Arenales 1256, Apartado 14- 371 sitios, con presencia de indels. Los dos géneros de la Familia Orthalicidae por primera vez incluidos en una 0434, Lima-14, Perú. Rehder Research Curator, Division of Mollusks Introduction An outstanding patroness of the arts and sciences in eighteenth- century England was Lady Margaret Cavendish Bentinck, Duchess of Portland, wife of William, Second Duke of Portland. At Bulstrode in Buckinghamshire, magnificent summer residence of the Dukes of Portland, and in her London house in Whitehall, Lady Margaret— widow for the last 23 years of her life— entertained gentlemen in- terested in her extensive collection of natural history and objets d'art. Among these visitors were Sir Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander, pupil of Linnaeus. As her own particular interest was in conchology, she received from both of these men many specimens of shells gathered on Captain Cook's voyages. Apparently Solander spent considerable time working on the conchological collection, for his manuscript on descriptions of new shells was based largely on the "Portland Museum." When Lady Margaret died in 1785, her "Museum" was sold at auction. The task of preparing the collection for sale and compiling the sales catalogue fell to the Reverend John Lightfoot (1735-1788). For many years librarian and chaplain to the Duchess and scientif- 1 2 PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM vol. 121 ically inclined with a special leaning toward botany and conchology, he was well acquainted with the collection. It is not surprising he went to considerable trouble to give names and figure references to so many of the mollusks and other invertebrates that he listed. -

Mr Tom Iredale (cited in Iredale, 1939) ii Abstract Native land snails are important to ecosystems given their role in the decomposition process through herbivorous feeding of primarily decaying plant matter; calcium recycling and soil nitrification, and as a food source for larger predators. They also serve as a valuable bio-indicator group, especially in Western Australia where they are critical to Environmental Impact Assessments surveys. One conspicuous genus of native land snail found in Western Australia is Bothriembryon Pilsbry, 1894, a Gondwanan group endemic to the southern half of Australia and most diverse in the south-west of Western Australia. -

Daly and Mary Morgan-Richards Wildlife & Ecology, School of Agriculture & Environment, College of Sciences, Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand ABSTRACT KEYWORDS Placostylinae are a sub-family of terrestrial land snails endemic to the southwest Pacific. Some Histone genes; genetic species are harvested for food, and others are critically endangered. Here we assemble and resources; mitochondrial characterise complete mitochondrial genomes, as well as three nuclear markers (partial 45S genome; phylogenetics; ribosomal cassettes and the histone genes H3 and H4) of five snail species from three Placostylus; ribosomal cassette geographical regions (New Zealand, New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands). Mitogenomes of Placostylinae snails ranged between 14,544 bp and 14,711 bp, with minor variation in the position of tRNA tyrosine (Y) and tRNA tryptophane (W). The 45S ribosomal cassette contained intra-genomic nucleotide variation in ITS2. Cassettes containing histone genes H3 and H4 and their non-transcribed spacer region were assembled for three species, with the two genes coded in the same direction. Phylogenetic analysis on this large dataset (mitochondrial genome + nuclear markers) supported geographical clustering of species but could not confidently infer monophyly of the four Placostylus species with respect to Eumecostylus cleryi. Analysis based on shorter cytochrome c oxidase sequences with a wider taxon sampling found species representing the genera Eumecostylus and Placocharis were nested within the phylogenetic diversity of Placostylus. -

Amphidromus (Syndromus) rottiensis new species is diagnosable using shell morphology and geographically close congeners of the subgenus Syndromus, namely A. (S.) contrarius Müller, 1774 and A. (S.) poecilochrous Fulton, 1896 are used for comparison. The new species being described here appears distinct enough to justify a specific status, and suggests an ancestral affiliation closest to A. (S.) contrarius and A. (S.) poecilochrous. This is the first record from Australia of this South-east Asian to Timor genus of arboreal snails. Dissections of the genotype, Amphidromus perversus (Linne, 1758) from Bali and A. poeci/ochrousjaecke/i Laidlaw, 1954, from Flores, Indonesia, provide comparative data on genital and radular structures of A. cognatus. [email protected] ABSTRACT Placostylus is a genus of large terrestrial pulmonate snails distributed in the western Pacific, with endemic species in New Zealand, Solomon Islands, Fiji, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and Lord Howe Island. In New Caledonia, as elsewhere, the taxonomy of Placostylus has been poorly resolved with more than 100 species being described in the 1900’s. Recent revisions have indicated that despite considerable variance in shell morphology among populations, the New Caledonian fauna consists of far fewer species (< 10). All are threatened to a greater or lesser extent by habitat loss and predation by introduced mammals and humans. Two species in particular remain important food sources for local people, P. fibratusand P. porphyrostomus, and these are the subject of intense research focussed at conserving the taxa and maintaining a traditional food source via culturing and protection. Even within these two taxa substantial morphological variation exists among populations. We used mitochondrial DNA sequence to survey diversity and phylogeny within these two species across their geographic range, and to elucidate their relationship to other Placostylus in New Caledonia and beyond. We find evidence of three clades among these two species with P. porphyrostomus being paraphyletic with respect to P. -

ECOLOGY AND POPULATION TRENDS IN NEW CALEDONIAN PLACOSTYLUS SNAILS (MOLLUSCA: GASTROPODA: BULIMULIDAE) A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Zoology at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand Placostylus fibratus Placostylus porphyrostomus Fabrice Brescia 2011 Abstract This study focuses on two endemic New Caledonian land snails: Placostylus fibratus and Placostylus porphyrostomus (known locally as bulimes) which are in decline and listed as vulnerable by the IUCN. On the Isle of Pines, both species are highly-valued commercially and traditionally harvested species suffering from exploitation for human consumption. In the dry forests of the New Caledonian mainland, P. porphyrostomus, especially, is threatened due to habitat degradation and loss, and rodent predation. Prior to this study, the life histories, impact of human harvest, and population trends remained largely unknown for the New Caledonian Placostylus species and restoration trials for their conservation had not been undertaken. Addressing these deficiencies forms the foundation for the thesis, and the findings are used to formulate recommendations for management and conservation. On Isle of Pines, the extent and densities of P. fibratus are greater than the scattered and isolated populations of P. porphyrostomus found on the island and in the dry forests of the Mainland.
