Strauch’s (1978) compatibility analysisof relationshipsamong the shorebirds (Charadriifonnes) was the first study to examine the full range of charadriifonn taxa in a reproducibleway. SubsequentlyMickevich and Parenti (1980) leveled seriouscharges against Strauch’s characters,method of phylogenetic inference, and results. To account for these charges,Strauch ’s characterswere re-examined and recoded, and parsimony analyseswere performed on the revised matrix. A parsimony analysison 74 taxa from the revised matrix yielded 855 shortesttrees, each length = 286 and consistencyindex = 0.385. In each shortest tree there were two major lineages,a lineageof sandpiper-likebirds and a lineageof plover- like birds; the two formed a monophyletic group, with the auks (Alcidae) being that group’s sister taxon. The shortest trees were then compared with other estimates of shorebird re- lationships, comparison suggestingthat the chargesagainst Strauch’s results may have re- sulted from the Mickevich and Parenti decisions to exclude much of Strauch’s character evidence. Ageing was done by sagittal otoliths for a sample of 675 ranged from 9.2 to 25.9 cm in total length (TL) with mean of 17.4±2.95 cm. The sex ratio was skewed in favors of females (1.6:1), which tended to high in number and bigger in size than males. The maximum investigated age of females was 4 years and that of males was 3 years. -

Society for Research on Amphibians and Reptiles in New Zealand (SRARNZ) presents Reptiles and Amphibians of Otago Otago is a large (31,251 km2) and lightly populated region of the southern South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand, stretching from the eastern coastline west to the Southern Alps. The earliest humans, of East Polynesian origin, arrived about 700 years ago. The largest settlement today is the coastal city of Dunedin (pop. >127,000), which grew from a Scottish influx in the 1800s. The Otago Regional Council administers the region, and tribal authority (mana whenua) rests with the iwi of Ngāi Tahu. Climates in the Otago region (roughly 45°– leiopelmatid frogs survive elsewhere in 47°S) range from changeable, cool- New Zealand. Observations during several years of fieldwork in northeastern Australia indicate that the assemblage of large (≥100 mm) piscivorous fishes within shallow tropical estuarine nurseries may have been considerably underestimated by previous sampling efforts. This study utilised visual surveys of shallow sandy shorelines in the lower reaches of estuaries to estimate the abundance of large piscivores. Flathead (Platycephalus spp., Platycephalidae) were the only large piscivores sighted within transects. A total of 296 flathead between 100 and 600 mm TL were observed in waters between 0.02 and 0.62 m deep. The density of flathead observed during the present study (0.04 ind. m–2) equated to 1 piscivore ≥100 mm TL for every 10.5 m of shoreline surveyed, and far exceeds density estimates for large piscivores in shallow estuarine habitats elsewhere in the world. Furthermore, the estimated biomass of flathead (11.56 g m–2) was equivalent to comparable biomass estimates of entire fish assemblages from shal- low estuarine habitats in other parts of the world. The densities and depth distribution of these large piscivores suggests that shallow water nurseries may not provide small fishes with the level of refuge from predation previously assumed. -

NOTICE: DETAILS: A recent Marine Incident has occurred at McLoughlins Beach ocean access entrance highlighting the risks involved for vessel operators attempting to make passage through and across ocean entrance sand bars. Gippsland Ports is the Local Port Manager for 5 Local Ports; Each of the following ports is a recognised Bar Port. • Port of Corner Inlet and Port Albert • Port of Gippsland Lakes • Port of Anderson Inlet • Port of Snowy River (Marlo) • Port of Mallacoota Inlet. Only the Ports of Corner Inlet, Port Albert and the Gippsland Lakes (Lakes Entrance Bar) have recognised aids to navigation to guide the Mariner through and across their respective ocean entrance sand bars. The entrances to these ports remain open at all times, however sound local knowledge and favorable environmental conditions are required to make a safe passage. The Port of Snowy River (Marlo), Port of Mallacoota Inlet and Port of Anderson Inlet are dynamic in nature with ever changing channel configuration and depths. Ocean access can be closed off at Marlo and Mallacoota during times of drought. There are no aids to navigation to guide the mariner through and across their respective ocean entrance sand bars. Lake Tyers - Sydenham Inlet and Tamboon Inlet, all remain closed until sufficient back up of water creates an ocean access entrance. -

Cairns2 1New South Wales Department of Primary Industries, Fisheries Conservation Technology Unit, PO Box J321, Coffs Harbour, New South Wales 2450, Australia 2Zoology, School of Environmental and Rural Sciences, University of New England, Armidale, New South Wales 2351, Australia ABSTRACT: We completed 2 experiments to quantify the mortality and physical damage (fin, blood and scale loss) of angled dusky flathead Platycephalus fuscus during a live weigh-in tournament (Expt 1) and after being immediately released by anglers (Expt 2). In each experiment, 84 and 79 angled P. fuscus were placed into up to 6 replicate tanks and, along with appropriate numbers of con- trols, monitored for mortalities over 5 d. Five and 7 of the angled fish died within 12 h, providing mor- talities of 3.6 and 8.9% in Expts 1 and 2, respectively. One control fish died, which was attributed to an incorrectly inserted tag. None of the continuous or categorical variables collected during angling and subsequent release, or the experimental design, could explain the few observed mortalities to treatment fish. However, knotted large-mesh landing nets caused significantly greater fin damage than knotless fine-mesh designs in both experiments (p < 0.05). Furthermore, although water quality had no measured impact on the confined fish, the samples taken from anglers’ live wells (mostly for Expt 1) were significantly poorer than the environment from which the fish were caught (p < 0.05). -

Where wildlife are disturbance prone, active management is required to promote coexistence between beach-goers and endangered wildlife. Coexistence relies on people adopting wildlife-sensitive behaviours. This study examines factors, which influence people’s awareness and perceptions of threatened species management in southern Australia, using Hooded Plover Thinornis rubricollis management as a model. The inconvenience experienced by beach goers in regard to plover management was low. Awareness and support for plover conservation were high. Frequency of beach use, whether a person was a dog walker, and awareness of the species and its plight, influenced perceptions. Abstract: We surveyed 579 recreationists regarding management of the threatened, beach-dwelling Hooded Plover Thinornis rubricollis.
