From the Editor

Welcome to the January Edition, and thank you to Roger Gough and Rebecca Dent for their Mini Biographies.

As regards club member’s participation in events is concerned, 2019 has started where 2018 left off, with club members taking part in no less than 30 events in the first 3 weeks of the year. In 2018, I reported on 466 events which was an increase of 67 on 2017!

However, the number competing at cross country has slightly declined, so hopefully more members might think about competing. The club competes in two leagues, which offer a choice of a traditional pattern of races tailored to age groups and gender on ‘lap’ courses at the North and South Durham (NYSD) League, or a Senior Over-17 only East Yorkshire League, which consists of men and women competed together over typical 6-mile distances on mostly hilly courses. Whilst the standard at the and South Durham League is higher than the East Yorkshire League, this mostly affects the sharp end of races, and anyone who has competed in an East Yorkshire League need not worry about being left behind. The senior races include men Over-80 and Women Over-75. Over-65 Men have an option of running in the separate women’s race which is over the traditional distance of around 6 kilometres which would suit newcomers moving up from 5 kilometre Parkruns. With just one more NYSD fixture left which is at Richmond, and not usually well attended, this is something to consider for next season

For this season, a good attendance at the two remaining East Yorkshire League would be most welcome, as both the men’s and women’s teams are doing very well, with the women’s team in 2nd overall of now 10 teams, and the men’s team who had led overall is now in 3rd overall after Sledmere, but which is much better than 6th of 8 teams last season!

I hope you will find something of interest in the regular features, and as always please let me know if you note any errors or omissions.

Committee Meeting Minutes. 10 January 2019 at Scarborough Rugby Club

Present: David Field, Harry Forkin, Simon Valente, Mick Thompson, Chris Wade

Apologies for absence: Melanie Padgham, Ralph Broadley, Shaun Tymon, Tony Tomaszewicz

Correspondence: Nominations have been received for the vacant trustees and treasurer post.

A response from one member who has raised concerns about the club’s processes has been promised and is awaited.

The club, through Mick Thompson, has been in communication with the parent of a junior member regarding his wish for the member not to be identified or receive publicity via reports of competitive events. Mick has explained the reasons for including her name, but the wish for no publicity in future will be respected, insofar as the club can control this.

Finance report: No report was tabled as Tony Tomaszewicz, treasurer, was absent.

Social events: The club’s annual presentation evening will take place at the Alexandra bowls centre on April 5th, 2019. The club will pay the catering costs.

The social event at the Escape Rooms had been successful and a follow-up event will be considered . Junior Section Issues: Attendance at Sharon Houghton’s sessions has now increased.

It has become necessary for Chris Wade to send a letter to parents and carers of juniors attending sessions advising of expected standards of behaviour in view of recent instances of unruly and potentially unsafe activity by a small number of juniors.

Special General Meeting: This is going ahead on January 31st, 2019, to elect new trustees and a treasurer. Nominations, with seconders, have been received for all vacant posts.

Any Other Business: The family of Alan Neuff have stated they are happy for a club award to be renamed in his memory.

It was felt that the awarding of school’s trophies in relation to the McCains event should be reconsidered, but this is a matter for the 10k/fun run committee to consider.

The club will pay the costs relating to participation in the Three Peaks race, which have been paid up front by Dave Parke and Danny Walls, so that they will not be out of pocket.

It was felt that increased control of posts and announcements on the club’s Facebook page would be desirable to prevent potentially inappropriate posts. Consideration will be given to using a moderator system and to highlight the club’s Facebook rules.

Next Committee Meeting: The next committee meeting of Scarborough Athletic Club will be held on February 7th, 2019.

Mini Biographies

Roger Gough

My running years; I can't real claim to have ever been a runner. At secondary school I wasn't any good at sports and being painfully shy didn't help. My only prowess was I could box a little, and I was one of the best cross-country runners in my year. In my early twenty’s I took part in weekly handicap run organised by work colleagues. I also trained with a friend, and on my own. My longest run, apart from a nineteen miles training run, was a very hilly Cannock Chase (where I lived) half marathon, which I was on pace to complete in under one hour thirty pace but blew up in the last mile and a half. When I moved to Scarborough I carried on solo running, but never seriously, until I was about forty. I started running again at the ripe old age of 67.

Best performances; A hilly Dudley 10 mile, which I completed in sixty five minutes.

Winning a club handicap.

A park run PB of 34:12.

Favourite race; Parkruns, closely followed by club handicaps and 10k's.

Favourite female athlete; Paula Radcliffe,

Favourite male athlete; Sir Mohamed "Mo" Muktar Jama Farah, CBE, OLY. No surprise there.

Targets; To complete a 10k in under one hour fifteen minutes.

To complete all of the summer club handicap runs.

To complete 50 park runs (nearly there).

Ambitions; To still be running when I am eighty.

Funniest moments; Face planting, not once but twice. First time during the Ravenscar handicap. The second time when doing a training run when on holiday. It wasn't funny at the time, but the attention I got, at the end of the Ravenscar run, by several fellow runners (mostly female), was very enjoyable.

Rebecca Dent

Years as a runner; I started Scarborough AC as a junior in Chris Wade's athletic sessions, but I started properly running in the senior running groups the night I got my GCSE results in July 2016.

Best performance; My highlight of running so far would be crossing the finish line of my first Manchester Marathon last year in sub 4 hours, (beating my mum's PB first time too).

Favourite race; I mainly enjoy most races, but I'm starting to really get into my off-road and fell runs. However, my favourite race so far would be the 26-mile Smuggler's Trod I completed with Hiede last year. Although deciding only a week before that I would take part in this, it was a great achievement, and the pie and peas at the end where definitely worth the trek through the woods.

Favourite female athlete; I don't really follow many famous athletes, but Becky Briggs would be one to follow.

Favourite male athlete; Again, I'm not sure on many male athletes.

Targets; Since I've beaten most of mum's PBs (sorry mum), I would really like to achieve my marathon 'Good For Age' time of 3:45:00, complete The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge and to finally beat Chris Bourne in a road race.

Ambitions; To be able to run for as long as possible. People like Sue Haslam and Neil Scruton are a real inspiration and I would love to be able to be running at their ability when I am at their age (or even now if possible!)

Funniest moment; Although not the funniest moment for myself, the first time I joined the senior track sessions with Chris Wade on that Tuesday night, I ran two laps of the 400m track attempting to keep up with the more experienced athletes which resulting in me going home in tears because it was too hard. Just shows how far I have really come in this past two- and a-bit years.
