2 From the Director

SBMA’s shining moments in 2013 were in its New Undertakings! Our fall fund raising event took on fresh sparkle and meaning as we transitioned to a brand new event, Artlights. At Artlights we focused on honoring worthy individuals in and from the community. Barbara K. Warner, long-time patron of the arts and special friend to SBMA, was recognized as “Friend of the Arts.” Jim Borden, beloved South Bend artist and a former teacher here at SBMA, received our “Carlotta Banta Artistic Achievement Award” and came to South Bend from his new home in Vermont to accept the award. A new award, the “Indiana to the World” award, was presented to world-renowned architect, Michael Graves, who was born in Indianapolis. Graves also traveled to South Bend to accept the award, inspiring guests with a moving talk about accessibility in architecture and design. It was a very special moment to hear Michael Graves, who was paralyzed from the waist down by a spinal infection, talk about his own challenges with accessibility and his resolve to help architects and designers understand and help to overcome the many obstacles faced by people with disabilities. The “sparkle” portion of the evening came in the form of the most innovative addition to Artlights, the “Art Slam.” Art Slam was the brainchild of some of the younger members of the SBMA board. Five “Art Fans” were selected from the community and invited to create a work of art, in any medium, which was based on a work in the SBMA permanent collection. Kelly Bellinger made a stunning, exotic desk, which was beautifully painted and sprouted branches from the back. Sara Miller’s spherical, ceramic pot, Thomas Gordon Smith’s beautiful watercolor, and Keaton Bloom’s clever, day-into-night painting were all wonderful additions to the evening. And David Matthews’ “living art”, a young woman dressed as Ed Paschke’s tattooed lady, “Heddy”, was, hands-down, the most spirited work of art produced in Art Slam!. Having this performance-piece mingle with the guests all evening gave the event a special pizazz! The event took place amidst the grandeur of the Palais Royale, the perfect setting for this great mixture of fun and elegance. The distinguished American photographer and environmentalist, Ansel Adams, was the focus of SBMA’s seventh annual American Series exhibition. Ansel Adams: Masterworks took place November 1, 2013 – January 12, 2014. Included in the exhibition were about 50 photographs from Adams’ “Museum Set”, a group of works he personally selected to represent his life’s work. The reach of the Ansel Adams exhibition extended well beyond St. Joseph County to include a regional, Midwest audience with interests in photography, environmental issues, art, history, and sustainability. The exhibition also offered strong opportunities to partner with other organizations, including the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame, the Center for History, and the Indiana Chapter of the Sierra Club. The exhibition inspired many in the community to become funding partners with SBMA in presenting the show and its related educational programs. We thank the individuals, corporations and foundations for their outstanding contributions to this event, and extend special thanks to Electronics Incorporated, the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County, the Florence V. Carroll Charitable Trust Foundation and the Convention and Visitors Bureau, South Bend/Mishawaka for their generous leadership gifts. Ansel Adams’ beautiful, ethereal, yet factual photographs hold an important place in the history of photography and we hope this exhibition helped to light a spark of interest in youth and adults alike, encouraging art-making and art appreciation – and the richness art can bring to life. Ansel Adams: Masterworks extended into the new year, closing on January 12, 2014. The strong interest in the exhibition, coupled with SBMA’s new determination to attract and harness the energy of the vibrant young professionals in the community, resulted in an event which will be the first of several in a series. Our first “Museum After Dark” event took place on the eve of the closing of the exhibition, January 11. The excellent attendance, engagement of the participants and joyful mood made it an event to be repeated. Look forward to renewed energy, vitality and opportunity at the SBMA “Museum After Dark” events in 2014 and beyond!

Susan R. Visser | South Bend Museum of Art Executive Director 1 Development and Cultivation

2013 was a year with successful initiatives aimed at broadening overall audience participation in museum activities, and providing meaningful entry experiences for the “first time” Museum goer. That first visit holds the potential to create a connection that will carry far beyond one event and translate into future support of our many programs and exhibitions.

Corporate sponsorships were aggressively and thoughtfully pursued for museum programs, initiatives and exhibitions, including in-kind contributions. Corporate relationships continued to be developed with positive results. These relationships will be nurtured well into the future to sustain these meaningful partnerships and the successful programs they have brought to fruition.

