Five species of the genus Metapenaeopsis occur in the western Atlantic, three of which are described as new. A key for their separation, synonymies, disposition of the types, diagnoses, detailed descriptions, and illustrations are presented for each species, and their affinities are discussed. Their geographic and bathymetric ranges together with data on habits and habiuts are also included. The morphology and development of the peculiar asymmetrical petasma of Metapenaeopsis have been investigated, and correlations made with previous significant works. As indicated in the list of material examined, my conclusions are based on a study of the Penaeopsis collected during the voyage of the Challenger, 1873-76 and identified by Bate, including the types of his species, "Penaeus rectacutus" and "P. serratus." Also examined were 6 specimens described by de Man, and the relatively large collection of Penaeopsis taken by the U.S. steamer Albatross during the Philippine Expedition, 1907-1909, which includes representatives of 3 of the 4 species found in the Indo-West Pacific. The method of measuring specimens and the terminology used below are described by Perez Farfante (1969). The scales accompanying the illustrations are in millimeters. The materials used are in the collections of the British Museum (Natural History) (BMNH), National Museum of Natural History (USNM), and the Zoological Museum, Amsterdam (ZMA). Morehead City, North Carolina ABSTRACT This paper reviews the estuarine portion of the life histories of Penaell.l' setiferus, P. duorarlll1l and P. aztecus in North Carolina. After larval migrations from spawning places at sea, the young enter estuaries as benthonic post-larvae. P. setiferus is judged to grow 36 mm, P. duorarlllll 52 mm, and P. azteclls 46 mm per month in brackish nursery areas during the warmer months. Juveniles gradually move toward the sea as they approach mature sizes. P. aztecus recruitment is greatest in May. The earliest recruits reach commercial size by July. No juveniles and few adults overwinter in N.C. P. duorarum recruitment extends from June to October. The earliest recruits reach commercial size in autumn, but the remainder overwinter and attain commercial size in spring. Mature adults occur in the littoral zone prior to the recruitment period. P. setiferlls recruitment occurs chiefly in June. The young attain commercial size by late summer. A sparse population of adults overwinters in the littoral zone. These are sexually mature in spring. A number of ecological factors in the nursery areas are discussed. Thc role of interspecific competition for nursery areas is considered. To make clear the economic importance of the genus, one only has to mention that the value of the catch of Penaeus setiferus (L.) along the South Atlantic and Gulf coast of the United States of America, in 1943 alone, amounted to 15 million dollars (cf. ANONYMUS, 1945, p. 91). In the Mediterranean it is Penaeus kerathurus (Forssk.) (the Langostino of the Spanish and Caramote of the French) which is fished and sold for food, while in E. Australia Penaeus plebejus Hess and Penaeus esculentus Haswell are caught in huge quantities. In the rest of the indo-westpacific region too the prawns of the genus Penaeus play an important role in the commercial fisheries. At present in India and Indonesia much attention is given to the problem of intensifying the prawn fisheries and developing the prawn industries. These economic studies of the prawns are greatly complicated by the fact that the nomenclature of two of the indo-westpacific species is hopelessly confused.

Some years later studies of the metamorphosis of penaeid shrimps in the Gulf of Mexico were made (Pearson 1939, Heegaard 1953, Dobkin 1961, Cook and Murphy 1965, and Renfro and Cook 1963). The present paper treats the larvae taken in Mississippi and brings together the descriptions of the larvae scattered in the literature. The salient features of various stages of different species of the six genera studied are pointed out with the aid of drawings to facilitate easier iden- tification. Besides the references cited above, the works of Heldt (1938), Gurney (1924, 1942), Heegaard (1966) and Cook (1966) have been consulted for this presentation.
