need for a well balanced global awareness, therefore, makes the study of African cultures acrucial component of an integratedstudies program. 1GS 301, a studyof African Cultures, offers students acomprehensive exposure to the historical, social, political, artistic andeconomic trends of Africa; itis therefore relevant for broadening the student's perspective. The studyof Africa's cultures also provides studentswith a means of taking a morerealistic and more comprehensive view of othercultures, Western and Non-Western. GOAL: The goal of the course is to introduce students toAfrican studies through selected readingsof primary and secondary materials. As an introductorylevel course, the course is intended togive students only a taste of what Africa is all about.Being interdisciplinary in approach, this course politics, willprepare students for morespecialized studies of African peoples,cultures, economics, and artistic expressions. OBJECTIVES: I.Through the study of African history, studentswill learn to understand and appreciate Africa's contribution to human progress and civilization. and 2.Through the study of African philosophy andreligion, students will learn to understand appreciate African's view of the universe and theirplace in it. 3.Through the study of various African societies,students will gain an understanding of the richness and the variety of African cultures. 4.Through the study of African sculpture, music, andliterature, students will understand the wealth and significance of African artistic expressions. 5.Through the study of African political and social structures,students will learn to appreciate Africa's role in global political economy and have a greaterunderstanding of international relations. 6.Through the integrative study of each of the above aspectsof African cultures, students will have a conceptual framework for understanding andappreciating other cultures. Morocco Until recently, the information available on cannabis cultivation in Morocco pointed to the fact that it had been increasing since the 1980’s. However, estimates of the actual size of the area under cannabis cultivation and of the production of hashish in Morocco have been a debated and, at times, controversial. In February 2003, however, the Moroccan government signed a cooperation agreement with UNODC to conduct a survey on illicit drug production (cannabis) and organized crime in Morocco. The first survey on cannabis production was launched in July 2003. Results of the 2003 UNODC Morocco Cannabis Survey (1) Cannabis Cultivation The survey estimated cannabis cultivation at about 134,000 hectares over the total area covered by the survey (14,000km2, five provinces of the Northern Region). This represents 10% of the area surveyed, 27% of the arable lands of the surveyed territory, and 1.5% of Morocco’s total arable land (8.7 million ha). (2) Cannabis and cannabis resin production The total potential production of raw cannabis was estimated to be around 47,000 metric tons and the potential cannabis resin production was estimated at 3,080 metric tons. (3) Cannabis producers In the cannabis production area, 75% of the douars (villages) and 96,600 farms were found to produce cannabis in 2003, representing a total population of about 800,000 persons (the 1994 census gave a figure of 1.65 million for the rural population in the area), i.e. 2.5% of Morocco’s total population, estimated at 29.6 million in 2002.

OSAC encourages travelers to use this report to gain baseline knowledge of security conditions in Morocco. For more in-depth information, review OSAC’s Morocco country page for original OSAC reporting, consular messages, and contact information, some of which may be available only to private-sector representatives with an OSAC password. Travel Advisory The current U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory at the date of this report’s publication assesses Morocco at Level 2, indicating travelers should exercise increased caution due to terrorism. Review OSAC’s report, Understanding the Consular Travel Advisory System. Overall Crime and Safety Situation Crime Threats The U.S. Department of State has assessed Casablanca as being a HIGH-threat location and Rabat as being a MEDIUM-threat location for crime directed at or affecting official U.S. government interests. Media reporting and anecdotal observations indicate that the frequency and intensity of crime in Morocco’s major cities is similar to other large cities in North Africa. The most common crimes are petty crimes, such as pickpocketing, theft from unoccupied vehicles, robberies, purse snatching, and burglaries. Criminals focus on high-traffic and high-density areas such as tourist sites, markets, medinas, and festivals in major cities. Criminals tend to fixate on people who appear unfamiliar with their surroundings, dress in obviously foreign clothing, or otherwise draw attention to themselves. Due to the low availability of firearms in Morocco, when violent crimes occur, they tend to involve edged weapons such as knives (and occasionally swords).

