PROFILE Chlorophylle Chlorophylle, a -based manufacturer and distributor of win- ter outerwear and outdoor living gear, is the brain-child of Gilles Couët, a word traveler, adventurer, and fourth degree instructor in 10 differ- ent disciplines — including speleology, cross country skiing, kayaking, bicycle touring, summer and winter camping, canoeing and archery. Couët’s interest in outdoor equipment was stimulated in the late 1970s when he led a three-year expedition that traveled from Quebec to Alaska and back again. During another trip about that time, which took him on a tour of the three Americas, Couët tested out an assort- ment of outdoor gear for several American manufacturers. Chlorophylle started as a small outdoors shop Couët founded in the early 1980s with about $3,000 and the help of a few friends. Over the next 20 years, he established a network of 10 concept boutiques in various parts of Quebec. Today the company’s products, which are available through hundreds of retailers across Canada, include jackets, pants, tops, underwear and accessories for men, women and children, as well as a range of sleeping bags, tarps and gaiters.

Garments are made with a blend of traditional insulation components — down — and technically advanced outer shell components. To ensure quality and satisfaction, people who live and work in cold climates test the outerwear. “We’ve married futuristic technology with traditional insula- tion,” explains Yates. “That seems to be what we’ve done uniquely.” Canada Goose is distributed across Canada and the United States and in every major European city, with Scandinavia as the top destination.

SIERRA DESIGN PROFILE Sierra Designs Originally known for versatile outerwear, Sierra Designs has been making technical but user-friendly clothing for the active and armchair athlete since 1965. Six years ago Sierra introduced activewear, soon followed by lighter and heavier versions of the original. Constructed using the polyester performance knit spectrum, the activewear features a range of tops with a waffle face and a wicking back, guaranteed to keep wearers dry. The tops incorporate an antimicrobial treatment that helps control bacterial growth. With eight styles in each line and an average of six to eight colors per style, plus a new smooth-face version coming in Spring ’06, there are a lot of choices. But Sierra hasn’t forgotten its classic items. The company’s outwear is made of a poly- ester two-ply shell fabric that uses a laminate phase-change membrane that allows the fabric to respond to temperature changes.“What this means for consumers is that as they become more active, they start to breathe better,” explains Chet Gulla, marketing man- ager. “When they are less active, the jacket keeps more heat in.” Sierra is currently distributed in Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland.

11 Activewear Canada’s terrain and climate put activewear to the test

Why is Canadian activewear so popular RAD SPORTS / ARC’TERYX with buyers worldwide? There are several reasons. It’s partly due to Canada’s international reputation for dependability and partner- ship, two qualities that inform the design, engineering, marketing and distribution network of the country’s high-performance sports, action and recreational apparel. But there is another factor. This vast, rug- ged country promotes an athletic, sports- oriented lifestyle that tests the endurance of apparel for a huge range of interests and pursuits. From untouched, pristine lakes and towering peaks, to rolling surf and arctic ice, to putting greens and hiking and riding trails, Canada’s terrain and climate put activewear to the test, and only the best survives. The keyword is innovation. Canada’s activewear companies constantly challenge the status quo and set new standards for technical fabrics and construction. “When a little climbing company from Vancouver approached us with a need for fabric that had more breathability and stretch than a shell without giving up the benefits of a shell, we went to work. We love a challenge. Working together to refine the functional parameters, we developed what evolved into a new series of fabrics known as Polartec® Power Shield®, and a new category of gar- ment known as soft shell. We look forward to their next ‘impossible’ request.” Doug Lumb, Product Development, Malden Mills Industries, Inc., about Arc’teryx Canada has a vibrant youth culture that embraces X-treme sports. Vancouver, BC, where many activewear companies are situ- ated, is the global epicenter of mountain-bik- ing and snowboarding, and the region, which includes the resort Whistler/Blackcomb, is

