Biography Writing Outline

When you begin your first draft you should have completed the web and have your thinking questions handy for reference. Don’t forget your purpose for writing this narrative—to inform the reader, to highlight a special person’s accomplishments, and to describe your feelings about your person.

Introductory Paragraph: This paragraph will have an attention getter (quote or question), general information (athlete’s name, sport), state your central idea.

2nd Paragraph (Childhood) This is a great place to tell a little about your person’s life. Here again, you need to be more general. Your purpose is not to re-write the biography. By writing about the most important aspects, such as birth date, where they lived, who their family members were, etc.

3rd and 4th Paragraphs (Olympic Participation) This is the place where you talk about accomplishments, motivations (the reasons they did what they did), and character traits (were they brave, peaceful, determined, etc.). What kind of training did they need to do for the Olympics? Who is their coach (es)? Have they had any sport related injuries? If so, how did that affect them? Have they participated in any other competitions for this sport? If so, what awards did they receive? Has your athlete participated in any other sports in their lifetime? What was/is the athlete’s age when they participated in the Olympics? How did they do in the Olympics? Make good choices about how you break your paragraphs up. New information needs a new paragraph. Fourth grade paragraphs need to have a main idea and 2-3 details to support your main idea.

Closing Paragraph Finally you get to tell how you personally feel about the person you read about. Use good adjectives here to describe your feelings. This is the paragraph where you tie everything up. It is a good idea to repeat your central idea in a new way to remind the reader of your purpose for writing this narrative. Make sure to end in an interesting way!
