The European Forum Alpbach 2020 – implementation and programme

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the EFA, like many other organizations, to make massive adjustments and changes. Very early on it was decided that the seminar week would not take place in this year’s Forum and that Alpbach would be organized as a hybrid conference taking place between 23.08 - 03.09. 2020. Our motto was: "If the Forum could take place in 1945, it will take place in 2020". With this year's Forum, Alpbach set an important sign of life in the time of this crisis! It should be emphasized that

- FAN and Alumni Clubs contributed decentralized, organized events (digital/analogue interlinked) for the first time, which were an equivalent part of the further programme of the EFA 2020 Online Conference. - the EFA could only take place physically on site on a very small scale and an elaborate COVID-19 prevention concept was implemented. - we were able to develop new formats for a hybrid conference in a very short time and in high quality (online conference, video production).

2

With the implementation of the EFA we succeeded in achieving the following goals:

1. Staff, volunteers and participants on site were protected and legal requirements were met. Partners of the EFA and local catering establishments complied with the legal requirements. 2. It was ensured that the EFA continued to act as a relevant source of inspiration, that stakeholders were involved, and that partnerships could be maintained this year. 3. We used the crisis as an opportunity and reinvented the Forum as a hybrid format. 4. The financial damage to the EFA was kept as low as possible. 5. The FAN (clubs/alumni) were strengthened in their role through their active involvement in the programme design. 6. EFA alumni were activated by the allocation of free sponsored tickets to this target group. 7. The EFA was able to lay the foundation for similar future hybrid events, which address a broader digital target group. 8. The Alpbach hosts (CCA, hotel industry) were not let down, which is highly appreciated. The EFA showed continuity and perseverance to the outside world. 9. Pictures and videos could be produced for subsequent years and the media response was excellent (see APA press review).

General Information about the programme: Programme EFA2020

• 283 sessions, 63 of them hybrid, 160 virtual, 58 analogue. Of all sessions, 86 were organized with the Forum Alpach Network, 106 with external cooperation partners and 27 by the AIT. This does not include closed sessions or working meetings, nor purely analogue meetings taking place in decentralized hubs organized by the FAN. • 477 speakers, 43% of them women; 196 moderators, 50% of them women • Due to the dissolution of the symposia, 10 thematic strands were defined in the programme for a better orientation for participants. The following number of sessions was located within the strands of topics o 16 Arts & Culture o 61 COVID-19 o 37 Digitization & Innovation o 43 Economy & Financial Markets o 19 Health o 28 Law & Human Rights o 79 Politics & Democracy o 56 Social Cohesion o 41 Sustainability o 27 Technology (exclusive day for the AIT to filter the programme) • On average, the online sessions were very well attended, varying according to topic, time slot and prominence of the speakers, with 70-900 participants per session. The top visited session was the one with UN SG Guterres, with almost 1000 participants. In addition, new target groups could be addressed via live streams (e.g. politico, IMF) and even higher numbers of visitors could be reached. • The hybrid format made it possible to integrate speakers in different ways this year and also offered flexibility in terms of time. On the one hand, the EFA has succeeded in physically welcoming numerous high-ranking guests to Alpbach despite massive restrictions on their freedom of travel and movement. On the other hand, however, the possibility of digital connectivity has made it possible to attract very high-ranking speakers to the EFA at short notice and at low cost, and to provide virtual connectivity for those who had to cancel their travel at short notice due to the pandemic.

Alm Talks

As the English online conference was aimed at an international audience, a format was created to enable to offer primarily Austrian Breakout Sessions to cooperation partners. The scenery of Alpbach and the recognition value of the Forum was thus used to produce "High Quality Content" for the EFA and its partners enable promotion after the Forum.

In cooperation with Terra Mater Factual Studios and a production team, 28 Alm Talks (recorded breakout sessions) were recorded in Alpbach on the roof of the Congress Centre, the Rossmoos Inn, and on the Schafalm. The digital distribution of the mainly German-language content will take place in autumn 2020.

The format of the Alm Talks was very well received by cooperation partners and speakers. Especially the exclusive location (Schafalm) away from the CCA premises and the intimate atmosphere of the talks were positively highlighted. The production process was very complex due to the low flexibility of the format (e.g. little interactivity), the high technical effort, the sometimes difficult differentiation from other formats and the EFA's limited experience in video production. However, the goal of generating high-quality video material with IJP recognition value for communication in the autumn was achieved primarily through the high professionalism and flexibility of the production team. A more detailed evaluation of the format will be made after the autumn communication has been completed.

