In both areas Sardinella aurita was the predominant aggregative species; the stocks are known to be genetically independent. Persistent school typology is described by analysing 7 acoustic surveys in Venezuela and comparing with pioneer observations in Senegal. The echo types encountered in both countries were comparable, with S. aurita and their associated spe- cies having comparable schooling behaviour. School morphology appears to be more related to spe- cies than to global characteristics of their ecosystems, as fish school descriptors were similar for both stocks. Nevertheless, S. aurita may adopt different school morphologies. Differentiation between day and night fish schools was mainly due to morphological variables, as determined by fractal dimen- sion. Echo types were different between day and night in both Venezuela and Senegal. This analysis shows that several independent parameters can influence school morphology. However, although schooling behaviour is temporally highly variable, it shows several constant, typical 2D morphologi- cal structures, i.e. echo types. The observation of small pelagic fish schools occurring during the night is not unusual according to the literature, although a strict diurnal schooling behaviour, with scatter- ing during the night, is often reported. Schooling behaviour appears to be a phenotypic expression depending on biotic and abiotic stimuli, intrinsic characteristics and motivation. HADIATY (3), Jacques SLEMBROUCK (1), Napoleon LEMAUK (4), Ruby V. KUSUMAH (5) & Philippe KEITH (6) ABSTRACT. - Oxyeleotris colasi is the first hypogean fish recorded from West Papua. The habitat consists of a freshwater pool in the cave of Jabuenggara located in the heart of Seraran anticline in the limestone karst of Lengguru. The new spe- cies is most closely related to the blind cave fishO. caeca described by Allen (1996) from eastern New Guinea. The two troglomorphic species are hypothesised to be related to O. fimbriata, an epigean freshwater gudgeon that ranges widely in New Guinea and northern Australia (Allen, 1996). Oxyeleotris colasi differs from its congeners by the absence of eyes, its skin and fins being totally depigmented, the presence of a well developed sensory papillae system partly consisting of low raised fleshy ridges on each side of the head, a reduced number of cephalic sensory pores, a reduced number of scales on head and body, a long head with a short snout length, a narrow mouth width and a long upper jaw length, body shape with a shallow anterior body depth and narrow body width, a long and deep caudal peduncle, long predorsal and prepectoral lengths, and a long pectoral fin. RÉSUMÉ. - Oxyeleotris colasi, une nouvelle espèce de poisson cavernicole de Lengguru en Papouasie occidentale (Teleostei : Eleotridae). Oxyeleotris colasi est la première espèce de poisson hypogée décrite de Papouasie occidentale. No spines present in fins, except first ray in dorsal fin of Typhlichthys subterraneus reported as spinous. Single dorsal fin with 7–12 rays. Anal fin with 7–11 rays. Shapes of dorsal and anal fins similar. Dorsal fin origin anterior to anal fin origin. Pectoral fins with 9–12 rays. Pelvic fins present with 3–5 rays (usually 4) in Amblyopsis spelaea, absent in remaining five species. Caudal fin elliptical, lanceolate, or rounded. Fin rays branched, except in Speoplatyrhinus poulsoni. Postcleithrum present or absent. Scales cycloid, small and embedded. Branchiostegal rays 6. Abstract During studies of fish helminths, deposited in the Helminthological Collection of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (CHIOC), some samples of nematodes were studied and identified as Rhabdochona uruyeni Diaz-Ungria, 1968. The present status of the species occurring in South America is discussed and updated. To facilitate further accesses, a worldwide bibliographical survey related to systematic, taxonomic, morphological, biological, cladistical and ecological approaches to the genus, covering a period of 165 years is presented. To date, Rhabdochona (Rhabdochona) acuminata is referred in Argentina, Brazil, and Ecuador, together with Rhabdochona (Filochona) fabianae in Argentina and Rhabdochona (Rhabdochona) uruyeni in Venezuela and now in Brazil, for the first time and in a new host. Also, Rhabdochona spp. are cited in Argentina, Brazil and Peru.