Artlights!, our inaugural fund raising event, was attended by over 200 people on October 24, 2013. Honorees included Michael Graves, who received the newly created Indiana to the World award; Jim Borden who received the Carlotta Banta Artistic Achievement Award; and Barbara Warner who received the Carlotta Banta Friend of the Arts Award. ArtSlam!, a significant component of the event, included art “fans” of SBMA Kelly Bellinger, Keaton Bloom, Dave Matthews, Sara Miller and Thomas Gordon Smith. Each selected their favorite artwork from the Permanent Collection of the Museum and created a work of art in response to it. These works were auctioned at the end of the evening. Preceding this event, “fans of fans” purchased votes online in support of their favorite. The ArtSlam artist with the most votes won the Golden Brush Award!

The event was a success thanks to the work of the committee: Marika Smith who chaired the event, Dayle Brown, June H. Edwards, Meghan Kirwan and Manette Tepe, and all the corporations and area merchants who rallied to the cause. Thank you to all! 2013 at a Glance

2 Annual Report 2013 | Marketing and Events

In 2013, the Museum’s marketing strategy focused on promoting exhibitions, membership, classes/educational programming and events. Electronic and social media (website, Facebook, Twitter, Constant Contact) were utilized as the dominant means of communication and promotion of Museum activities, directing recipients to our rebuilt website, southbendart.org. A monthly e-newsletter kept 2000 subscribers up to date with Museum happenings. Activities were posted on event and arts-related websites and press releases issued to local media outlets.

The receipt of a St. Joseph County Hotel-Motel Tax Board Tourism grant facilitated the rebuilding of our website, southbendart.org, which functions smoothly to promote programming and online purchase of memberships and classes.

Paid advertising included radio and print, promoting classes and exhibitions; media sponsorships were obtained to secure promotion of specific events and exhibitions, notably the Scholastic Art Awards, and the American Series exhibition, Ansel Adams, Masterworks. Print materials such as class schedules, posters and postcards supplemented these efforts.

The SBMA took advantage of marketing opportunities with local organizations and venues: the Morris Performing Arts Center window display promoting Ansel Adams, Masterworks; Downtown South Bend’s poster distribution; a booth at the Sunburst Races, an SBMA-themed Christmas tree decorated at Center for History and collaborative advertising with area museums, all aimed at generating awareness of SBMA programming. Opportunities for coverage on local TV, e.g., WNIT’s Experience Michiana, morning TV news and radio interviews increased our reach to a wider regional audience.

The Museum hosted a variety of events on First Fridays and other evenings aimed at increasing attendance in our galleries, awareness of our programming and developing new friends, members and donors in the community. Several of these were in partnership with local organizations:

Cosponsored by 88.1 WVPE and Century Center, the Meet Me series kicked off the season withMeet Me in the Gallery, which attracted close to 700 people for the opening of the Scholastic Art Awards in February.

• Artist Mary King’s gallery talk on March 9 about her art in Beautiful Industry stimulated dialog with a gathering of gallery visitors.

• The Spring Exhibition Reception on April 5 attracted a wide audience for the opening of Makers and Champions, South Bend’s Rich Artistic Legacy and Portals, the Northern Indiana Pastel Society members’ exhibition.

| South Bend Museum of Art 3 Marketing and Events, cont’d.

• An Artists’ Reception honoring local artists and the opening of the IVY Tech Juried Student Exhibition marked the June First Friday event.

• Meet Me on the Island, on July 5, cosponsored with 88.1 WVPE and Century Center attracted over 2,500 to Island Park for an evening on the river of art, music and mingling. Tickets are provided to members of both organizations as a benefit of membership.

• Biennial 27 headlined the August First Friday, with an artists’ panel dialogue. The SBMA offered art activities for children duringArtBeat in downtown South Bend on August 17, with SBMA faculty demonstrating, and items from the Dot Shop offered for sale.

• In Fall 2013, the promotion and event coordination support for several lectures, workshops and receptions related to Ansel Adams, Masterworks broadened the SBMA’s reach to new audiences. Many gallery visitors knew about the exhibition thanks in part to the SBMA’s ability to promote it via the new website and print ads in markets outside St. Joseph County, facilitated by a St. Joseph County Hotel-Motel Tax Board Tourism grant.

Marketing support for ArtLights, the SBMA fundraising event, included the promotion of ArtSlam, a competition among 5 artists for votes and the auction of their work, via the website, social media and online purchase of votes.

• Holiday in the Gallery in December concluded the year’s events with a musical performance by the John Adams High School Show Choir, and the opening of the SBMA Student Faculty Exhibition. 3 The SBMA hosted several events sponsored by other organizations in 2013 in the galleries, including a reception following the bus tour sponsored by the Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, the City of South Bend and the University of Notre Dame for new faculty/staff; the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County Annual Meeting; meeting space is made available to local arts organizations for meetings, and gallery rentals for private receptions contribute financial support for SBMA.