Alpbach Online

The EFA took place online on the Hopin conference platform. Sessions were "produced" live in Alpbach (mostly with speakers dialling in virtually), in FAN Hubs or purely virtually. Participants actively participated in the discussions via chat function and actively used the various offers of social interaction online. In most cases, the connection of speakers worked without any problems; in some cases there were problems due to IT security restrictions (e.g. strong firewall) of individual organisations, poor internet connections, or poor sound/video quality on the part of the speakers. The supervision of the online conference was very intensive. Depending on the number of speakers, up to five people from the EFA team had to supervise the at least 30-minute onboarding before each session (technical check, welcome words, solving technical difficulties or problems with registration). Other members of the team were responsible for the chats on the online platform. In addition to the EFA Team, several alumni volunteered to help organise the online conference.

In total, the participants spent an average of 25 hours online between 23 August 2020 and 3 September 2020 (median: 11.5 hours). With regard to the time spent online, no distinction can be made between active and inactive participation.

Special formats Online

•1 Thomson Reuters Advanced Media Training, supported by the National Endowment for Democracy

13 journalists from Central and Eastern Europe took part in the third consecutive training course and spent four days dealing with the question of how fact-based information can be made available in a context in which journalists are increasingly confronted with disinformation and fake news, and in which confidence in their profession is declining. All participants of the training commited themselves

6

to publish at least one article about the EFA20 in their national language; a list of publications will be sent to EFAF by TRF.

•2 Femtrepreneurinnen 2020

The women's network programme "Femtrepreneurin" provided 170 female entrepreneurs with concrete skills. The programme also offered space for exchange and direct networking. Each female entrepreneur could choose her own thematic focus according to her individual needs and attend exclusive sessions tailored to her personal situation. In addition to the identified topics, the participating women entrepreneurs were asked about their current problems in advance, so that experts could be specifically requested and solutions could be developed in the course of online workshops. The EFA thus fulfilled its function as a platform for the discussion of important social issues.

•3 Networking Hour:

Every day at 13:00-14:00 a thematic networking for the participants of the EFA took place on Hopin.

FAN & AAN programme contributions The Forum Alpbach Network (FAN) and the Africa Alpbach Network (AAN) were invited to become an active part of the official EFA programme. About 160 proposals were submitted from the networks for five pre-defined programme tracks [Solidarity: Chances of Crises; Humanity: Social Wellbeing and Cohesion; Democracy: Europe and the Rule of Law; Sustainability: Climate Crisis and Sustainable Economic Development; Digitalisation: Utilizing Technology for Bettering Lives]. All proposals were read and evaluated by representatives of the Presidium, the EFA Team, and representatives of the FAN Board.

The EFA Team supported the hubs in the realisation of their proposals. There has been a close cooperation between FAN, AAN, EFA, EFAF and also FANBoard, which has never been done this way before.

70 of the submitted event proposals took place during EFA2020 as part of the online conference. These were organised by 30 hubs and 23 countries were actively involved. The 30 Hubs are divided as follows: 7 Ambassadors, 23 Clubs or IGs and 1 Africa Alpbach Network, consisting of Ambassadors from different African countries. All FAN & AAN events were part of the official EFA programme and could be viewed in the regular programme at 2020.alpbach.org. All FAN events were marked "hosted by EFA country" - whereby the large network of EFA and EFAF was clearly visible.

Overall, the FAN & AAN events were always very well attended and enjoyed great popularity. There was also an event cooperation between 2 hubs and scientific and network partners of the Forum on site in Berlin and Brussels, so that clubs and partners jointly implemented sessions that were planned to be held in Alpbach even before COVID-19.

Tiroltage (22.-23.08.2020) On 22 August, the Tyrol Days took place in an analogue format: The presentations of young researchers and innovators took place in the CCA. After the fair on 23 August, admission to the Congress Centrum was a bit chaotic and there was a huge crowd (-> communication before-hand was not clear enough that only 75 selected participants were allowed in, there was irritation). The event then proceeded in the same way as in previous years, was streamed via the EVTZ websites and was successful.

Opening of the Forum (23.08.2020) Hybrid part: Moderated by Sophie Rendl and with the participation of 3 alumni, there was a discussion with the Federal president of Austria Van der Bellen and Franz Fischler for thematic blocks of 10 minutes per person. The participation of three former scholarship holders from Hungary, Ghana and Poland was technically a bit bumpy due to partly poor internet connections of the speakers, however the quality of the content was good. The admission and seating of the people (although not all of the previously announced partners participated) worked much better than at the Tyrol Day.

