The school prepares students for Work by Samuel Perez from Gnomon’s careers in the video game and visual Best of Term effects industries. The more than 70 pieces in the exhibit are either stills or sculptures. Gnomon founder Alex Alvarez relays that seeing animations as stills is a beautiful art form. “It’s nice to see them in a more traditional image,” he continues. The pieces vary from projects for class to personal endeavors; however, there is a whimsical element present in all of them. Jorik Dozy, a recent Gnomon graduate, has four landscape stills on display. One of his pieces, We Turned Into Old Souls, is a tribute to The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The picturesque landscape shows the view of a sunset as thick clouds roll overhead. Two people can be seen in the foreground gazing at the scene in a mountain range. “I love landscapes,” Dozy says. “What appeals to me the most about them is you need to know everything. You’re making the whole shot, not just one part of it.” Artist Michael Cacciamani created The 72 Suicide (concept by Brian Despain). It won this week she WORKED on her flamenco moves, Gnomon’s Spring 2010 Best of Term award for Hard Surface Modeling. Peter Straub had a sculpture on display that he created as a project for a class at Gnomon. As a part of the project, students in the class had to draw a concept from a hat, and Straub pulled out “hob goblin,” so he decided to create a sculpture in tribute to The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Straub spent the 10-week course creating the sculpture. He explains the process as beginning with a broad concept and adding depth to the character in order to design accordingly. The exhibit will be on display through mid-November and is open to the public free of charge between the hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every weekday. The Gnomon School plans to have another student exhibit in the future. The pieces for this exhibit were chosen based on submitted pieces from students and recent graduates. According to Alvarez, there is an interesting mix of work displayed from younger students in their first or second term. Alvarez describes the students at Gnomon as “a superstar audience to teach.” Many of the students are “young artists trying to get into the industry, as well as more experienced artists coming in to hone in their skills.” Over the past 13 years, Gnomon has evolved to meet the demands of an ever-changing entertainment industry. The graduates of Gnomon continue on to work at leading companies in the entertainment and video game industries. The school boasts a 90 percent placement rate among the 300-350 students enrolled per term. Dozy now works for Industrial Light & Magic in San Francisco as a digital matte painter. Cacciamani is moving to in two weeks to work for Pixar Canada as a lighting apprentice. Straub works for Gentle Giant Studios in Burbank as a character modeler. what are you doing this week? When Cbs’ smash comedy “Rules of Engagement” hit the air in 2007, no one could have foreseen the success it would be for the network. The sitcom depicts the day-to-day goings on of a group of friends: Audrey and Jeff (Megyn Price and Patrick Warburton, respectively) are the seasoned married couple; Adam (Oliver Hudson) and Jennifer (Bianca Kajlich) are young, sweet and engaged to be married; Russell (David Spade) is the straight, single guy whose sexual antics keep everyone on their toes. For fans of the show, “Rules” has provided a number of funny changes to its composition. Characters have changed – some becoming sharper (as in the case of Audrey); others have become dimmer (as in the case of Adam). But all are just as funny as ever. This includes relative newcomer to roster, Adhir Kalyan. As Russell’s straight edge assistant, Timmy, he adds balance and another arc to the mix. Warburton admires his co-stars but stands in special admiration of Spade. “He’s one of the smartest, off-the-cuff comics I’ve ever met,” says the actor. As for Spade, he is looking forward to the many changes in store for everyone, especially Audrey and Jeff. “I’m actually wondering if Patrick and Megyn will have a baby,” he says. Spade also kicks around the idea of whether or not his character will finally settle down and domesticate the way the others have. “I’m wondering how long I could suffer through,” he says, punctuated with a sarcastic chuckle. Sara Bareilles puts Kaleidoscope Heart “In my wildest dreams I could not have on display at the Orpheum Sept. 28. imagined it was going to wind up as the No. 1 record. I really didn’t. I am totally shocked by that,” tells Bareilles. “We haven’t done a ton of high visibility promotion, and I have one song on the radio. I think it’s a testament