The Tambo Rambler would like to acknowledge the Gunaikurnai People, the Traditional Owners of the land on which we gather, and pay our respects to their Elders both past and present NEWS FROM AROUND THE TRAPS

Bruthen Fire Brigade has had a busy last few months during what has been a challenging fire season for our community and district, and for us as a Brigade. Since our last article in December the Brigade has attended multiple fires and incidents. These include:

 Motor Vehicle Accident (on New Year’s Day),  Unattended camp fires (which represent a danger to our beautiful township and surrounds),  Grass & scrub fires at Buchan & also Wards Road Tambo Upper caused through lightning,  Smoke sighting (once again lightning strikes),  Strike Team participation to Buchan (W Tree, , Murrindal) (three crew rotations),  Forest fire at Buchan South,  Structure fire on the outskirts of Bruthen, and  Strike Teams to the Dargo complex of fires (six crew rotations).  Crews have also been on standby on high fire danger days, ready to respond to local fires around Bruthen and surrounds.

Smoke Alarms (Source – this is an edited version of an article taken from: http://cfaonline.cfa.vic.gov.au/)

FIRST & FOREMOST – Working Smoke Alarms save lives, it is as simple as that…….there are a number of tips you should consider to maintain an operational smoke alarm.

 Use long-lasting 9V alkaline batteries in your alarm - by doing this you ensure year-round protection.

 Use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to dust around the smoke alarm.

 Install photo-electric smoke alarms. Photo-electric alarms are generally more responsive to fires that begin with a long period of smouldering. Smoke alarms should meet the Australian Standard (look for the AS3786 marking).

 Test smoke alarms once a month. The alarm should produce a loud "beep beepbeepbeep" sound when you press the test button using a broom handle.

 Replace all smoke alarms (both battery powered and 240v hard-wired) after ten years (the year of manufacture is displayed on the alarm). Waiting until the smoke alarm beeps before you change the battery is too late - this indicates that the battery is already flat, and your family is not protected. Change your smoke alarm battery every year. End of daylight savings period is usually a good time to change batteries. Bruthen Licensed Post Office (Est.1893)

Building a Culture for Learning

Bruthen Primary School has been building a culture for social and academic learning in order to create a strong foundation for the challenges that their students face every day at school. At Bruthen Primary School we strive to:

Establish high expectations. Expectations help shape both social and academic achievements a classroom. Students rise to the expectations when teachers and students set them together and regularly discuss the effectiveness of classroom practices that support a culture for learning.

Building Relationships Building relationships is the backbone of positive interactions. This means building relationships between students, between students and teachers and home and school. It is important that that we get to know others on a personal level (interests, likes, dislikes) and academic level (strengths and challenges) and embrace diversity. These help the classroom and school culture to be one of connectedness, collaboration and positivity.

Give students a voice.

It is important for students to feel empowered in the classroom. This means they need to feel comfortable asking questions or engaging in respectful debates. It is important for our students to understanding verbal and nonverbal language so they are mindful of the impact they have on others. We also want our students to take ownership of their learning. Therefore, they need to have a say in what they learn and how they learn, as this process is a stepping-stone to them becoming independent lifelong learners.

Make the classroom a safe place to make mistakes. Our classrooms must be places where our students feel safe to embrace new challenges, take risks and make mistakes so our learning environment encourages students to become more determined, persistent, resilient and curious.

Model how to learn. This includes helping our students to understand their role and responsibilities and the teacher’s role and responsibilities in the learning process. Modelling how to learn also means that our students will see our teachers using the skills, behaviours and attitudes of successful learners as they share and talk about their learning experiences alongside our students. Learning how to learn also means helping our students understand how the brain works and how they can become smarter through effort and learning. (More of this next week when we unpack Growth Mindset)

Give feedback often-Challenging thinking through questioning. Ultimately, we want our students to be assessment capable learners who can reflect and monitor their own learning but first they must learn how. Therefore, it is important that we support our stu- dents to know what to do to be successful (setting goals and understanding success criteria) and what to do when they don’t know what to do. (Having lots of different strategies to try). These capa- bilities are develop through effective feedback that moves learning forward and questioning which challenges students to reflect, react and respond as learners.

Celebrate accomplishments. Learning growth-‘Victories’ for every student may be different, but it is important to recognise them so that students gain more confidence and continue to grow. At Bruthen Primary School, learning is about the journey-the attitudes, skills and behaviours they used that helped them along the journey. We want to celebrate the littlest things because these often have the biggest impact.