Analogue part: Interview between Franz Fischler and Andrea Salzmann about No Border. No Nation. Followed by a concert of 20 minutes: Brass quintet of the Tyrolean Chamber Orchestra Innstrumenti with excellent musicians. The programme was a good mixture of known, unknown, modern and theatrical: Bartholdy, Pirchner, Kerer (contemporary young South Tyrolean composer!), Howard and Pollak.

MEET (26.08.2020) With Karl Markovics, we had a highly professional and well-prepared host, who was very responsive to his guests and their topics. Eddie Izzard, Lisa Kaltenegger and Christoph Türcke were digitally connected. Cesy Leonard and Inge Prader were on site in Alpbach. In the room in the congress centrum itself there were 5 to 25 spectators throughout the day. Karl Markovics managed to take everyone along into the common world of thoughts. In addition, there were many comments and questions online in the chat and a lively interest in the guests.

Karl Markovics remained quite faithful to his previously written text: Thoughts about the origins - of thought, language, art, the primeval fears that came to the surface of our societies through the Corona crisis - and of life in general. As dizzying as the view into the depths is, so great is the wealth of associations and questions that can be drawn from it and asked about it. No final answers are to be expected, what is to be hoped for is the infiltration of surfaces.

There were 5 sessions spread over the day, each lasting 1 hour. -) in the 1st round, KM introduced his "analogue guests" and revolved around the topics of imagination/performance, political/social, acting, visual/photographic - motto: "From what depth do these forms of expression come".

9

-) in the 2nd round Christoph Türcke was the anchor in the discussion. Eddie Izzard was greeted in London and was always included in the conversation. It was about language-philosophical considerations, cross-connections to other areas and common or opposing views. Slogan: The power of the past, repressed, the depth of experiences, stories, inherited knowledge but also prejudices, social reflexes, our childhood, our dreams and the influence of all this on our life and work.

-) in the 3rd round Lisa Kaltenegger from NY was added and with her "the absolute depth" came into play, the natural sciences as opposed to philosophy, physical and "metaphysical foundations".

-) in the 4th round the disciplines were mixed up, slogan: "How deep can I put myself in someone else's world?”

-) in the fifth and last round, all speakers came together from the depths back to the surface and Karl Makovics wonderfully brought all threads back together.

Here is a comment from the chat: "Already clear to me. Greatest, deepest and possibly most honest discussion of Forum 2020. To be kept, in everyone and everyone. I thank the moderator, the guests, the participants via internet. Thank you."

Arts and culture / ART 2020

ART NON STOP All on-site cultural events were freely accessible! Everyone had to register at alpbach.org/arts.

24.08.2020, 14:00, EFA-Loggia Foundations and other errors / Reading Karl Markovics read texts by Alfred Polgar. In beautfiul weather in the loggia in front of an audience of about 40 people, KM read very impressive and very captivating texts that were both funny and serious at the same time and lost none of their current importance. O-tone Sonja Jöchtl: a natural phenomenon.

24.08.2020, 19:30, Garage Minimal Jazz Chamber Music / Concert HI5 master Drums, guitar, vibraphone and bass uniquely and overcome genre boundaries with ease in a playful and creative way. The Tyrolean jazz band surprised the approx. 50 visitors in this new location with entertaining and irritating sounds at the same time, making listening to them both a pleasure and an adventure. Great enthusiasm!

30.08.2020, 10:30, Congress Centrum Alpbach, Elisabeth-Herz-Kremenak-Saal Save the village / film matinee and talk Almost the entire hall (75 seats) was also occupied by many people from Alpbach. The plan to involve the village with this event was definitely successful.

10

The film explores the background of the village dying and shows new perspectives and potentials of village life in our globalised world. It tells of people who contribute to a development with their ideas that allows the village to live on: "It only takes two or three people to burn for a cause. And you have to let them!" The screening was followed by an audience discussion with director Teresa Distelberger and Philippe Narval: Why do villages have to be saved at all - and can they be saved? Afterwards there was a very long and intensive discussion with the audience about the topic in and of itself and the special situation in Alpbach.

30.08.2020, 20:00, Einem-Köstler-Saal Der Daria-Akkord / Lesung How the world of fragrances manipulates our consciousness. Marjana Gaponenko, born in Odessa, awarded the Adelbert von Chamisso Prize and the Austrian literature prize Alpha, read an excerpt from her perfume novel, which will be published in 2021. About 20 listeners (almost all female), even with a large, Alpbach audience, listened to this very special author, who has a special aura surrounding her. Close to the reading, scents were tried and if the book was already finished, some of the ladies would have bought it immediately.