New faculty and staff of area colleges and universities enjoyed a reception in the Carmichael Gallery following a bus tour of the area’s cultural amenities offered by the Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, the City of South Bend and the University of Notre Dame.

4 Annual Report 2013 | Education Programs

Studio Classes Studio Classes supplied instruction in ceramics, weaving, knitting, oil painting, acrylics, photography, jewelry, watercolor, drawing, and soft pastels for children, teens, and adults. Five sessions of classes were offered in 2013. Our summer youth classes surged with enrollment as we offered more camps, classes, and a continued partnership with Southold Dance. A faculty of talented artists and educators inspired students through each class session—day, evenings, and weekends—and brought their passion and expertise to a wide range of subjects. Besides providing instruction, the classes create a sense of community, cultural dialogue, and peer group support.

School Programs Sculpture Quest Over 800 fourth and fifth grade students from Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation participated in a guided tour and activity program based in sculpture. This year’s programming was focused on the vocabulary of sculpture with a significant emphasis on the terms “abstract” and “texture”. SBMA staffer and local artist, Candie Waterloo, trained each group on additive sculptural processes as students shaped and molded clay into playfully funky organic sculptures. Students experimented with basic hand building techniques of slumping, coiling, and slab work. Students were also given a docent-led tour, which focused on sculpture from both changing exhibitions and our permanent collection. With the elimination of art teachers within this particular school district, SBMA provides a most critical opportunity for students to explore three-dimensional art materials and sculpture.

Perspectives 750 students from Mishawaka schools and area Catholic schools participated in an interactive museum program titled “Perspectives”. This joint program of the SBMA and the Snite Museum of Art provides 5th grade students with an opportunity to learn about the world around them, both today and in the past, through the eyes of artists. Students take visits to both institutions where they tour galleries and meet famous Americans, travel to exciting places around the , and uncover new stories about the America we live in. Additionally, gallery experiences are enhanced at both facilities through a number of hands on projects. At the Snite, students participate in a creative writing activity, which uses works of art as writing prompts. At the South Bend Museum of Art, students explore contemporary American art before heading to the studios to create a one-of-a-kind work of their own. Perspectives visits occur on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, October through December, and service hundreds of local schoolchildren.

| South Bend Museum of Art 5 Education, cont’d. Outreach Programs Festival of Banners 2013 marked the seventh year for Festival of Banners. Over 350 entries were received from artists of all ages. DTSB’s Executive Director, Aaron Perri, narrowed the entry pool down to 80 banners, which later adorned the streets of downtown South Bend. The theme, “DRIP DROP,” marked a new partnership with IUSB’s Center for a Sustainable Future and asked participating artists to think about the importance of one of our most precious natural resources: water. The results of this query were eighty 24” x 51” colorful and unique interpretations of this theme. Festival artists were given two sessions to paint their designs onto banners, with the help of local artists and museum volunteers. Designs were projected onto the banners to make the large scale easier for participants. Finished banners were unveiled at a press conference which included DTSB Ambassadors, City of South Bend employees, as well as Mayor Buttigieg in attendance. This year’s press conference exceeded our record attendance from last year as over 75 artists and family members came to celebrate this festive occasion. Festival of Banners is proudly partnered by The City of South Bend and Downtown South Bend, Inc. Homeward Journey In August 2013, SBMA and the Juvenile Justice Center partnered to create a unique mural entitled “Homeward Journey.” The project was part of SBMA’s summer outreach that introduces artists and art processes to the community. SBMA staff indentified the artist, provided the supplies, and helped to facilitate instruction alongside the artist.

Bill Tourtillotte, a local artist and Professor of Art at “Homeward Journey” is an Holy Cross College, served as the lead artist. To initiate the creative design process, the important collaboration students engaged in a discussion on how we accomplish goals and wishes in our lives. that marks a collection of To spark conversation, participants were asked, “what would you wish for or what would the “wishes of 48 teens and your goals be?” Their overwhelming response to this question was “HOME”. one artist”. Through a series of drawing exercises and suggested imagery, Tourtillotte compiled their imagery into a collage which was then enlarged and drawn onto an interior courtyard wall at the Juvenile Justice Center. Student participants painted the mural over the course of a couple of weeks. Starting Over Stepping Higher Starting Over Stepping Higher continued to be a successful partnership with The Center for the Homeless for the 16th year. This workshop provides guests from the Center with the opportunity to learn pottery, sculpture, drawing and/or collage. Tours are provided of the galleries with a focus on exploration and discovery. Class was scheduled every 6 weeks and served 115 adults. Kari Black, ceramic artist and educator, led SOSH. A Book and A Blanket – Feed a Mind Warm a Heart Wrapped in a cozy blanket, just imagine where a young child can go with a good book. In its 8th year serving the community, 200 books and blankets were distributed to our outreach families. Children ranging in ages from 1 to 14 years of age at El Campito Inc. and O.C. Carmichael Jr. Youth Center were this year’s recipients.

