Some timid, rare Sci-Fi buds spring in the, unofficially second half, of the tour de force introduction into the settings of the Discworld, including multi dimensions, human sacrifice, possession, lynch mobs, and the apocalypse. I do tend to ask myself how it would have been if Pratchett would have dealt with more sci-fi concepts instead of focusing on fantasy and society, and the whole multi dimension idea gives a tiny glimpse at what could have been. Forget it. There have been many variations of the unwilling, tentative, comedic hero, but someone like Rincewind has to be topped, as Pratchett is able to awake sympathy for a disagreeable, incompetent, and manipulative wanna be fringe pop wizard. World domination, ultimate power, and invincibility are as ridiculous as popular, but Pratchett gives the setting a new special taste by satirizing it with the allegedly mundane hurdles towards entity status that hide the key to the destruction of the The Light Fantastic. Today there are more fast cuts between perspectives, always cliffhangery, well plotted, suspenseful, retrospectives,… in modern writing that is far less exhausting to read and difficult to follow than this classic series, one of the reasons some might find Pratchett hard to read. The idea of the dissected motifs rocks, highlighting the main real world inspirational elements of fiction and satire is something usually done with so called higher literature, but a much more interesting field in readable literature, as it offers the joy of reading, subtle criticism, The Light Fantastic feeling smart all together. The Light Fantastic years after Terry Pratchett published The Color of Magicthe first Discworld book, he published the second, The Light Fantastic, having decided convincingly that this was a worthwhile project. Though the action in The Light Fantastic takes over immediately following the events in the first book, Rincewind has fallen off of the edge of the world, this novel seems to gather momentum from a good but somewhat shaky start and proceed with a comic authority. Actually, I suppose he The Light Fantastic have written a third, making the obligatory trilogy and then moving on to something else, but Pratchett wraps up his story tidily and leaves the fertile soil of Discworld as a fun idea from which more books can be written. There are over 50 works in publication, and the series is a phenomenon with over 80 million novels sold and in 37 languages. Pratchett himself was knighted in So what is all the fuss about? Our heroes Rincewind and Twoflower go on an adventure to save The Light Fantastic world, or try to, or accidentally The Light Fantastic up in all the right places, or something. The real hero of the novel, and of the series, is Pratchett himself. I don't know how to elaborate on that so I'll just share some of The Light Fantastic favorite moments in Light Fantastic. Snarky social commentary: She is there, down below the mines and sea ooze and fake fossil bones put there by a Creator with nothing better to do than upset archaeologists and give them silly ideas. By fracturing the magical community into two distinct factions, Pratchett’s work positions the witches and wizards of Discworld as ideological oppositions. An in-depth analysis of the wizards and Unseen University traces their associations with the history of the British educational system, male privilege, academic elitism, and tradition, reading their order as indicative of the “norm” and a repressive dominant educational ideology.

Another Disc day dawned, but very gradually, and this is why. When light encounters a strong magical field it loses all sense of urgency. It slows right down. And on the Discworld the magic was embarrassingly strong, which meant that the soft yellow light of dawn flowed over the sleeping landscape like the caress of a gentle lover or, as some would have it, like golden syrup. It paused to fill up valleys. It piled up against mountain ranges. When it reached Cori Celesti, the ten mile spire of grey stone and green ice that marked the hub of the Disc and was the home of its gods, it built up in heaps until it finally crashed in great lazy tsunami as silent as velvet, across the dark landscape beyond. It was a sight to be seen on no other world. Of course, no other world was carried through the starry infinity on the backs of four giant elephants, who were themselves perched on the shell of a giant turtle. His name—or Her name, according to another school of thought— was Great A’Tuin; he—or, as it might be, she—will not take a central role in what follows but it is vital to an understanding of the Disc that he—or she—is there, down below the mines and sea ooze and fake fossil bones put there by a Creator with nothing better to do than upset archeologists and give them silly ideas.

    Terry Pratchett Hogfather A Novel of Discworld® To Everyone Who Hoped It Might Be True Everything starts somewhere, although many physicists disagree. But people have always been dimly aware of the problem with the start of things. They wonder aloud how the snowplow driver gets to work, or how the makers of dictionaries look up the spellings of the words. Yet there is the constant desire to find some point in the twisting, knotting, raveling nets of space-time on which a metaphorical finger can be put to indicate that here, here, is the point where it all began… Something began when the Guild of Assassins enrolled Mister Teatime, who saw things differently from other people, and one of the ways that he saw things differently from other people was in seeing other people as things (later, Lord Downey of the Guild said, “We took pity on him because he’d lost both parents at an early age. I think that, on reflection, we should have wondered a bit more about that”). But it was much earlier even than that when most people forgot that the very oldest stories are, sooner or later, about blood. Later on they took the blood out to make the stories more acceptable to children, or at least to the people who had to read them to children rather than the children themselves (who, on the whole, are quite keen on blood provided it’s being shed by the deserving*), and then wondered where the stories went. And earlier still when something in the darkness of the deepest caves and gloomiest forests thought: what are they, these creatures? I will observe them… And much, much earlier than that, when the Discworld was formed, drifting onward through space atop four elephants on the shell of the giant turtle, Great A’Tuin.