31.08.2020, 20:00, Garage nothing can get me out of this low / Concert On acoustic-electrical journeys Anna Widauer and Chris Norz told the story of one of their artificial- musical languages. The two were fascinated the audience in their harmonious interaction: Anna Widauer enchanted with her soft and very special voice and Chris Norz surprised with the variety of sounds he conjured up from various instruments.

01.09.2020, 19:30, EFA-Loggia fundaMENTALTRANSformation Woodwind quintet and percussion - musicians of the Tyrolean chamber orchestra InnStrumenti invited to be inspired by musical craziness! A colourful commentary with Ligeti, Haydn, Ibert and a world premiere by Manu Delago. Anniversary texts from the fund and archive of the European Forum Alpbach were included! These were read by the colleagues with bravura and a surprise performance on the 75th anniversary of the EFA by Franz Karl Prüller and Camillo was enthusiastically received.

CAMPUS & LABS & RETREATS – Review 2020 & Outlook 2021

1. Alpbach Campus These include continuing education programmes such as summer schools and courses lasting several days, which are aimed primarily at working people. The separation into seminar weeks is intended to signal the focus on professionals and can be further expanded in the future if necessary. The programme aims to meet the complex tasks that arise in one's own professional and academic everyday life with state-of-the-art methods such as peer learning, mentoring and case studies. The campus offer contributes to deepening one's own skills, coupled with the establishment of contacts with decision-makers. It has proven to be a good idea to develop the Campus programmes in cooperation with other partners and to build on the expertise of the partners.

Alpbach Summer School on Entrepreneurship (15.-21.08.2020) This year's summer school was very successfully implemented into the digital environment. The I.E.C.T. continues to cooperate with the AIT within the framework of the Alpbach Technology Talks, receives 30 tickets for the speakers and participants of the Summerschool and is also embedded in the programme of the event "Ticket to Berlin" on the first day of the talks.

Make_Shift - Executive Leadership Journey for Innovation, Transformation and Sustainability Due to COVID-19, the project was not further developed. The new board of directors will decide on its continuation in its programme orientation.

Alpbach in Motion (AIM) The legal requirements could allow the 2-day summit to take place in Alpbach from 30.08. - 01.09. AIM brought together 30 selected executives, although internationality remained limited due to the pandemic. During the selection process, special attention was paid to the gender balance and the mix of participants from corporations, SMEs, NGOs and self-employed persons. Furthermore, attention was paid to the outstanding interest in socio-political and economic processes. The spectrum of topics this year ranged from relevant questions in the area of personal leadership to personal experience. Furthermore, the participants were asked to be able to bring in concrete problems in their own field of work and to discuss them in group processes. Armin Trost, German psychologist and Professor of Industrial and Organizational Psychology at the Business School of Furtwangen University, accompanied the group as a content mentor. The idea of exchange and building up networks was implemented particularly intensively during the event.

Despite increased prevention measures, there was a thoroughly positive basic mood and a mixture of reflection, exchange in nature, and group work. Around ¼ of the participants subsequently joined the Alpbach in Motion Alumni Club.

12

Retreats/Arbeitstreffen beim EFA As part of the Rethink Alliances project, a one-day strategy workshop on the development of a democracy hub took place in the GSA (“DACH-”) region. The 10 participants came from the Mercator Foundation, Erste Foundation, and the Institute for Strategic Dialogue. (see above)

Relaunch of the EFA communication Since April 2020, the communication of the EFA has been run by a fixed team for the first time (management full-time + 1 junior position full-time + 1 social media position 20h). While the team was larger than usual in the time before the Forum, this year, it was considerably smaller than in previous years during the Forum, which put a great strain on the social media force, especially in the area of social media content.

As in the previous year, the English-language "Panorama" magazine of the Forum was designed. On the occasion of the anniversary, this magazine had about 20 pages more than last year and was printed and sent by post to 9,000 contacts in the DACH region and is enjoying very positive feedback.

Unlike last year, the Leporello and annual report were not printed and sent out. The annual report was produced digitally and the Leporello was dispensed completely for reasons of cost, logistics and content. The communications management recommends that the annual report should continue to be produced solemnly digitally in the future and that new ideas should be tried out when it comes to print types.