The present paper contains an account of the observations made by me on the fishes of San Diego and vicinity from December 11, 1888, to March 4, 1890. Especial attention was paid to the spawning habits and seasons, the embryology, and migration of the fishesof southern California. A diary was kept of the occurrence of each species throughout the year 1889 and part of 1890. My knowledge of the occurrence of each species is largely based on observations of the fish brought into the markets, which I visited twice or thrice daily, and of those caught with hook and line by the numer- ous habitual fishermen found on each of the wharves, and of those caught by the seiners whom I accompanied on several occasions. Dur- ing the early part of 1888 each individual fisherman sold his catch as best he could and the data for this part of the year are not as full as for the latter part of 1888, when practically the whole catch was brought to two markets, where 1 could see the fish as they were unloaded. The knowledge of the ocean fishes is largely derived from frequent visits to ocean tide-pools, from the fish brought to the markets, and from a two- weeks' stay on the Cortes Banks. As a matter of course, hundreds of Specimens of most species have been observed to every one preserved, and the present paper is to be looked upon as a contribution to the eco- nomic history of the fishes, rather than to the anatomy of the various species.

The developmentally complete systems impart certain levels of sensitivity and acuity to a fish, but fish larvae hatch with rudimentary auditory and lateral line systems that confer poor sensory performance. The structures become more elaborate during ontogeny, with attendant improvement in performance. This review summarizes the ontogenetic changes in the peripheral anatomy of these sensory systems as well as the experimental work that has been undertaken to measure the changing functionality of each. In both systems, the number of end organs increases ontogenetically, roughly in proportion to somatic growth. Improvements in sensory function coincide with, and may be attributable to, these increases in end organs. Acces- sory structures that enhance functionality develop late in the larval period. Problems and recent advances in methodology as applied to larval fishes are discussed. Snakes were maintained at 24oC and fed weekly. Beginning in late August females were tested for the presence of pheromones. Male courtship behaviors served as the bioassay for pheromone presence. All experiments were conducted in an outdoor arena lined with a disposable plastic liner. Volatility of pheromones was measured by placing the female in a clean opaque plastic container, containing 3-3mm diameter holes, on a six cm pedestal in the arena containing one male. Male behavior was observed for 30 min after which the female was removed and placed directly in the arena to determine her attractivity. All eight females tested elicited some male courtship behaviors during at least some trials. All males responded to attractive females. Males showed no interest in other males. Male behaviors included: tongue flicking, trailing, head jerking, head bobbing, head poking and tail searching. No mating was observed. In three trials, males were attracted to the cages containing the females, indication the attractivity pheromone may be volatile, however, in tests using skin wipes from attractive females no males responded. Based on recent studies of how this system develops in zebrafish, and on comparative analyses between zebrafish and tuna, we argue that the evolution of lateral line patterns is mostly determined by variations in the underlying developmental processes, independent of any selective pressure. Yet the development of major developmental innovations is so directly linked to their exploita- tion that it is hard not to think of them as selected for, i.e., adaptive. We propose that adaptation resides mostly in how the nervous system adjusts to new morphologies to make them functional, i.e., that species are neurally adapted to whatever morphology is provided to them by their own developmental program. We show that recent data on behavioral differences between cave forms (blind) and surface forms (eyed) of the mexican fish Astyanax fasciatus support this view, and we propose that this species might provide a unique opportunity to assess the nature of adaptation and of selection in animal evolution. Garra lorestanensis, new species, from Loven Cave, the Tigris River drainage in Iran, is distinguished from its congeners by the combination of characters, including lacking pigment and eyes, having a well-developed mental disc, two pairs of barbels, and naked body. These subterranean fishes are found in Loven Cave, a well-like pool, the natural outlet of a subterranean limestone system of the Zagros Mountains in the Ab-e Sirum or Ab-e Serum Valley near Tang-e Haft railway station in Lorestan Province, south-west Iran (Bruun and Kaiser 1948; Smith 1953; Movagher 1973; Greenwood 1976; Coad 1996; Proudlove 1997; Sargeran et al. 2008). However, G. typhlops is occasionally recorded from the Simarreh River drainage (Mahjoorazad and Coad 2009), with no further confirmed record.
