The School’s Ethos

Shrewsbury School is a major boarding school of national reputation. Established in 1552, it is an Anglican foundation in which the life of the chapel, which welcomes members of all religious persuasions, continues at the heart of the school community. The ethos of the school is informed by the priority given to high standards of pastoral care and to belief in the education of the ‘whole person’ as an individual in his or her own right. The school’s fundamental aim is to encourage pupils to become caring, thoughtful, confident members of society – ambitious yet not arrogant; perceptive yet not precocious; interesting, interested and able to get on with people of all backgrounds. In order that this may be so, Shrewsbury will always strive to achieve the highest possible standards in the breadth and quality of its curricula; the provision and disposition of its staffing, facilities and resources, and the achievements, academic and other, of its pupils and staff. In order to sustain its ethos into the future, the school is committed to an on-going process of self-critical assessment, review and forward planning.

Shrewsbury School was last inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate in March 2017. The first inspection was a Focused Compliance Inspection, which concluded that the School is fully compliant in all respects with the highly rigorous regulations and boarding standards. The second was an Educational Quality Inspection, which reports on the quality of the School’s work. It focuses on two key outcomes: “the quality of pupils’ academic and other achievements” and “the quality of pupils’ personal development”. In both cases, the School was assessed as “excellent”, the highest available category.

The School’s Students The school has 789 pupils, aged from 13 to 18, of whom approximately 20% live overseas. Full Co-Education was introduced in 2014, following admission of girls into the Sixth Form in 2008. The current school roll is:

Total: 789 (629 boarding and 160 day) Boys: 542 (440 boarding and 102 day) Girls: 247 (189 boarding and 58 day)

Graduating Class Size: 195 Percentage of pupils receiving means-tested financial aid: 19.4% Academic Study In the Sixth Form, the school offers a total of 26 subjects. A Level courses are followed in most subjects, with the Cambridge Pre-U course offered as an alternative in Biology, Design & Technology, French, Geography, German, History, Philosophy & Theology, Physics and Spanish. Most pupils will take three of these courses, alongside either the Pre-U Global Perspectives course or the Extended Project Qualification, though some pupils prefer to take four principal subjects.

In Year 11, pupils study for a mixture of GCSE and IGCSE qualifications. Most pupils take 10 subjects, including English Language, English Literature and Maths, and all pupils study Biology, Chemistry and Physics. French is compulsory, and pupils then choose 3 or 4 options from a range that includes Humanities, languages (ancient and modern) and creative/practical subjects. Astronomy is also offered to GCSE level.

Shrewsbury does not provide students with a class rank or GPA.

Academic Extension work This is provided in a number of ways. Lectures: A weekly academic lecture programme welcomes visiting lecturers from around the UK, and pupils also travel to lectures at universities and specific academic institutions.

Competitions: Pupils take part in a range of national essay competitions, with recent successes in Classics, History and English. Shrewsbury has repeatedly represented the UK in the finals of the International Young Physicists’ Tournament, winning a Bronze Medal in 2015. Pupils also participate successfully in national Olympiad competitions in Maths and Science.

Academic Trips: Regular trips are undertaken, with recent examples including History visits to Berlin and Rome, language study visits to Argentina, France and Germany, and the Model United Nations team competing with significant success in Paris and at the EU.
