Last year, our April newsletter was covered in “ postponed” and “cancelled” banners; Chef’s Ta- ble tastings were put on hold, group events called off and learning lectures rescheduled. Little was known about Covid-19 and it’s eventual, life altering impact. And here we are, one year later.

The sad reality is that the virus is still with us. Anniversaries mark time. They establish a before and after. The past year witnessed a stressed healthcare system and frontline re- sponders, massive loss of lives, mental health conversations, jobs disappearing, local busi- ness closing, the exposure of health care in- equities– all weighty issues that played out on the national stage.

Some things did go right. Scientists were able to create a vaccine at record speed– they were able to accomplish in months, what usually takes years. Science also proved the most efficient way at controlling the spread and saving lives is by wearing a mask, washing hands and staying 6 feet apart. Easy to do, yet polarizing for the nation.

However, now we are dealing with mutations and global variants that inspire more questions and uncertainty. At print time, 13 months into the pandemic, all numbers seem to be trending in the right way– less people are getting sick and less people are dying. That is the good news we need.

Our lives have changed. We have all lost something; friends, finances, social interactions, gatherings, sporting events- eve- rything we took as ‘normal’. Now, masks are worn more fre- quently, hand sanitizer is more common and vaccinations are finally getting to their destinations.

Celebrating anniversaries is one of the privileges of getting older. Another is living the lessons learned through life experience. The biggest blessing? To share that knowledge with others and to keep us from repeating the past. 2020 is a year we won’t forget, de- hat happened when fined by a pandemic that took over our daily the world changed? lives. From dining to taking on isolation, W Brandywine Valley Active Aging is ever evolving. Here’s a glimpse of our last year We got busy. from March 13th, 2020 - Feb.28th, 2021.