6 Annual Report 2013 | Family & Community Programs Family Days Six times a year, the Museum invites families into our classrooms and galleries for an afternoon of fun and free creative activities known as “Family Day”. Designed as a way for families to explore art and SBMA together, participants create projects with an emphasis on materials and process. Sometimes thematic and sometimes just for fun, our Family Day programs serve hundreds of visitors annually. Ansel Adams at SBMA In Fall 2013, SBMA celebrated beloved American photographer and conservationist Ansel Adams through a series of family-friendly programming. In conjunction with our American Series exhibition Ansel Adams, Masterworks, SBMA invited families to join us in our upper level studios for a afternoon of activities inspired by the love of landscape. Over 150 guests of all ages learned about conservation through art as we upcycled old paint cans into funky bird feeders. Participants were also introduced to a thrifty new technique as they learned how to use packing tape to create photo transfers, or homemade stickers, from Xeroxed images of Adams’ work. These transfers were applied to wooden blocks and transformed into one-of-a-kind triptych puzzles. Lastly, lots of tissue paper, foil, and Model Magic were used to create recycled relief landscapes that ranged from realistic to super imaginative. Creations ranged from whimsical winter landscapes to tropical Hawaiian oases to funky, futuristic skate parks. Participants experienced a unique opportunity to explore the works of Ansel Adams and his commitment to conservation in playfully creative ways!

SBMA also held a series of short educational workshops related to Ansel Adams’ works. Photography instructor Joshua Myers led two photography workshops with very different themes. In one, participants learned a brief history of photography as they explored the progression of photography from jurassic photograms to modern day Instagrams. The second workshop invited participants into our darkroom where they learned the art of developing photographs from start to finish, eventually leaving with a family portrait shot, processed, and conceived at SBMA. Roberston’s Apartments Aging in Place Group 2013 marked the second year of a unique community collaboration for SBMA. Partnering with the South Bend Heritage Foundation, the museum provides an important service to residents of Robertson’s Apartments, a senior living community, offering monthly art classes to residents as part of a brain health initiative. Classes offer a changing curriculum where residents are introduced to a variety of art processes and mediums, but more importantly, they actively engage their minds and bodies in art making, conversation, and community. Scholastic Art Awards 2013 marked SBMA’s second year as the official regional affiliate of the Scholastic Art Awards, formally titled The Northwest Indiana and Southwest Lower Michigan Region. SBMA is now responsible for directing art teachers and students across two states and 18 counties in a juried art competition serving children grades 7 through 12. This year’s exhibition season was especially exciting as it marked big growth! Participation was up by 10% from last year, and over 25 jurors whittled 2,565 entries into a mere 513 for inclusion in the gallery exhibit. Over $2,500 in cash awards and scholarships were handed out to participating students.

| South Bend Museum of Art 7 Exhibitions

The vision of the Exhibitions department of the SBMA is to be the preeminent regional exhibition space for emerging and mid-career artists while simultaneously securing a connection to our larger collective history through traveling exhibitions and cross-disciplinary programming. Through this multi-faceted approach, the SBMA fosters a regional community of artists and connects them to historical and contemporary cultural discourse on both the local and national level while ensuring art as an essential process through which we engage the world and enrich our lives.

The exhibition schedule for 2013 offered visitors a diverse range of artists, media and content through 12 exhibitions in 5 gallery spaces, as well as throughout the Century Center.

The Scholastic Art Awards opened 2013 with its usual exciting selection of work from area high school artists in the Warner Gallery. Juried from a pool of over 2,500 entries, 535 artworks in all media were on display with Gold Key award winners proceeding on to the national competition in New York, NY.

