  • The Three-Franc Binge Beer Taxation Law
knowledge transfer Topic: Federal Office of Public Health CH-3003 Berne, www.bag.admin.ch April 2006/No. 55 The three-franc binge Beer taxation law. Beer is very popular with adolescents and a common binge drink – not least because the beer sold through retail outlets in Switzerland is very cheap. Three francs is all it takes to drink yourself into near oblivion. Against this background, health and prevention experts are calling for a massive increase in the tax on beer, because higher prices have been shown to affect consumption, particu- larly among young people. Michel Graf, Director of the SFA, also hopes that the National Council as the second chamber of parliament will be more receptive to the con- cerns of the prevention experts. He feels that at «the absolute minimum» the Federal Council should be em- powered to raise the tax on beer for health reasons. The fact that preven- tion has deliberately been excluded from the beer taxation law is just as «unacceptable» as the tax itself, which is far too low and «can in no way have a regulating effect on adolescent alcohol consumption, which would enable it to exert a preventive effect.» Simonetta Sommaruga, State Coun- cillor for Berne, feels that «a beer tax- ation law with no element of health protection is not a pure tax law but simply a bad tax law». Sommaruga believes that beer consumption is undergoing a «frightening develop- ment», and sees a clear need to rein- force prevention. Binge drinking by young people is unfortunately on the rise in Switzerland – not least owing to very low beer prices.

  • The Evolution of the UK Wine Market: from Niche to Mass-Market Appeal
beverages Article The Evolution of the UK Wine Market: From Niche to Mass-Market Appeal Julie Bower Independent Scholar, Worcester WR1 3DG, UK; [email protected] Received: 4 October 2018; Accepted: 8 November 2018; Published: 12 November 2018 Abstract: This article is an historic narrative account of the emergence of the mass-market wine category in the UK in the post-World War II era. The role of the former vertically-integrated brewing industry in the early stages of development is described from the perspective of both their distributional effects and their new product development initiatives. Significant in the narrative is the story of Babycham, the UK’s answer to Champagne that was targeted to the new consumers of the 1950s; women. Then a specially-developed French wine, Le Piat D’Or, with its catchy advertising campaign, took the baton. These early brands were instrumental in extending the wine category, as beer continued its precipitous decline. That the UK is now one of the largest wine markets globally owes much to the success of these early brands and those that arrived later in the 1990s, with Australia displacing France as the source for mass-market appeal. Keywords: UK wine consumption; UK brewing industry; resource partitioning theory; targeted marketing 1. Introduction The evolution of wine consumption in the UK is described by important socio-economic trends in consumer behavior that emerged in the 1950s. This coincided with a growing awareness within the alcoholic beverages industry that there was the need for new product development to satisfy the increasingly sophisticated and aspirational consumer.

  • Cauim Pepica – Notas Sobre Os Antigos Festivais Antropofágicos1
Enfim, o chefe decidiu que desejava conservar-me vivo.

  • Nordic Alcohol Policy in Europe: the Adaptation of Finland's, Sweden's and Norway's Alcohol
Thomas Karlsson Thomas Karlsson Thomas Karlsson Nordic Alcohol Policy Nordic Alcohol Policy in Europe in Europe The Adaptation of Finland’s, Sweden’s and Norway’s Alcohol Policies to a New Policy Framework, 1994–2013 The Adaptation of Finland’s, Sweden’s and Norway’s Alcohol Policies to a New Policy Framework, 1994–2013 Nordic Alcohol Policy in Europe Policy Alcohol Nordic To what extent have Finland, Sweden and Norway adapted their alcohol policies to the framework imposed on them by the European Union and the European Economic Area since the mid-1990s? How has alcohol policies in the Nordic countries evolved between 1994 and 2013 and how strict are their alcohol policies in comparison with the rest of Europe? These are some of the main research questions in this study. Besides alcohol policies, the analyses comprise the development of alcohol consumption and cross-border trade with alcohol. In addition to a qualitative analysis, a RESEARCH quantitative scale constructed to measure the strictness of alcohol policies is RESEARCH utilised. The results from the study clearly corroborate earlier findings on the significance of Europeanisation and the Single Market for the development of Nordic alcohol policy. All in all, alcohol policies in the Nordic countries are more liberal in 2013 than they were in 1994. The restrictive Nordic policy tradition has, however, still a solid evidence base and nothing prevents it from being the base for alcohol policy in the Nordic countries also in the future.