Bruthen Arts and Events ...... is very proud to present The New Savages in the Mechanics Hall on Saturday April 13th. The evening will kick off with a BBQ at 6pm. It will be a family -friendly event and it is free entry for kids. Presale tickets are available online for $16 or it’s $20 at the door.

Local act Electric Yeti will be the support for the evening. “Nick Fischer’s latest project Electric Yeti is one man bandness from another dimension. His music is rock, roots and blues in colour, has baritone soul and rock-star electric texture. His lyrics tell stories of life and lust. ...” Nick appeared at Bruthen Blues festival this year and has supported festival faves the Fret Drifters at other venues. Come along and support an intriguing local talent.

The New Savages appeared at this year’s Bruthen Blues Festival on the street stage and at the Blues cafe on the Saturday night. They were very warmly received by the audiences so if you missed out on seeing them then, now is your chance to catch a very high quality original act. “ The New Savages are an electric and original take on the first generation of recorded blues. Lead singer Milan’s striking baritone vocals seem to evoke the spirit of a great poet....” The band has several videos available for viewing on their website if you want to get a preview. For a two-piece, the sound is huge and really defies description so just come along and see them!

The Mechanics Hall in Bruthen is a bit of an underappreciated gem. We are very fortunate to have such a great venue here in town for all sorts of shows and events. We hope that this coming show and the others to follow during the year will draw good crowds and help to keep Bruthen on the map as a place of cultural excellence . Check out the bands on Facebook and “like” Bruthen Presents on Facebook to hear about all of the shows that will be presented this year. See you all there! Bruthen Blues & Arts Festival NEEDS YOU!!! DROUGHT OUTREACH INFORMATION SESSIONS

Drought-affected farmers will be able to access detailed information and immediate assistance at a series of information sessions in East Gippsland shires this week.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said farmers would be able to speak to Federal and State Government agencies, charities, industry groups and mental health providers about their circumstances and the help that is available to them. Information will be available covering the Farm Household Allowance, the Rural Financial Counselling Service and tax assistance measures.

Mr Chester said the information sessions would be attended by the Australian Tax Office, Centrelink, Rural Financial Counselling Service, Landcare, NBN Co, Gippsland Primary Health Network and Lifeline and Victorian Government agencies.

The Salvation Army will also attend to distribute a range of immediate support from the Federal Government’s $30 million Drought Community Support Initiative (the DCSI), which provides practical assistance up to $3,000 (up to $2,000 cash and $1,000 in vouchers) to eligible farmers, farm workers and farm suppliers/contractors who are facing hardship due to the drought and live or work in East Gippsland and Wellington shires.

The responsibility lies with the individual groups to provide updates when their schedules change. If in doubt, please contact the relevant organisations for confirmation of Great start to the season

The first games for the season were played on 31st March in horrible conditions at Omeo. The netball was cancelled due to the rain and wind that also made life more difficult for the footballers, umpires and officials. The junior footy side had an excellent first game of the season defeating their opponents by a large margin. Congratulations to all of the players against a traditionally strong juniors side. Well done to juniors coach Mick Purcell for the excellent preparation during pre-season training. The senior side also had a convincing win - not an easy task taking on Omeo at home in such unpleasant conditions! Congratulations to all of the players and coach Todd Cook who has taken on the coaching role for the first time this year. Thanks to all of the volunteers that turned up to carry out the wide range of tasks involved on game days. The Club relies on the dedication of the volunteers and we could always do with more help in a range of tasks. If you are interested in helping out in any capacity please contact Adam Lonnie—who has taken over as club president this year. You can also contact the club through the Facebook page. The next two rounds are home games—against Buchan on the 6th April and against Swan Reach on the 13th April. It would be great to see as many Bruthen supporters there as possible to encourage all of our teams. As always we need extra people on the ground for home games to ensure that the day runs smoothly. Our legendary Thursday dinner nights following the training session will be commencing soon—look out for details about this and other upcoming social events in the planning for later in the season. We hope to see you all at the game .....Go The Doggies!!!!

Wow what a fabulous day the Family Fun Day was, thank you to everyone that pitched in and helped and thanks to everyone that came and joined in the fun. It was such a great turnout. We had lots of different activities on offer and heaps of smiles from big kids, little kids and adults alike. Loads of great photos on the Facebook page if you’re interested. The funniest part of the day was without a doubt the Blindfolded Cake Decorating Competition, I have never laughed so much in my life. We saw some fantastic scarecrows being created and the decorated pots made our very own rainbow of colour. I loved seeing all the crazy, colourful hair dos and gorgeous painted faces walking around, and the funny photo booth was a huge hit. But I think the jumping castles and donkeys were the big winner on the day. Tammy Nicholas Coordinator