In the spring, Makers and Champions: South Bend’s Rich Artistic Legacy: 1841 – Present, offered reflections on the fine arts history of the area, showcasing important artists, people, and institutions that have contributed to the rich artistic heritage of South Bend and the surrounding area. Held in the Warner Gallery, Makers and Champions was organized in part to celebrate the release of a seminal book on the cultural contribution to our community. That project was a collaboration between the SBMA, Indiana University South Bend, Wolfson Press, and L.E.A.R.N. (Lifetime Education And Research Network), aimed at documenting the fine arts legacy of our area for future generations.

During the summer months, the Warner Gallery hosted Biennial 27. Juror Lisa D. Freiman, Senior Curator and Chair of the Department of Contemporary Art at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis, IN, selected 11 artists from 230 entries received from the Biennial’s 8-state region. Utilizing a variety of media and processes, their work provided a core sample of current artistic practices in the Midwest.

8 Annual Report 2013 | The fall exhibition marked the seventh installment of the museum’s American Series. Ansel Adams: Masterworks provided a rare opportunity for visitors to see one of Adams’s Museum Sets – works that he personally selected to represent his career. Nearly 50 photographs in all, the exhibition included many of his most treasured images, and offered a glimpse into Adams’s insight and love for the beauty he saw in America. The exhibition also included a small selection of historic cameras and equipment within an educational area where visitors could learn more about photography and Adams’s process.

The Art League Gallery hosted 3 exhibitions during the 2013 season. Mary King’s (Chicago, IL) paper collages provided an unexpected look at steel mills and other industries that are 4 still in operation in and near Chicago and Detroit. The SBMA welcomed Segura Studios to South Bend with an exhibition of prints produced by the studio in collaboration with numerous artists, including Elizabeth Catlett, Enrique Chagoya, Sue Coe, Luis Jiménez, Philip Pearlstein, Andres Serrano, James Turrell, and Frances Whitehead, among others. Closing 2013, Somewhere There provided a contemporary counterpoint to Ansel Adams: Masterworks. The images of local photographers Susan Moore, Steve Moriarty, Fred Slaski and Steve Toepp combined to explore how a sense of place locates us within the world and provides context to our experiences within it. As represented by the diversity of the work in this year’s exhibitions, the Art League Gallery continued to be a veritable laboratory for contemporary art as produced in the Midwest.

In the spring, the Jerome J. Crowley Community Gallery hosted Northern Indiana Pastel Society: Portals, a juried exhibition showcasing work by over 40 regional pastel artists. Portals was followed by the Creactive: Ivy Tech Community College Juried Student Exhibition 2013, featuring work by students in Ivy Tech Community College’s School of Fine Art & Design (SOFAD)’s program in Visual Communication, including graphic design, photography, environmental design, web design, film & video, as well as drawing, painting, and three dimensional design. Next, Art Matters: Stories from the SBMA, offered a unique look into the museum’s educational programs by asking the question, “Why do you think art matters?” The 2013 Community Gallery exhibition season closed with the annual showcase of work produced in the Museum’s education program by students and faculty, the 2013 SBMA Student/Faculty Exhibition.

Finally, 2013 also saw the installation of the ongoing exhibition (through May 2015), Sightlines. This collaborative exhibition between the Century Center and the SBMA featuring large artworks created by 6 selected artists from the region. All artworks in the exhibition are located in or outside of the Century Center, highlighting both the artworks themselves, but also the voluminous space and distant lines of sight that are available inside of the building. Sightlines visually activates and enlivens the Century Center and provides a unique experience for chance art encounters for its estimated 170,000 annual visitors, engaging them in a moment of artistic appreciation or contemplation — or even perhaps to challenge their preconception of “what is art?”

| South Bend Museum of Art 15 The Dot Shop The Dot Shop has grown in popularity since it opened in August 2010. It offers the art of fifty artists who work in pastels, oils, watercolors, ceramics, textiles, or jewelry with prices ranging from $.50 to $2,000.00. Artists with well-established reputations, including many of SBMA’s instructors, are represented as well as newcomers. Some live locally while others live in the region. There is art to please every age—school children’s favorite items are buttons, rings, and bags—and art to commemorate birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and other special occasions. Six volunteers and several museum employees staff the Dot Shop.

Volunteers Our volunteers provide the support necessary to the success of our operations, events and programs. In 2013 we continued our volunteer program by providing ongoing training and procuring new trainees for the Rotunda Receptionist & Dot Shop positions. The efforts of the volunteers who filled these positions resulted in over 1000 hours of service to the museum. Our Museum Board, committees, The Art League and the Docents combined their time and talents as well to coordinate events, tours, generate attendance and build support. Countless interns, hosts, and activity coordinators lent their time and support as needed. We thank them whole-heartedly for their ongoing support.
