Welcome to the Kings School

It is with pleasure I welcome you to the 2017 Kings School Football Sevens Tournament. King’s has a unique history and place in the development of football in Australia. On a wintry August afternoon in 1880, the first game of football was played on The King’s School field in Parramatta Park. The home team turned out in sky-blue and white jerseys and socks and dark knickerbockers, the colours the boys still take to the field in today. Their rivals were a club formed only the previous week at a meeting held in Aaron’s Exchange Hotel. The team was christened ‘The Wanderers” and in spite of their hasty assemblage they whitewashed The King’s School side, five goals to nil. You may see that our main oval is named Wanderers in recognition of this connection. Like many here today, we were delighted to see the Western Sydney Wanderers reach the A League grand finals again this year. The club although came into existence only three years ago has made Australian sporting history by claiming the Asian Champions League title – a championship no other Australian football has ever won. Like the Western Sydney Wanderers, Football in Kings is making history – it has the highest growth of any sports in Kings and has 500 boys participating. There have been several King’s boys who have gone on to play at an elite level; Travis Cooper (2011) played in Holland for VVV Venlo and is now plying his trade with Manly FC and coaching the 16a team at King’s, Joe Schirippa (2000) trialled with Ipswich Town and had a long career in Sydney with Northern Spirit and Manly, Joe Lee (2012) won a Scholarship to the University of Tennessee in the USA. Among our coaches we have former Newcastle Jets coach and Fiji National team coach Lee Sterrey, ex- English professional (Portsmouth) and Master-In-Charge, Peter Denyer. The Annual Sevens Tournament, now in its 12th year, gives King’s footballers an opportunity to showcase their talent and share the experience of the wonderful game of football with teams from across Sydney. We are delighted that you could join us and I thank you for your continued support of this tournament. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our officials, volunteers and the Kings Sevens organising committee led by Graham Oslington and Ian Tierney, for their dedication and hard work to make this day a success. I hope everyone will have a great day, and for those of you on the field, play with skill, courage and respect - the way our great game should always be played.

History of the Australian Juniors Football Sevens

We have had low division teams and elite Academy players, with at least one Socceroo and over 10 current A-league or overseas based players and our own U23 Socceroo, Travis Cooper all playing over the years. Our first three years had support from Lawrie McKinna and the Central Coast Mariners, followed by Sydney FC and the Wanderers, including the whole Sydney FC squad, fresh from a Sunday morning training run. However, the main point of the day is a celebration of Football at King’s, where the sport in Australia first started. The profile of this tournament is the result of the hard work of Master in Charge of Started in the same year as the A-league, this Football at Kings, Peter Denyer, the extremely hard tournament has showcased the players, the volunteers, working committees of the TKS Football Club and the resources and the commitment to Football at The the support of the headmaster, Dr Tim Hawkes, to King’s School. give all boys at the school the opportunities to enjoy Celebrating the newly constructed Wanderers Field, their chosen sport and has seen Football become opened by the first Chairman of the FFA, John one the most populous sports played in the school. With teams the ranging from the Northern Beaches, the Blue Mountains, The Shire and so many of our local West and North West Sydney Club and school teams, it has proved to be diverse, both culturally as well as the performances but always played competitively but fairly. A great example of this, is that only one Red Card has been issued in ten years of competition. This is also due to the control exercised by the referees from the Granville District Football Referees Association, who have officiated every year.
