KILLASSER/CALLOW PARISH NEWSLETTER PARISH WEBSITE - www.killasser.com FR. JOHN DURKAN (094) 92 51431 087 9548532 E-mail [email protected] Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 7th August 2011. KILLASSER/CALLOW PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL MISSION STATEMENT ‘We seek to become a more welcoming community where God’s wonderful message of faith, hope and love is experienced’ MAYO THE 1936 ALL-IRELAND FINAL Mayo became Connacht champions in a replay after Galway’s Brendan Nestor engineered a thrilling 2-4 to 1-7 draw. Nestor almost caused a riot in the process. Galway trailed by 3 points when Nestor forced the ball over the line. A Mayo defender punched it back, the umpire hesitated, and Nestor raised the flag himself. The crowd invaded the field, and it took several minutes to clear it so the last few seconds could be played. After that excitement it was back to Roscommon, where first half goals from Josie Munnelly and Pasty Flannelly settled the issue 2-7 to 1-4 in Mayo’s favour. Roscommon was the venue for the All- Ireland semi-final too, where Pasty Flannelly scored the vital goal in the first half as Mayo beat Kerry 1- 5 to 0-6. The 50,160 who attended the final did not expect to see Mayo hammer a stage-struck Laois team by eighteen points, 4-11 to 0-5. The cause of the disaster was an unfit player. Laois midfielder Bill Delaney limped through the game with two broken bones in his foot, while Mayo’s Pasty Flannelly cleaned up at midfield: “He raced through and shot to the square, to the net, and high between the posts- he seened to inspire his side who played runaway football…Flannelly fielded and raced to either wing, paving the way for Munnelly’s and Moclair’s overwhelming scores. A temperamental team always, the Western champions opened so brilliantly they were always on top of the wave. Speed to the ball was their trump card.” Paddy Moclair followed ten minutes into the second half, and Paddy Munnelly scored again after four minutes of injury time. The verdict was “Laois were beaten for pace and seemed stale and over-trained. Never handling a ball confidently, they muffed many openings.” Mayo’s team had matured. Their team was worth more than one All-Ireland: throughout the 1930’s they solidly dominated the National League, winning six titles in a row between 1934 and 1939, opting out (for Galway to win it) in 1940, and coming back to regain the title in 1941. They had Tom Burke in goal; John McGowan, Paddy Quinn and Purty Kelly in the full back line; Tommy Regan, J. Seamus O’Malley (captain) and George Ormsby in the half backs; Pasty Flannelly and Henry Kenny at centrefield; Jackie Carney, Peter Laffy and Tom Grier in the half forwards. Paddy Moclair scored 1-5 in the final from right corner; Josie Munnelly who scored 0-3 from full forwad was back 21 years later to win an All-Ireland junior football medal in 1957; and Paddy Munnelly scored three goals from left corner. For Mayo it had been a wounderful year as they added the All-Ireland title to their League title and it showed the strength of football in Connaucht who also held the Railway Cup. HENRY KENNY Henry Kenny was a man ahead of his time. He was the star player of Mayo’s first All-Ireland in 1936. Apart from this All-Ireland medal, Kenny won seven National League medals, three Railway Cups and six Connaucht Champions. It is no wounder that Taoiseach Enda Kenny is so proud of his father’s achievements. “Dad was seen as a star, especially as he was in the glamour position of midfield. It was only when I got involved in politics that I came to realise just how revered he was and by older people in particular. A 2 mythology developed in the county about the ’36 team, not least had they went fifty-three games without defeat. People thought they could jump over telegraph poles.” Henry went to teacher training college in De La Salle Waterford. After he qualified he went to teach in Connemara and often cycled sixteen miles to train for club and sixty miles to Castlebar to play for Mayo. Henry Kenny was particulary famous for his fielding of the ball. He was also noted for his catching of the ball in the air, it was said that he turned before his feet touched the ground. His advice always was, “Be moving before the ball comes.” In 1954 Henry Kenny was elected to the Dáil and served there for the next twenty-one years until he died of cancer. Kenny’s political and footballing genes were to some etent passed onto his sons. Kieran Kenny played at midfiled for Mayo during the 1970’s but was short lived due to injury and Enda Kenny entered the Dáil in 1979. Henry Kenny was no doubt the star of the team back then. He had great duels with the mighty Kerry midfielder Paddy Kennedy and was one of the few players who could hold his own with Kennedy. Kenny was known as “the man with the magic hands.” There was no Man of the Matches or dream teams back then but if there was Henry Kenny would have won a lot of awards. He was often descrided as Connaucht’s best midfielder. Fr. Stephen O’Mahony - Kiltimagh 086-8226405. Fr Dermot Meehan - Swinford 094-9252952 Fr. Padraic Costelloe - Foxford 094-9256131 Fr.