The decision to opt for a hybrid format also brought new challenges for the communications department, which has been in place since April 2020.

One fundamental improvement was that the new contact management system made it possible for the first time to create a comprehensible and data protection-compliant press distribution list.

A cooperation with the company Isobar resulted in the creation of the first event landing page for the Forum 2020, separate from the alpbach.org website, which was used for the programme playout. This was significantly more modern and more suitable for this year's digital product, but also involved costs and some effort. The future of this page has not yet been decided either.

For the digital marketing of the Forum, the communications team worked together with a digital agency (Media Brothers) for the first time, which meant a significant boost in professionalism and also seems to make sense for the promotion of the next Forum, as the reach and interaction with the contributions could be significantly increased. However, the content for the application came from the communications team and this approach is also sensible for a number of reasons.

Otherwise, it is positive to note that the start of a multiplier strategy has paid off well for the advertisement of the Forum. Partners and friends of the Forum made extensive use of the materials prepared by the communications team especially for this purpose and showed willingness to do so again next year.

13

There is room for improvement in the situation regarding media cooperation, which exists in too large a number and too small a scale and often does not reveal what common goals we are pursuing with the partner organisation. For 2021, the communications team is aiming for consolidation and a clearer strategic line here. What is positive to note here is that with “Deutsche Welle” we have gained another large international media partner, whose organisational DNA fits in very well with the EFA. With the “International Magazine for Politics”, we have gained another small one. Another positive aspect is the cooperation with the Viennese migrant magazine "Biber", which is taking place for the first time this year, enriching the Forum with perspectives and proving to be very appropriate in terms of goals and spirit.

As far as press coverage is concerned, all major Austrian media were represented at the Forum (the ORF Guten Morgen Österreich-Bus even did so for almost a week) and reported almost disproportionately well in relation to the number of speakers present on site who were available for interviews. In 2020 a total of just over 200 journalists were accredited, about one third of them were also present in Alpbach.

Thanks to the possibility of digital accreditation, it was also possible to accredit a number of international media organisations for the Forum, which are otherwise not present to this extent. International media that were accredited for the Forum (mostly digital) in 2020 Financial Times, FAZ, SZ, Politico, Deutsche Welle (Germany, Kenya, Bosnia), Reuters, ZDF Brussels, Bloomberg Argentina, Italy and Vienna, Newsquest UK, Rai South Tyrol, public service radio , Springer Gesundheit and netzpolitik.org Brussels. The session with the Argentinean Minister for Economic Affairs Martín Guzmán and Josef Stiglitz attracted particular interest from the international media. Bloomberg reported on the event, which resulted in numerous English and Spanish speaking media picking up the news. Otherwise, the international media's coverage of the event varied, which could also be partly due to technical difficulties or the not always great digital competence of all editors.

Special reporting in the context of cooperation with Austrian media was also present this year. A special issue of "trend" appeared on the subject of Alpbach and had its own Alpbach section on its website, "Standard" designed a special issue of the health magazine "CURE", the "Wiener Zeitung" an Alpbach edition of its weekend supplement "Wiener Journal", and the “Presse” continued its "Alpbach press" known from previous years as an e-paper, which was mailed daily to all participants on site. In addition, the "Presse" had also set up a separate Alpbach section on its website. In addition, there was again an APA live blog during the technology talks.

In the run-up to the Forum, "Presse", "trend" and "Standard" published several guest comments by the EFA spokespersons or took texts from the Panorama magazine in German.

2) Activities around the anniversary year 2020

Audiovisual archive The Austrian Media Library (OeM) is in association with the Vienna Technical Museum and preserves Austria's audiovisual cultural heritage. It has succeeded in transferring the audiovisual archive of Forum Alpbach to the Austrian Mediathek for digitisation, thus securing the holdings and making them available to the public. The digitisation will be completed in the course of next year and copies of the audio and video files will be managed in the EFA Archive.

Analogue archive The EFA's analogue archives were sifted through by the Association of Austrian Archivists and recommendations for orderly preservation were collected. It is recommended that the archive be professionally processed in order to ensure the preservation of the holdings and to make the archive accessible additionally for the Forum’s own use.

Cooperation Ö1 The programme series "Salzburg Night Studio" dedicated an anniversary programme to the EFA, "The History of the Austrian College". For this, audio material already digitised by the Austrian Media Library could be used, thus complementing the ORF archive material. Furthermore, a multimedia archive on the Ö1 homepage was set up on the occasion of the anniversary year of the Forum (https://oe1.orf.at/75jahrealpbach).