to how amazing my fans are. To have those kinds of fans that are out there waiting and sharing it with their friends, it’s just been awesome.” A second album notoriously serves as the most nerve-wracking for many artists; even the unconventional Bareilles was swept away by anxiety. “The theme for me in this record is all about embracing change and embracing fear actually. I was really nervous to share music again and worried about people’s expectations,” admits Bareilles, who asked herself, “Was I going to be able to live up to what came before?” “I think the trick is to divorce yourself as much as possible from those sets of expectations and just try to be present,” she reveals. “Remember that any record is just a snapshot of where you are at any given time.” While often times the harshest critic truly is yourself, Bareilles has encountered harsher. After reading unflattering reviews of her friends’ records that had been released, Bareilles penned “Machine Gun,” a powerful pop tune aimed at nasty critics. “The difficulty with art is when you’re sharing your artistry with the world, it’s still a very vulnerable place to be,” tells Bareilles. “I just find it really frustrating sometimes that critics seem to have no issue with ripping someone apart top to bottom. Sometimes it’s a well educated opinion, and sometimes it’s just people being nasty.” Putting things into perspective, Bareilles comments, “Any way you slice it, it’s just one person’s opinion.” The process of narrowing down the perfect song selection for Kaleidoscope Heart wasn’t easy for Bareilles and producer Neal Avron. “This is the first time I’ve had more than enough material. We recorded 18 songs knowing that we were only going to get 12 or 13 on the record. We just kind of picked the songs that made the most sense with each other and really the songs that came to life in the recording process,” says Bareilles. “It was toward the end of recording I felt like, ‘OK, this is the record.’” While a few of the remaining songs have ended up as exclusive tracks for vendors like Walmart and Target, only time will tell the fate of the unused material. Equally as exciting as the album’s success is this week’s kickoff of the Kaleidoscope Heart tour. “I’m working on something with some old friends to try to have them come out and sing with me, but I don’t know if that’s going to happen,” reveals Bareilles about her upcoming L.A. show. As her fan base grows and the venues become larger, Bareilles strives to keep an intimacy with her fans. The L.A. stop, the Orpheum, seats about 1,200, but Bareilles is determined to still connect with the audience. “That’s my favorite part of being on stage is having that very intimate exchange with the audience,” shares Bareilles. “We’ve put a lot of work into making this tour special and to make this fan experience something that they will remember.” Though Bareilles enjoyed her time in the studio, she thinks it’s time to hit the road. “I’m really ready,” she says. “I’ve been waiting for the tour. I’m really excited to share this music and to pour my energy into the live experience now.” Bareilles extends special gratitude to Campus Circle readers. “I’ve been so overwhelmed by the support of people of that age range. I just want to say thank you to the fans that are out there buying the music,” says Bareilles. “I’m really grateful.”

I met a wonderful girl who is everything I’ve always wanted, but there’s a catch ... she is in a two-year relationship with someone else. How can I win her heart in an ethical and right way? I feel I’ve met my soul mate too late. —Martin They say all is fair in love and war, so since she’s not married and you still have a chance, I say go for it. First, I want you to do some soul searching and ask yourself if you only want her just because she’s not available. If you are positive that’s not the case, the next step is to think of yourself as a product. When a company wants to steal customers from its main competitor, it provides what the other brand isn’t providing. So, your mission is to figure out what she wants that her guy isn’t giving her. After two years, people tend to get lazy and not put as much effort into a relationship. They start to take the other person for granted. If he doesn’t want to go to the movies, you can volunteer to take her. If she needs a ride and he’s not available, you can pick her up. Listen to what she says about him or their relationship. Make sure you never talk negatively about him though. You always want to have manners and class. At the same time, you should be dating and telling her about how much fun you’re having and the wonderful things you do on your dates. Eventually, if they do break up, write to me again and we’ll take it from there.
