16 Stockport College Higher Education Prospectus 2013 17 Awards Celebration

All successful graduates are invited to the annual Higher Education Awards and Prize Giving Evenings, where there is an opportunity to celebrate their achievements with family members, friends and tutors. These events are held on two evenings in either October or November and are the biggest Blue Ribbon ceremony in the Stockport events calendar. Students have told us they appreciate their hard work being recognised, particularly if their course does not have a university graduation ceremony attached to it.

Students are able to dress formally in a gown or more informally in their own clothing, whichever is their preference. Photographs can be organised with the professional company and/or taken by friends or college staff. Some students like to have a picture of their group with their tutor as a lasting souvenir of the course.

40 Stockport College Higher Education Prospectus 2013 41 Petra Stridfeldt BA (Hons) Photography graduate I worked for quite a few years as an Information Analyst in a pharmaceutical company before I came to College as a mature student. I believe life experiences can be advantageous when studying a course like art photography.

I had previously studied at quite a few other Colleges and Universities in both the UK and in Sweden. I actually came to Stockport College first because it was near to Macclesfield, which is where I live, but the decision was made after visiting the college and talking to the tutors and the students at the time.

I really enjoyed being a student especially the opportunity to discuss the work with tutors and other students as well as the possibility to use well-equipped studios and darkroom. We were also encouraged to try our both traditional photography as well as digital photography, which really made the course brilliant. I was also lucky to get a tutor that really understood my work and that I could discuss different issues openly with, it helped the class sizes were smaller.

I graduated in 2011 and was delighted to pass with first class hounours. It felt really amazing and I surpassed the goals I had when I started the course, as English was my second language. The course involved a lot of essay writing I was from the start a bit worried that would influence my results.

I’ve been lucky to exhibit my work in Manchester, Liverpool and London which has opened up a few opportunities for me. My future plans are to finish off two private art projects and also to continue to work on some exhibitions that I am involved in.

48 Stockport College Higher Education Prospectus 2013 49 Donna Robinson Foundation Degree in Early Years I came to Stockport College in September 2010, to study a Foundation Degree in Early Years. The College was local to me and I had heard good feedback from other students who had also studied there in the past. The College also offered me a degree course I required for my future careers path.

I really enjoyed being in college and one of the main highlights was meeting and making friends with other students. The first year we were required to form a group to do a presentation. As a group we still meet to assist each other in our assignments.

The support from the tutors was tremendous nothing was too much trouble, you could email your work and within a couple of days have a response to assist you.

It felt very surreal when I was told I had passed and I have just opened my own pre-school with a fellow student. We hope in the future to open another pre-school, my academic aspirations are to complete my 3rd year and gain my BA Honours degree.

72 Stockport College Higher Education Prospectus 2013 73 Amy Hulme HNC Construction I began the course in 2008 when I already worked as a Building Control Inspector and I was kindly given the opportunity to have day release to pursue the HNC in Construction. After researching various courses Stockport College provided the most relevant qualification suitable to my role and the best facilities in the locality.

Throughout my two years I studied an array of subjects’ pivotal to construction including Health and Safety which is essential to those working in and around any works. I already had a Building related degree and HND however the HNC gave me an insight and further learning outcomes on subjects previously not covered.

The college provided excellent facilities with a large and informative library and computers accessible for database and research purposes at all times. The course was well structured from semester to semester and progression was achievable with the assistance of the lecturers, their guidance and some hard work. Each module was broken down into two or three sections achieved through essays, group or individual projects and presentations. The lecturers in return provided prompt marking and constructive feedback and criticism.

Since graduating I have undertaken my professional interview and achieved membership with the Association of Building Engineers, something I was wished to achieve once and on the proviso I passed the HNC.

I have many fond memories of my time at Stockport College and recommend the course to anyone who is considering or wishes to have a career in the construction or property sector.
