Sterling, I am greatly indebted to Honorable B. J. Peters, Enoch Smith and James Mof ) fett. I also freely used a sketch of Mt. Sterling pub lished four years ago by Walter Gruelle; I also obtained many valuable facts from Butler's and Collins' His tory of Kentucky. -Thomas Calk allowed me to in spect some ancient papers filled with important facts. A sketch in the Courier Journal a year ago supplied me with some pleasing suggestions. The destruction by fire of the early records of the town and county, has deprived me of much valuable material. I feel this sketch is very imperfect and almost unworthy of publication. It may, however, provoke investigation and develop new facts. I trust, at least, it will serve to preserve in the memories of the coming generations what has been gathered up concerning the history of our early days.-R. R. -
The Cameronians the Burgh & the Barracks the Cameronians the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Can Be Traced Back As Far As 1689
Cameronians The Cameronians The Burgh & the Barracks The Cameronians The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) can be traced back as far as 1689. Richard Cameron, a Presbyterian, was an ordained minister in the Scots Kirk, and was branded a traitor for his religious teachings. He openly incited rebellion against King Charles II for religious prejudice, and during an ensuing battle with Government troops, he was killed at the Battle of Aird’s Moss, Ayrshire, in 1680. His Covenanter followers were granted amnesty when King William II came to the throne, and the Cameronian Regiment was created from them. They can be traced back to 1689 when they were known as The Earl of Angus’s Regiment (The Douglas family). On joining the Cameronians, a bible was issued to each new recruit and every Cameronian carried it with his kit. This dates back to Richard Cameron, founder of the Regiment. The bible had the last four numbers of the soldier’s army number stamped on inside back cover, and the Cameronian logo on the front. Cameronian Bible In 1881, the amalgamation of the 1st Battalion 26th (The Cameronian) Regiment of Foot and the 2nd Battalion 90th Regiment of Foot (Perthshire Royal Volunteers Light Infantry), became The Scottish Rifles, and were based at Hamilton Barracks, which had originally been a Cavalry Barracks. In 1891, permission was given for the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) to wear the Douglas Tartan, which they did from 1892. The Cameronian badge, incorporates the Douglas Star, one of the oldest emblems in Scottish history, it is in fact a roundel, which is the wheel of a spur. -
2017 Summerhill Stud Sale of Mares and Weanlings
“As One Door Closes, Another One Opens…” There is never a good time to do this, more so as it involves the dispersal of the families that have brought international recognition to Summerhill. When our former stud manager John Slade, was assisting with our mating plans last July, he was charmed by the layered evolution of our broodmares through generations of the leading stallions Northern Guest, Home Guard, Liloy, Rambo Dancer, National Emblem, Fard, Kahal and Muhtafal, all of them “top ten” luminaries, several of them national champions in one category or another. While this is an emotional time for all of us, it’s an opportune one for our colleagues. Our good friend Graham Beck, laid the foundations for his stellar successes at Highlands and Maine Chance through his legendary “raids” on their stock, as well as those of the Noreen, Scott Bros. and Hartford studs. For our own part, the partnerships we’d assembled in 1987 were dispersed on their maturity in 1998, and we were left with just 26 mares on the farm; seven years later, through our re- investment in those families, we’d won the first of ten national premierships. Famously, the dams of Jet Master, Royal Chalice, Angus and Pierre Jourdan, among many others, were acquired right here, as was Varsfontein’s “Blue Hen”, Secret Pact. While Summerhill’s successes owe much to the stallions that’ve decorated our barn over the decades, it’s arguable that we’ve never been better served than in the outstanding young sprinter-milers currently doing duty here, Act Of War, Capetown Noir, Willow Magic and Linngari; they comprise the bulk of the covering sires in the catalogue. -

Impressions of Empire: Autograph Books As a Historical Source, 1899–1919
Impressions of Empire: Autograph books as a historical source, 1899–1919 Alexandra McKinnon “Fancy meeting you in Egypt at the Sphinx. It’s a long way to Tipperary,” wrote Lance Sergeant Ian Gordon MacInnes of the 2nd Battalion on 27 January 1915.1 This message was left in an autograph book belonging to Sister Nellie Constance Morrice, who served with the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) during the First World War. While the relationship between the two is otherwise unknown, they perhaps knew one another from Sydney. MacInnes would die shortly thereafter, 2 last seen on the far side of Lone Pine on 25 April 1915. Fancy meeting you in Egypt at the Sphinx. Aside from a portrait, taken in civilian clothes before he It’s a long way to Tipperary. left Australia for the last time, this is the only record of Footslogging at Mena Camp Cairo, Egypt MacInnes in the Australian War Memorial’s collection; 27th Jan 1915. Autograph book of Nellie Morrice. he was not at the front long enough to write home. In the archives of the Memorial, autograph books hold dozens of inscriptions left by men and women during their service, extending across the breadth of Australian wartime experience. The signatures, messages, poems, and drawings left in their pages are a previously unconsidered historical source, and form the basis of this research. Taken as a collective, these autograph books suggest the complexities of the British Empire in the early twentieth century, moving beyond the relationship between Australia and Britain. These records are drawn from the autograph books of ten Australian women, who served as nurses across the battlefields of the South African (Boer) War and the First World War. -
