Celebrate our rich cultural heritage and our legacy of myth and legend, where fairies enchant childhood daydreams and dragons come alive through storytelling. Celebrate our breathtaking landscapes, their bygone memories held deeply within slate and stone, protected by dramatic mountaintops that fall steeply into our seas. 30 years of Clogau. Celebrate it with us. 3 THE STORY BEHIND THE 1854 BLEND The Victorian era was one of discovery, prosperity and knowledge. One of the most significant finds of that age was the discovery of gold in the heart of Snowdonia. The volcanic eruption of Rhobell Fawr over 500 million years ago brought copper and gold from the sea. These precious metal bearing seams were eventually found, heralding the start of the Welsh gold rush. Gold was discovered at the Clogau St. David’s mine in 1854 and it became the richest and most productive gold mine in the Dolgellau gold belt. My father, Bill Roberts, acquired the Clogau St. David’s mine in the mid 1980s and began a small scale mining operation. When I first visited the mine with him, I saw the gold in its raw form. I was struck by the pale rose-yellow tone, unlike anything I had seen, a result of the copper that had previously been mined there giving this rose cast to the mine ore.

  • The Impact of Internal Whitish and Relective Graining on the Clarity Grading of D-To-Z Color Diamond at the Gia Laboratory
THE IMPACT OF INTERNAL WHITISH AND REFLECTIVE GRAINING ON THE CLARITY GRADING OF D-TO-Z COLOR DIAMONDS AT THE GIA LABORATORY John M. King, Thomas M. Moses, and Wuyi Wang Unlike many other characteristics that affect the clarity grade of a diamond, determination of the impact of “whitish” graining and “reflective” graining requires analysis that goes beyond visibility at 10× magnification. The importance of this determination is further underscored by the fact that such graining often is the only characteristic present in large, high-clarity, high- color diamonds. This article reviews the history of reporting on such graining by the GIA Laboratory, considers the causes of the different types of graining most commonly encoun- tered, and examines the methodology and critical assessment GIA graders use to determine the impact of such graining on the clarity grade of a diamond. ne of the most misunderstood features in reflective graining typically consists of internal diamond clarity grading is the impact of reflective planes. O graining, especially internal “whitish” or Many of the forms graining takes (e.g., surface “reflective” graining (see, e.g., figure 1). R. E. Kane’s lines or colored bands) are readily observed, and 1980 Gems & Gemology article, “The Elusive their relationship to clarity can be understood with Nature of Graining in Gem Quality Diamonds,” standard diamond grading conditions and criteria gave the reader an overview of the causes of grain- (i.e., ease of visibility at 10× magnification and loca- ing, illustrated the range of appearances associated tion). But whitish graining and reflective graining with it, and generally outlined its relationship to are often more difficult to distinguish and relate to clarity grading at the GIA Laboratory (see also clarity, since their visibility is influenced more by Kane, 1982).

  • Diamond Guide
What is Diamond Clarity? Almost all diamonds that are mined from the Earth contain flaws. Diamonds are formed under extreme heat and pressure within the earth. As the diamond forms, each one will have different characteristics that may include internal flaws called inclusions and external marks called blemishes. The number, size and positioning of these flaws and blemishes affect the value of the diamond. Clarity is graded on a scale starting at FL (Flawless) down to I3 (Included). A flawless diamond has the highest grade, and has no internal or external inclusions. These are extremely rare, and are high in value. A diamond with an ‘Included’ grading will have inclusions that are detectable to the naked eye and may even affect brilliance. Therefore, these stones tend to be more commercially priced. In some cases, certain types of imperfections can impact the sparkle of a diamond but overall if they are well sourced, they will not affect the sparkle and life of the diamond. Please see our ‘Clarity Scale’ below which explains each grade in more detail. The Clarity Scale FL IF VVS VS SI I included flawless internally flawless very very slightly included very slightly included slightly included VVS 1 & VVS 2 VS 1 & VS 2 SI 1 & SI 2 I 1, I 2 & I 3 There are no inclusions There are no inclusions, There are some minute The inclusions are minor The slight inclusions are These Inclusions are or blemishes of any sort only insignificant inclusions that are to a skilled grader using noticeable to a skilled easily detectable with visible to a skilled blemishes visible to a difficult for a skilled 10x magnification.

Those with higher budgets can choose better clarity and color ranges. Some notes: 1. When getting rings or items that people will look at up close at, you want to have a minimum clarity of SI2 so that no inclusions are visible to the naked eye. For engagement rings, carat weight is not everything. Pick a diamond with a higher color and cut. 2. With jewelry that contains many smaller diamonds such as tennis bracelets, fashion rings, etc, try to get larger stones. Clarity will not make much of a difference if all the stones are 1 or 2 pointers (0.01-0.02ct) each. For example, try to get a tennis bracelets with 4 or 5 pointers.