Art and Culture In the anniversary year, special attention should be paid to projects in the fields of art and culture. Due to changes in the way the EFA 2020 is held, two projects related to the anniversary year have been postponed to 2021: A commissioned composition for the anniversary by composer Vincent Pongracz, performed by Klangforum Wien, and a commissioned work by Anna Artaker (working title: OUTSIDE | INSIDE) dealing with the EFA Archive. Four short videos, "EFA Shorts" with ORF archive material, produced by editor Sarah Rogaunig, were realised. These were shown via the social media channels of the Forum and in the online conference. EFA Shorts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zICPnu1IjsI

Reporting on the anniversary year Wiener Zeitung (Wiener Journal), Terra Mater Magazine and Die Presse paid special attention to the anniversary and the history of the Forum in articles. Editors of Wiener Zeitung and Terra Mater reviewed the EFA archive and used material from it. This year's Alpbach Panorama Magazine has a multi-page focus on the history of the Forum.

Events The EFA's planned series of events to celebrate its 75th anniversary could not be carried out as planned. The first event in the series on soil health could be held in January in Kaindorf, Styria. Cooperation with

the European Capital of Culture 2024 - Salzkammergut, Alpine Peace Crossing, the association Menschen.Würde.Österreich and the University of had to be cancelled.

3) EFA Internal & Organisation

Digitisation & Database The EFA - as a sponsoring association, organiser and scholarship foundation - wants to go beyond mere discussion and reflection on digitisation. A comprehensive digital strategy of the EFA is intended to make organisational processes more efficient for EFA staff, to measurably increase customer satisfaction among participants and, in addition, to open up new areas of responsibility, business fields and services within the scope of the EFA's mandate.

At a vision and strategy workshop in autumn 2019, the EFA decided to develop a comprehensive digitisation strategy which is to be implemented in several project phases sequentially until 2023.

Diese Phasen umfassen: 1. Digital processes 2020: Increasing efficiency and facilitating work processes in office organisation are at the forefront of the first phase of the project, as are significantly increasing the involvement of participants and personalising and efficiently designing the support for speakers and partners. Specifically, this includes the implementation of a cloud-based database solution and a user-friendly programme and participant administration, which also includes the EFA scholarship programme. 2. Digital Portal 2022: Establishment and stimulation of the Alpbach community digitally and throughout the year as a further development of services for participants at the event in Alpbach or at other EFA events. 3. Alpbach goes virtual 2023: New functionality in the direction of virtuality, mini university... in the sense of sustainability and climate protection.

Update Herbst 2020:

- The CRM of Microsoft Dynamics Marketing Module has been fully implemented and serves as the only data-bearing system. - The data migration of around 78,000 contacts from 2 databases (Access and scholarship database) was successfully implemented, duplicates were largely checked and cleaned up. - The integration of the Aventri ticketing system was planned for 2020, but was not fully implemented due to the new conditions caused by the Corona crisis. It will therefore have to be checked again in autumn to see whether it is suitable for the EFA. - Despite the 180° turnaround in the implementation of the EFA 2020, the systems were combined and provided with interfaces, so that manual processes were be largely eliminated.

16

Organisational Development The ongoing renewal of the digital landscape of the organisation office of the European Forum Alpbach still requires an intensive examination of the internal work processes, the responsibilities for decisions and the expenditure and added value (= future, financial security). A comprehensive analysis of conference participants is currently being prepared.

The system administration has been operated by HXS since 30.09. This means that only a small support service exists internally and the IT landscape has been outsourced to a company.

Green Meeting Due to the reduced number of people present on site, the EFA2020 did not include an extended mobility concept. However, the hybrid processing resulted in a strong reduction of waste (only about 20-25% of the previous year) and CO2 emissions. In addition, the few events organised by the EFA almost exclusively offered vegetarian food, as in the previous year.

4) Foundation

Due to the changed conditions in the course of the pandemic, it was clear early on that it would not be possible for international scholarship holders to travel to Alpbach. The foundation therefore offered the nominated scholarship holders the opportunity to participate in the online conference. Fortunately, almost all the "scholarship holders" accepted the offer. In addition, further qualified applicants were invited to the online conference. In order to intensify contact with alumni of the scholarship programme and to bind this group to the Forum, the foundation promoted the conference specifically among this target group and coordinated a call for tenders for the award of sponsored online tickets. In total, more than 2,100 tickets were awarded to scholarship applicants and alumni within a few weeks. The foundation was also involved in the conception of the online conference and was responsible, among other things, for the selection and implementation of the Hopin conference platform, produced training material and videos and trained partners, the FAN/AAN and the EFA team in how to deal with Hopin.

