MONTHLY NEWSLETTER | BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH | OCTOBER 2018

THE PASTOR’S PEN Church Events John Harper was born on May 29, 1872 and died on April 15, 1-Pastor/Deacon’s Mtg. 6:30pm 1912. Why is he important enough for me to feature in my article? Why is the date of his birth and death so important? Well, he was a 3-Reports & Rec. Due Scottish, Baptist pastor, who died in the disaster on 6-Men’s Breakfast & Workday 7:30am the North Atlantic. And, his story is worth hearing. 7-Weakley 1000 Sunday John Harper was born in a little village in , in 1872. He personally embraced his parents' Christian faith at age 14, and he Church Picnic 5pm-7pm began preaching at 18. He supported himself in early adulthood by doing manual labor in a mill, until Baptist pastor E.A. Carter of 8-WOM Mtg. 6pm Baptist Pioneer Mission in London heard of his preaching and 10-Business Mtg. placed him in ministry work in , Scotland. In 1897, he became the first pastor of the Paisley Road Baptist Church 14-World Hunger Sunday in , Scotland. Under his care, the church quickly grew from Acteens Lunch/Mtg. 25 members to over 500. At the time of the Titanic disaster, Harper was 39. Also, he was a 16-Church-Wide Visitation 6:06pm widower with a six-year-old daughter, Annie Jessie, and pastor of 24-CIA Hayride/Cookout Walworth Road Baptist Church in London. He was traveling on the Titanic with his daughter and sister, Jessie Leitch, to Chicago to 27-Fall Festival 2pm-4pm preach for several weeks at the famous Moody Church, where he had been guest minister the previous fall. It was on this fateful 28-Youth Fellowship Night journey across the ocean, when the unsinkable ship hit 29-Pastor/Deacon’s Mtg. 6:30pm an iceberg on the night of April 14, 1912, and went down in the ocean. His daughter and sister were put on a lifeboat and survived, 31-Reposts & Rec. Due but Pastor John Harper voluntarily stayed behind and jumped into the water, as the ship began to sink, so that he could preach the Gospel to the people, who were about to die.

cont. pg. 2 HAPPY BIRTHDAY The Pastor’s Pen cont. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY 3-Denise Douglas Some who survived told that Harper preached 9-Jeff & Carla Allen 4-Betty Lowrance the Gospel to the end (especially Acts 16:31), first aboard the sinking ship, and then afterward 12-Russ & Sarah Beth Huffstetler 6-Trevor Harrington to those in the freezing water before dying in it 16-Ronnie & Judy Hollis 7-Sloan Darby himself. He stayed behind to preach the Gospel to those dying people. He willingly died so that 24-Trent & Candace Hailey 11-Tandy Darby he might reach the lost. 26-Leroy & Debbie Leyhue Larry Porter Also, it’s told that Harper took off his own life vest and gave it to another man, because the 16-Merida Garner man was lost. He was not saved. And, Harper 18-Jeff Lannom wanted the man to live long enough to get saved, later on. What a remarkable story of a 19-Ralph (Heavy) Hill Christian man, who loved Jesus, and who truly cared about the souls of others. 20-TJ Miller The story of John Harper aboard the Titanic is 21-Peyton Lannom told in the book, The Titanic's Last Hero , published by Moody Adams. 23-Callie Harrington Dear people, may we have more of a heart and 26-Faye Porter deep desire to win the lost around us! May we 30-Tracy Lesikar be more concerned with winning people to Jesus; enough to love people. No matter what walk of life they come from. No matter how they look. No matter what they’ve done in the past, or haven’t done. No matter what kind of car they drive. No matter how unpopular they may be. No matter if they’re young or old. No matter if they’re good looking or not so good looking. No matter if they dress nice, or don’t dress that great. No matter if they’re educated, or not very smart. May we have the same kind of heart as John Harper, and love people. To win them to Christ! He is Risen, Pastor David
