Deposits of all reporting institutions amounted to $2, 713,- 397,000, of which $1,190,094,000 were demand and $1,523,- 303,000 time deposits, an increase of $72,814,000. Total deposits in the 130 commercial institutions showed $2,208,599,000, an increase of . 7 % , while the de posits in the 24 mutual savings banks amounted to $504, 798,- 000, an increase of 12.6 % . Time deposits of individuals, partnerships, and corporations, reported by all institutions increased 5.2 %, while the total demand deposits of individ uals, partnerships, and corporations, increased 3 .4 %. Of the 130 commercial banks with $2,208,599,000 in de posits, 78 with deposits of $1,677,695,000, or 76%, were members of the Federal Reserve System, leaving deposits of $530,904,000, or 24%, held by the 52 nonmembers. All except one of the institutions accepting deposits were members of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Government securities made up 51. 9 % of the total assets as compared with 5 6. 7 % a year ago, while cash represented 14.1 % of the total as against 13. 7 % . These two items, therefore, accounted for 66 % of the total assets. Loans and discounts plus mortgage loans, in the commercial banks, increased 22.4 % during the year and represented 22.1 % of their assets. Mortgage loans and other loans in the savings banks increased 22 % and comprised 19.9 % of their assets. The total of the banking plants and real estate owned in the commercial banks, other than sold under agreement, showed a ratio of 18.5 % of the total capital accounts as com pared with 19 % in December 1946. The comparable ratio for the mutual savings banks showed 7.4 % of surplus and reserves as against 8.4 % a year ago. The total capital accounts of the commercial banks repre sented 7 % of their total deposits as compared with 6.8 % a year ago. The comparable ratio for the mutual savings banks showed 12.2% as compared with 12.1 %. During the year 1947 the single stock savings bank of the state converted to a trust company and the two specially chartered savings associations supervised converted to savings banks. The figures of the latter two associations are re flected in the savings bank totals for the first time and hence serve to augment slightly the increases shown in the compara tive figures and ratios.