In order to bring partners and sponsors of the foundation into contact with young participants, six interactive "Meet and Greets" took place in the course of the online conference, for example on the topics of "transatlantic relations" and the climate protection goals of the Austrian government. One of the "Meet and Greets" especially brought together African students and the newly founded Africa Alpbach Network with representatives of the Robert Bosch Foundation. In addition, the foundation organised an online exchange of Chinese and Austrian students together with the OEAD, partner of the China Programme. The students discussed the status quo of international cooperation in the health sector and shared personal experiences regarding the Covid 19 pandemic in their countries. An informal alumni storytelling event gave former scholarship holders the opportunity to share their experiences in Alpbach and the impact the Forum had on their lives with an interested audience. The great interest of the young participants in opportunities for a long-term commitment to the Forum was particularly pleasing. More than 100 interested men and women took part in an information event on club foundations and the Ambassador Programme.

17

In order to support the networks (FAN/AAN) in the expansion and supervision of their community and to give former scholarship holders, who are not part of the two networks the opportunity to "dock", the Foundation prepared a discussion paper on the implementation of an alumni platform and discussed it with the EFAF board. In the next step, talks with the association are planned. The professionalisation of community management is absolutely necessary in order to establish and maintain long-term relationships with the alumni of the scholarship programme and to use the potential of a lively community (multipliers, poll for speakers, international visibility of the Forum etc.).

No applications will be accepted for the Forum's scholarship programme in 2021. Scholarship holders will be selected from the pool of applicants nominated by the jury for the year 2020, while the alumni network, which awards about half of the scholarships, will decide autonomously on scholarship applications.

Forum Alpbach Network The FAN was involved more intensively than ever in the programming of this year's Forum and made a significant contribution to this year's Forum with 70 events (see "The European Forum Alpbach 2020 - Implementation and Programme"). By the end of the submission deadline, the EFA Foundation was able to hold discussions with almost all clubs and Ambassadors about the framework conditions for their programme contributions and encourage the network to participate in the Forum 2020. On the online platform of the Forum, the FAN Board was responsible for the programme design of a self-administered area, the FAN Booths. Here, daily events took place between 23 August and 3 September. The formats included storytelling events, a digital version of the "Food for Thought" (in- depth discussions taking up a topic from the main programme) known from the seminar weeks of previous years, a "Welcome" of the young participants with Foundation Board member Howard Williamson, and numerous other events (see item 7 "Report of the Forum Alpbach Network"). The FAN Committee (FANC) 2019/2020 consisted of representatives of the clubs Burgenland and Styria. The FANC supported the online conference and organised a 24-hour reading of George Orwell's dystopian classic "1984", which was very well received by the audience and participants. There was a change in the membership of the FANC board. Daniel Preisinger has resigned his office until further notice. The position will not be filled again. On 24 October the (digital) autumn conference of the network will take place, including the general assembly of the network. A strategy workshop between FAN and AAN board members is also planned on the sidelines of the meeting.

Africa Alpbach Network (AAN) The Africa Alpbach Network (AAN) was founded in 2019 by a group of committed African scholarship holders. These scholarship holders recognised the gaps in African representation, perception and participation in the Forum and decided to play a more active role in shaping the Forum's agenda while promoting intercontinental dialogue. In just one year, AAN has succeeded in increasing African participation and contributing significantly to the Forum 2020. AAN organised five online panel discussions and two "networking hours" during the EFA online conference and coordinated the participation of over 150 African talents from science, civil society and innovative research sectors.

18

During the two weeks of the Forum, the number of applications for AAN membership increased by 129%. The AAN community is also actively involved in the online alumni platform of the International Alumni Center of the Robert Bosch Stiftung. There are currently 64 AAN members from 28 African countries: Algeria, Angola, Egypt, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Benin, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Eswatini, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Zambia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda.

Survey results: Online participants* EFA 2020 * The evaluation is based on responses from 810 participants in the online conference (out of a total of 4,192). Not all questions were answered by all 810 respondents; multiple answers were possible for selected questions.

Demographic Data 60 percent of the survey participants are 29 years old or younger. 20 percent fall into the 30-39 age group and a further 15 percent are between 40-49 years old. 40 percent of those respondents who provided information about their nationality come from the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) with the large majority, a good 34 percent, from Austria. Participants from Europe and the CEE region account for almost 67 percent in total. Africa and Asia are represented with just over 13 percent each, while the share of participants from North and South America is 2-3 percent each.