Orage is a major player in international ski competi- tions, as sponsor of the Orage Masters and Orage European Freeski Open. Westbeach sponsored one of the world’s first snow- boarding contests in the early 1990s. Louis Garneau spent 13 years as a global cycle racer, and started manufacturing cycling clothes in 1984 after participating in the Los Angeles Olympic Games. In 2005, Sugoi’s cycling and running apparel was honored on best-of lists in numerous publications, including Bicycling Magazine, Triathlete Magazine, Runner and Triathlon. Meanwhile, Arc’teryx was recognized with a Powder Magazine Editors’ Award for Polartec® Excellence and two Alpinist Mountain Standard Awards. And Westcomb’s ski, mountaineering and hiking apparel incorporate dynamic, weather-resistant proprietary fabrics such as PowerStretch®, Thermal Pro®, Wind Pro®, and many more. Crossbar, which specializes in state-of-the- art uniforms for team sports, was the first athletic wear company to introduce custom knit jacquard collars into its hockey jerseys, offering an innovative way to promote team sponsors and corporate brands. LOUIS GARNEAU PROFILE Louis Garneau Sports Louis Garneau specializes in high-qual- ity cycle wear, cycling helmets and acces- sories, clothing and accessories for cross- country skiing and other outdoors activi- ties, swimsuits, clothing for children, team and corporate apparel and, most recently, bikes and fitness equipment. In the fall of 1983, after 13 years of cycle racing, Louis Garneau, president and founder, and his wife Monique Arsenault, manufactured their first cycling clothes in his father’s garage. The next year, after competing in the Los Angeles Olympic Games, Garneau decided to leave active competition and turn to business. With their wide experi- ence in the sport, the couple was well aware of the specific needs of cyclists and was able to design a range of innovative clothing at competitive prices. Louis Garneau was the first North American company to introduce the sub- limation printing process (printing by thermo-transfer) and to offer an anatomic cut and fit in sports clothing. During the ‘90s, the company took more than 50% of the helmet, cycling and cross-country ski- ing clothing markets in Canada. The company operates six factories and employs more than 425 employees.

Sugoi was founded with the mission of making excellent perfor- mance athletic wear and it has rapidly grown into a leading manu- facturer of athletic apparel, with extensive distribution in North America and Europe. Sugoi was among the very first companies to recognize that rec- reational athletes want and need high performance clothing just as much as pros. Thus, while Sugoi has a complete line of sleek and form-fitting race wear for running, cycling and triathlon, this tech- nology is also used to make outstanding apparel that fits and flatters the recreational athlete. Sugoi has remained at the forefront of athletic clothing by con- tinuing to design clothes that offer an unmatched combination of performance, fit and fashion, and continues to work on the cutting edge of clothing technology, with fabrics that are often proprietary and always highly functional.

The ‘cool’ quotient of Roach’s clothes has a street cred beyond the dirt trails. Kids and young adults wear them on the street, too. Whether it’s creating the first line of mountain bike armor (1993) or originating the concept of “bombproof” clothing, Roach has led the industry with benchmark-setting designs. Roach’s collection of durable performance wear features contempo- rary design, heavyweight fabrics and nylon threads. For men, the range includes jerseys and shorts evoking a timeless, casual look. For women, the L.O. series, which has the same features as the men’s line, but cut to fit a woman’s frame, includes a Lifestyle collection of Ts, hoodies and toques and, of course, Roach’s signature biking body armor.

The name itself — BULA — is a Fijian expression meaning “hello,” “goodbye,” “peace” and “cheers.” BULA From the quirky, easy-going style of Bula’s marketing, to its down-to-earth sales staff and the products themselves, nothing is taken too seriously at Bula. The com- pany’s trendy and playful offerings include a wide assortment of original headwear; angora, merino and boiled wool sweaters; and gloves. NEUFORM PROFILE Neuform Only 18 months old, Neuform is already making its name in the interna- tional market. The company’s ‘Sawathotics’ line, aimed at the sports medicine market, is already used by more than eight pro hockey teams in Europe and many in Canada. Neuform will be introducing a new line and a new direction for its active- wear in 2006. “These lines are aimed at the sport enthusiast,” explains Neuform president Mike Curtis, a former ski racer. “We’ve taken our knowledge of how the human body works and designed products that work with the body, not against it.” Neuform’s ‘Iconic’ line, for men and women, uses silver ion material, which is wicking, so it’s highly breathable. The material helps reduce body odor by killing 99.9% of bacteria. ‘Fever,’ Neuform’s line of performance thermals, is aimed at athletes and active individuals that engage in cold weather sports. “We have a polyurethane knit that adds support/compression to the muscle groups that support the body,” explains Curtis. These materials are integrated with the thermal materials to help sup- port the body, keep it warm and wick it. The line includes supportive leggings and torso garments. All Neuform clothing is manufactured in Canada.
