Im kalten Licht des Frühlings (Pilotfilm) Polizist Sandy Wilson (Steven Robertson) findet geschockt seine Großmutter Mima (Sandra Voe) erschossen vor ihrem Haus. Einen kühlen Kopf bewahrt Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez, der sich bei ihrer Verwandtschaft umschaut. Verwundert stellt er fest, dass sich die Trauer um die Getötete in Grenzen hält. Ihr Sohn Joseph (Alexander Morton) weiß wenig Gutes über die streitbare Frau zu sagen, bei ihrer wohlhabenden Verwandten Jackie Haldane (Lindy Whiteford) gibt es wie gewohnt Champagner. Auf voreilige Schlüsse will sich der erfahrene Ermittler trotzdem nicht einlassen. Im Dorf glaubt man, den Schuldigen bereits zu kennen: den trinkfreudigen Ronald Heldane (Jim Sturgeon). Der bestreitet allerdings vehement, seine Großtante versehentlich bei der Kaninchenjagd erschossen zu haben. Spuren am Tatort lassen zudem auf einen Einbruch schließen. Was könnte jemand von der mittellosen Witwe gewollt haben? Von Wert scheint nur ihr Hof, wo der geschäftstüchtige Duncan Hunter (Mark Bonnar) gerne Ferienwohnungen gebaut hätte. Im Gegensatz zur alten Mima möchte ihr Sohn nun verkaufen. Nicht nur wegen ihm gerät das Grundstück in den Fokus der Ermittlungen: Am Tag vor der Tat fanden Archäologen bei Ausgrabungen einen menschlichen Schädel. Aus welcher Zeit dieser stammt, können Professor Paul Berglund (Martin Wenner) und dessen Mitarbeiterin Hattie James (Gemma Chan) erst nach einer genauen Untersuchung auf der Hauptinsel bestimmen. Von dort erwarten die Insulaner schon bald zahlungskräftige Sommergäste. Da käme es vielen gelegen, wenn der Fall keine weiteren Kreise zieht. 2. Die Nacht der Raben Ein grausiger Fund erschüttert den Küstenort Ravenswick. Bei einem Spaziergang mit ihrem Hund entdeckt Jess Collins (Frances Grey) eine Leiche: Es ist Catherine Ross (Sophia Carr- Gomm), die Babysitterin ihrer Tochter. Die örtliche Zeitung zieht sofort Parallelen zu einem anderen Fall, dem spurlosen Verschwinden eines Mädchens vor 19 Jahren. Denn die Vermisste wohnte im selben Haus wie Catherine. Noch etwas lässt auf einen Zusammenhang schließen: Die erste Spur führt die Polizei zu Magnus Bain (Brian Cox), den die Ermordete am Abend vor ihrem Tod bei einer Mutprobe besucht hat. Auch bei dem früheren Fall stand der kauzige Einsiedler unter Verdacht. Daher scheint im Dorf, wo die Gerüchteküche mächtig brodelt, mit ihm der Schuldige bereits gefunden. Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez lässt sich von der aufgeheizten Stimmung wenig beeindrucken. Hinweise am Tatort lassen den besonnenen Ermittler darauf schließen, dass die Siebzehnjährige ihren Mörder sehr gut kannte. Oder ihm sogar sehr nahestand. Das spricht gegen den gruseligen Alten. Ebenso der Umstand, dass alle Daten auf ihrem Laptop gelöscht wurden. Auch ihr Handy fehlt. Wer möchte da etwas vertuschen? Infrage kommt Kunstlehrer Hugo Scott (Tunji Kasim), den die Schülerin in der Todesnacht heimlich aufsuchte. Seine Erklärung, warum Catherine zu so später Stunde noch bei ihm war, klingt wenig plausibel. 3. Tote Wasser Über einen unerwarteten Besuch freut sich Jimmy Perez. Sein alter Freund Jerry Markham (Iain Robertson) hat auf Mainland zu tun und schaut für einen Drink vorbei. Die Freude währt leider nur kurz, denn am nächsten Tag erreicht Perez eine schlimme Nachricht: Auf einer Küstenstraße kam Markham von der Fahrbahn ab und stürzte die Klippen hinunter. An der Todesstelle, wo die aus Aberdeen eingeflogene Tatortermittlerin Willow Reeves (Nina Sosanya) die Spuren aufnimmt, kommen Perez erste Zweifel an einem Unfall. Zudem findet er heraus, dass der investigative Journalist zu einem Pipeline-Vorhaben recherchierte. Für das umstrittene Projekt soll die eingesessene Fischfarm von Joe Dalhousie (David Hayman) weichen. Um ihn zum Verkauf zu drängen, scheinen dem Konzern Storne Gas alle Mittel recht. Angeführt von Evie Watt (Kari Corbett) machen die Inselbewohner gegen die Pläne mobil. Unter ihnen gibt es ebenfalls tief sitzenden Zwist und sogar alte Feindschaften. Deshalb sind Evie und ihr Verlobter John Henderson (Steven Cree) nicht gut auf den streitbaren Jerry zu sprechen. 4. Sturmwarnung Die Wissenschaftlerin Anna Blake wird tot in ihrem Labor auf der schönen Insel Fair Isle aufgefunden. Jimmy Perez und Tosh setzen über, um die Ermittlungen in dem Mordfall aufzunehmen. Für Perez ist dies ein Heimspiel, da er seine Kindheit auf Fair Isle verbrachte. Doch kurz nach ihrer Ankunft spitzt sich die Lage zu, da ein Sturm über den Shetlands aufzieht, der das Ermittlerteam von den Kollegen auf Mainland abschneidet. Die Unterstützung eines forensischen Teams zur Tatortuntersuchung ist also keine Option. Dennoch gelingt es Perez, den Kreis der Verdächtigen zügig einzuengen. Der Hauptverdächtige, Peter Latimer, wird allerdings Opfer eines Hausbrandes. Die Umstände scheinen alles andere als klar zu sein, und Perez rennt die Zeit davon, da Latimers Zustand äußerst kritisch ist.
