DOCTOR WHO - it's a question and a statement... Compiled by James Deacon [2013] http://aetw.org/omega.html DOCTOR WHO - it's a Question, and a Statement ... Every now and then, I read comments from Whovians about how the programme is called: "Doctor Who" - and how you shouldn't write the title as: "Dr. Who". Also, how the central character is called: "The Doctor", and should not be referred to as: "Doctor Who" (or "Dr. Who" for that matter) But of course, the Truth never quite that simple As the Evidence below will show... * * * * * * * http://aetw.org/omega.html THE PROGRAMME Yes, the programme is titled: "Doctor Who", but from the very beginning – in fact from before the beginning, the title has also been written as: “DR WHO”. From the BBC Archive Original 'treatment' (Proposal notes) for the 1963 series: Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/archive/doctorwho/6403.shtml?page=1 http://aetw.org/omega.html And as to the central character ... Just as with the programme itself - from before the beginning, the central character has also been referred to as: "DR. WHO". [From the same original proposal document:] http://aetw.org/omega.html In the BBC's own 'Radio Times' TV guide (issue dated 14 November 1963), both the programme and the central character are called: "Dr. Who" On page 7 of the BBC 'Radio Times' TV guide (issue dated 21 November 1963) there is a short feature on the new programme: Again, the programme is titled: "DR. WHO" "In this series of adventures in space and time the title-role [i.e.

  • Sociopathetic Abscess Or Yawning Chasm? the Absent Postcolonial Transition In
Sociopathetic abscess or yawning chasm? The absent postcolonial transition in Doctor Who Lindy A Orthia The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia Abstract This paper explores discourses of colonialism, cosmopolitanism and postcolonialism in the long-running television series, Doctor Who. Doctor Who has frequently explored past colonial scenarios and has depicted cosmopolitan futures as multiracial and queer- positive, constructing a teleological model of human history. Yet postcolonial transition stages between the overthrow of colonialism and the instatement of cosmopolitan polities have received little attention within the program. This apparent ‘yawning chasm’ — this inability to acknowledge the material realities of an inequitable postcolonial world shaped by exploitative trade practices, diasporic trauma and racist discrimination — is whitewashed by the representation of past, present and future humanity as unchangingly diverse; literally fixed in happy demographic variety. Harmonious cosmopolitanism is thus presented as a non-negotiable fact of human inevitability, casting instances of racist oppression as unnatural blips. Under this construction, the postcolonial transition needs no explication, because to throw off colonialism’s chains is merely to revert to a more natural state of humanness, that is, cosmopolitanism. Only a few Doctor Who stories break with this model to deal with the ‘sociopathetic abscess’ that is real life postcolonial modernity. Key Words Doctor Who, cosmopolitanism, colonialism, postcolonialism, race, teleology, science fiction This is the submitted version of a paper that has been published with minor changes in The Journal of Commonwealth Literature, 45(2): 207-225. 1 1. Introduction Zargo: In any society there is bound to be a division. The rulers and the ruled.

  • Eco-Activism in Doctor Who During the 1970S
Author: Jørgensen, Dolly. Title: A Blueprint for Destruction: Eco-Activism in Doctor Who during the 1970s A Blueprint for Destruction: Eco-Activism in Doctor Who during the 1970s Dolly Jørgensen Umeå University In 1972, the editors of a two-year old environmentalist magazine named The Ecologist published a special issue titled A Blueprint for Survival, which subsequently sold over 750,000 copies as a book. This manifesto of the early eco-activist movement lamented the unsustainable industrial way of life that had developed after WWII and proposed a new 'stable society' with minimal ecological destruction, conservation of materials and energy, zero population growth, and a social system that supported individual fulfillment under the first three conditions (Goldsmith et al. 30). Blueprint received tremendous attention in the British press and became a seminal text for the British Green movement (Veldman 227–236). This environmental movement of the 1960s and 1970s was substantially different from traditional environmentalists of the early twentieth century who tended to be conservationists interested in wildlife and landscapes. The new environmentalists, whom Meredith Veldman labels eco-activists, "condemned not only environmental degradation but also the society that did the degrading" (210). They combined critiques against pollution with calls for limited population growth and refinement of social systems. Although the early eco-activist movement in Britain petered out politically in the late 1970s (it arose again in the mid-1980s), its radical environmental ideas had begun to permeate society. Vol 3 , At the same time that eco-activists were establishing their agenda, the BBC serial No television drama Doctor Who was enjoying its successful establishment in British 2 popular culture.

VHS 2.0: AMATEUR ARCHIVING ON THE INTERNET AND THE NOSTALGIC RECLAMATION OF RETRO MEDIA by Dax Sorrenti A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (Film Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) April 2012 © Dax Sorrenti, 2012 Abstract The archiving of retro media on the internet has become one of the more prolific examples of amateur archiving in recent years. Using various case studies, I argue for a new understanding of how this orphaned and obsolete media preserves important nostalgic and cultural histories. Not only this, but the preservation of niche film and television programming deserves recognition for the intricate and complex work of amateur archivists, in the aims of validating their work and viewing the sharing of this material as more than simple file sharing. Often providing the only means by which to access material, these archival sites preserve history through its media output, and I provide a glimpse into the motivations and machinations of their inner workings. In need of protection from legal prosecution, and lacking a clear understanding of their place amongst contemporary media in the mainstream, I argue for a nostalgic reclamation of this material, that can co-exist alongside other media with little to no harm. ii Preface The original research for this study, including all correspondence with individuals and the study of website communities, has been approved by the UBC Behavioural Research Ethics Board, certificate H11-02519. iii Table of Contents Abstract.............................................................................................................................. ii Preface............................................................................................................................... iii Table of Contents ............................................................................................................

When Novelizations MatteredBy Jason A. MillerI first read the novelization of "Logopolis" when I was in the sixth grade. At that point, all I knew about "Doctor Who" was from the few 5th Doctor episodes I'd seen on PBS. I borrowed the book from a classmate who was trying to explain how the 5th Doctor came to be. Said classmate is now a life insurance agent in South Dakota and hasn't had any contact with "Doctor Who" in fifteen years. The book he loaned me, however, remains one of my enduring favorites. The novelizations of the "Doctor Who" TV adventures were an unusual breed: for many fans, they served as (at worst) a replacement for, or (at best) an improvement on the series itself. The condensing of a TV script into 120 pages gave rise to a peculiar richness of language that laid the groundwork for a dozen years (and counting) of original "Doctor Who" novels.Reading the back cover of the "Logopolis" novelization reveals a host of words you don't find any more in books aimed at 12 year-olds.