    Data Literature Review: Final Term Project GISWR Fall 2013- Maidment Madeline Clark Abstract: This study set out to gather data and conduct a preliminary analysis of water availability and quality in Morocco, and is part of an ongoing project to describe the physical and hydrological landscape of Morocco in real-time. For the purpose of consistency, this study has not focused on including the Western Sahara as part of its analysis. Due to gaps in data, this study will not be able to present a clear picture of the state of water availability and quality in Morocco, but important trends have become clear throughout the data collection and map- making process. This paper will center around three themes: water management in Morocco and the role of Office Nationale de l’Electricitié et l’Eau ONEP, water quality and human activity, and to the relationship between agricultural and water systems focused-aid and water availability and quality in Morocco. Future directions will include analyzing indices like the above, and public-health, governance, and socio-economic metrics (including but not limited to: access to clean drinking water, infant and maternal mortality, education, and income) at the municipality and household level. This study could also improve its use of advanced statistical and geo-statistical methods to forecast water availability and quality in highly populated basins. These ideas tie into the larger issues plaguing water management in Morocco, which include climate change, soil erosion, and an imbalance of water supply between north and south.     Berbers of North Africa Background: The Berbers, who call themselves “imazighen” live across northern Africa and trace their roots to the indigenous pre-Arab, pre-Islamic cultures of the region. Approximately 9.5 million of them live in Morocco, about 4.3 million in Algeria, and smaller numbers in neighboring countries. The language belongs to the Afro-Asiatic language family, making it related to the ancient Egyptian language but not to modern Arabic (though Arabic is widely spoken as a second language). Most Berbers are Muslim though remnants of earlier traditions have survived as well. Berbers constitute about one-quarter of the population of Algeria. Of these Berber- speaking Algerians, about half are Kabyles, who live mostly in the mountains east of Algiers (though, as we see in the movie, many have migrated to the cities). Most Berbers, like their Arab co-nationalists, are Sunni Muslims. Throughout the 1980s, the Kabyles revolted against Algerian government policies of Arabization. Discontent and sporadic fighting has continued.     The Berber Identity: A Double Helix of Islam and War By Alvin Okoreeh Mezquita de Córdoba, Interior. Muslim Spain is characterized by a myriad of sophisticated and complex dynamics that invariably draw from a foundation rooted in an ethnically diverse populace made up of Arabs, Berbers, muwalladun, Mozarebs, Jews, and Christians. According to most scholars, the overriding theme for this period in the Iberian Peninsula is an unprecedented level of tolerance. The actual level of tolerance experienced by its inhabitants is debatable and relative to time, however, commensurate with the idea of tolerance is the premise that each of the aforementioned groups was able to leave a distinct mark on the era of Muslim dominance in Spain. The Arabs, with longstanding ties to supremacy in Damascus and Baghdad exercised authority as the conqueror and imbued al-Andalus with culture and learning until the fall of the caliphate in 1031. The Berbers were at times allies with the Arabs and Christians, were often enemies with everyone on the Iberian Peninsula, and in the times of the taifas, Almoravid and Almohad dynasties, were the rulers of al-Andalus. The muwalladun, subjugated by Arab perceptions of a dubious conversion to Islam, were mired in compulsory ineptitude under the pretense that their conversion to Islam would yield a more prosperous life. The Mozarebs and Jews, referred to as “people of the book,” experienced a wide spectrum of societal conditions ranging from prosperity to withering persecution. This paper will argue that the Berbers, by virtue of cultural assimilation and an identity forged by militant aggressiveness and religious zealotry, were the most influential ethno-religious group in Muslim Spain from the time of the initial Muslim conquest of Spain by Berber-led Umayyad forces to the last vestige of Muslim dominance in Spain during the time of the Almohads.

Lesk The purpose of this study is to investigate the role that Digital Libraries (DLs) can play in the transmission of information for non-literate people in the developing world. People from oral cultures are well-positioned to exploit DLs as a way of accessing audio- visual (A/V) documents if the DL is properly adapted. Cultural heritage documents created by researchers during fieldwork may be audio, video, or images that can be sources of national pride for non-literate citizens; these documents could be stored in a cultural heritage DL (CHDL) for online access by non-literate citizens. The primary methodology employed in this study is a review of relevant literature. National culture and universal usability contribute to cultural usability, the human aspects of DL use being explored. Machine aspects of DLs are investigated within the Library and Information Science (LIS) framework, with an emphasis on theories of organization of information and information retrieval, and a complementary discussion of the read/write Web.