5) Report of the Forum Alpbach Network

Just in time for its 75th anniversary the European Forum Alpbach had to reinvent itself. How do you organise a Forum that above all is characterised by intimate formats and personal conversations away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life in a small mountain village in times of a pandemic that requires us to maintain distance from our fellow human beings and reduce physical contact? It's no secret: the European Forum Alpbach 2020 was a great challenge for everyone involved, especially for the many volunteers of the Forum Alpbach Network. Nonetheless, we succeeded in reorganising ourselves in the Spirit of Alpbach and, by joining forces, in establishing new formats and discussion spaces that could further develop the potential of the European Forum Alpbach to involve young, committed people in the discourse on the important issues of our time. We would like to review some of these highlights in the following.

First of all, we would like to mention the great work of the Alpbach Clubs and initiative groups, which have organised local Alpbach Hubs throughout Austria and beyond. These hubs served as entry points for the scholarship holders of this year's Forum and enabled a new generation to become physically part of the European Forum Alpbach 2020. To ensure the continued success of the clubs in initiative groups, it was essential to familiarise new people with their structures and practices within the framework of the Alpbach Hubs, as some of the new scholarship holders will already take on a position on the new club boards, which are sometimes elected annually. The enrichment of the EFA programme through the digital discussions and fireside chats organised by the clubs and initiative groups within the framework of the Hubs should also be emphasised. Of the approximately 200 items on the official EFA programme, 70 were made up of contributions from the Forum Alpbach Network, which attracted a large number of participants thanks to their high quality and exciting guests from all over the world! On behalf of the clubs, we would like to express our sincere thanks for the trust placed in us by the EFA for this major task. This year, the FAN has clearly proven that we can and not only want to be recipients, but above all creators of the contents of the European Forum Alpbach. In line with the great transformation, we are already looking forward to playing a major role in the programme design next year. Furthermore, we would like to bring this year's FAN Committee (for short FANC), composed of members of the Club Alpbach Styria and Club Alpbach Burgenland, to the curtain. By organising the 24- hour reading of "1984", the FANC made a valuable and highly regarded contribution to the framework programme of this year's EFA. Behind the scenes, the members of the FANC also helped on a daily basis to answer questions in the Hop In Chat and to distribute information about events in the form of a daily news feed, which was widely used. We would also like to mention the activities of the FAN Board (FANB). After the COVID-19 pandemic thwarted our plans to hold our bi-annual FAN Conference in Brasov, Romania in April, we quickly changed our schedule and organised the first digital FAN Conference. In the midst of the "high time" of the lockdown, we made plans for the EFA2020 together with the club board members via ZOOM. The focus of our efforts should be a good experience for this year's scholarship holders, who after several months of hard work, countless coordination calls and a lot of patience, found themselves in a varied and diverse offer of programme items and activities. To the fantastic formats of the clubs and

26

initiative groups we should add the supporting programme items that the FANB drafted for the FAN Booth in Hopin after a two-day strategy meeting. These included several "Food For Thought" sessions, which provided a discussion space for the interests and concerns of the Forum participants, several "Storytelling" events, which provided a stage and opportunity for rhetoric practice, especially for "Internationals", fireside chats with complexity scientist Stefan Turner, as well as with Franz Fischler, Caspar Einem and Philippe Narval, and the first digital (and surprisingly well attended) DJ nights. The final event in the FAN Booth was the format "The Stage is Yours", which gave the scholarship holders the opportunity to present their personal projects, initiatives and ideas and was very well received. To support the network, members of the FAN Board also travelled to all Alpbach Hubs in Austria during the time of the Forum and offered live impressions of the hubs and opportunities to get to know each other and network in the FAN Booth.

Despite all adversities and difficult circumstances under which the EFA2020 took place, it has to be emphasised that this year's digital format benefited mainly from international Forum participants. While a certain two-tier society between Austrian and international scholarship holders had prevailed in the past years due to the limited housing situation in Alpbach, this year everyone found the same access conditions. The self-organising force that this has triggered, especially among the "Internationals", is effective far beyond the immediate Forum and manifests itself, for example, in our mobile phones when we have to push hundreds of notifications away every day from the groups created at EFA2020 on WhatsApp. This is an appeal for the continued existence of digital access to the Forum to inspire many more people around the world through the content, discussions and meetings at the European Forum Alpbach.
