Chairman’s Chatter Good Afternoon and welcome to The Trevor Brown Memorial Ground for our opening game of the season versus Fairfield Villa. I extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Fairfield and hope you join us in the bar afterwards for a drink, no matter what the result. The now completed closed season has been eventful to say the least and numerous changes have been made which in the long term will be for the betterment of Paget Rangers Football Club. I am pleased to welcome Martin Asante as our new head coach and have been impressed with his training methods and tactical deployment of the team in our friendly matches during the summer. We have ground out some creditable results, but we must now focus on the most important matter at hand and that is getting our first league points on the board today. The squad has been completely remodelled and I believe the professionalism displayed by the players in pre-season will stand us in good stead as we look to improve our discipline, morale and team spirit. Players retained from last season include Dave Arrowsmith, Michael Edmead, Mark Bennett, Rackeem Reid, Daisy and Martin Morris, Tom O'Callaghan, Josh O'Reilly, Kieran Deakin and Kurt White. This core of committed players have been supplemented by quality additions across the park in the form of; Peter Maguire (Chelmsley Town), Jacob Barnes (Rushall Olympic), Terence Carpenter (Bolehall Swifts), Sam Chilton (Fairfield Villa), Daniel Cullen (Coldfield Rangers), Billy Fagg (Bolehall Swifts), Justin Haughton (Boldmere), Matthew Price (Lye Town) and Jonathan Ashfall (Phoenix United). This group of players will continue to be supported by our excellent youth set up who have also strengthened with numerous players from academies and higher up the pyramid. Following on from the success of Jack Storer (who has now made his debut for Stevenage's first team), youth team 'keeper, Dominic Cooper-Edwards has spent time on trial at Oxford United's first team during the summer, further showing the great standards of coaching we have for a club at our level. You will notice that the team takes to the field today in our new adidas striped shirts, a design the club has never worn since establishment in 1938; the feedback from the design has been extremely positive and I look forward to seeing supporters reactions when our new look away kit is unveiled at United in a week's time. Unfortunately we do not have a shirt sponsor for our new kits at the moment, if you know anyone who would be interested in sponsoring the Bears for the upcoming season, please let me know as all help is appreciated. I firmly believe we now have the club set up in the correct way to enable us to reach our objectives and goals within the 10-year plan I established upon Paget Rangers re-formation. We must continue to strive to better ourselves, to learn and progress. The quote, ' I never lose - I either win or I learn from it', is never more apparent than the new can-do attitude we have amongst everyone involved with this football club. The Bears are on the rise and we will establish ourselves as one of the leading lights of non-league football in Birmingham. In two seasons we have managed to rise from the AFA 1st Division to Step 7 of the football pyramid, this is a fantastic achievement for all involved and we now aim to take this progression even further. I hope you all enjoy today's match and look forward to welcoming you to another Paget Rangers fixture in the near future. COME ON YOU BEARS!

Welcome today’s opponents: FAIRFIELD VILLA Fairfield Villa was formed in 1902, with the original headquarters at the Swan Inn in Fairfield, and the ground was at Wood Lane. They were members of the first league in which they were successful in their first season topping the league with a playing record of 1 defeat, 1 draw in 18 games. The club was disbanded in the early 1950’s but was reformed by Gill Webb and the current chairman Paddy Eades. In 1959 they began playing at the Recreation ground at Fairfield and re- joined the Bromsgrove league, with cup and league success in the late 60s and 70s. The Club then moved into the Kidderminster league and were Premier Division champions in the 1981/82 and 1983/84 seasons. In 1985 Fairfield joined the Midland Combination Football League and in the 1998/99 season the club won the 2nd Division title which resulted in the club needing to upgrade its facilities to play in Division 1. After a dispute with their Parish Council landlords Fairfield were forced into ground sharing with Bromsgrove Rovers for 2 seasons and Northfield Town for 1 season. They came to an agreement with the Parish Council and returned to their home the Recreation Ground for the Season 2002/03. 2005/06 saw the appointment of new managers Lee Shaw and Paul Oakes who led them to victory in the Presidents Cup and runners-up in the Worcester Junior Cup. In 2008/09 the coveted Worcester Junior cup came back to the club after 6 previous final defeats. Added to that they also won the President's Cup for the second time, and were finalists in the Smedley Crooke Charity cup. Fairfield also finished 4th in the League for the 3rd Time in four seasons. The 2009/10 season saw another 4th position finish in an enthralling season and Fairfield again managed to reach the Presidents Cup final but unfortunately lost on this occasion. In 2010/11 Marc Cosgrove joined the management team, and on the playing side Fairfield again finished in what is becoming their customary 4th spot. They also were runners-up in the Smedley Crooke Cup. The 2011/12 season was disappointing, as the transformation of the side saw several players come and go and this was instrumental in their worst ever league position (13th). Fairfield did make another Worcester county cup final appearance but lost the tie 4-1 to our old adversaries Archdale73. The season of 2012/13 saw the overhaul and redevelopment of facilities at the Recreation Ground. An F.A grant coupled with the club's own finances meant that the structure was reformed with the addition of a new officials’ changing block, a complete renovation of the player changing rooms with a disabled toilet and a brand new kitchen and storage garage. Fairfield also re fitted and redecorated the club room. On the playing front the first team finished 7th in a very competitive league but again lost another Worcester cup final. In 2013/14 Fairfield achieved their highest Midland Combination league position in finishing second behind Cadbury Athletic.

We’ve met before Paget Rangers and Fairfield Villa have only met on one previous occasion which was a highly dramatic Smedley Crooke Charity Cup quarter final which was played at the Recreation Ground last season.

Due to Ledbury Town’s withdrawal from the competition, Paget had progressed directly to the quarter finals where we had been drawn away to St Mary’s Midland Combination Division 1 side Fairfield Villa. The match turned out to be highly dramatic involving a Paget fight-back and a nail-biting penalty shoot-out.

Paget fell behind in the 12th minute following a free-kick award to Fairfield on the edge of the penalty area. Fairfield’s Andrew Nicol curled the kick over the wall and into the top corner beyond Paul Smith in the Paget goal.

Fairfield continued to dominate using the slope to their advantage, and Jamie Hatfield should have doubled the hosts’ lead when his header cannoned off the bar and he hit the post from the rebound.

Fairfield deservedly doubled their lead on 38 minutes when Nicol and Peter Jenvey combined to allow Hatfield to round Smith and walk the ball into the unguarded net. This finally shocked Paget into life and Mark Bennett saw his header cannon back off the bar before Dean Morris fired home from a corner to hand the Bears a lifeline. In the second half Paget dominated and deservedly levelled on 71 minutes as neat link up play from Luke Bradley, Josh O’Reilly and Bennett saw the ball fed to top scorer Daniel Zouch who rounded Leech in the Fairfield goal.

Fairfield substitute Scott Gaffney hit the post, while Paget also had an opportunity to win the tie but Bennett fired wide when one-on-one with the keeper.

After a cagey 30 minutes extra-time, the first 12 penalties were all converted but Fairfield missed their seventh only for O’Reilly to miss too.

At 8-8 Smith pulled off a fantastic save to hand Tommy O’Callaghan the chance to put Paget into the semis and he made no mistake, finding the bottom corner to win it. three 01 PAGET v Fairfield Villa:Layout 1 08/08/2014 09:47 Page 6

Manager’s Notes Good afternoon to all our supporters. Paget Rangers has a long history of success and as the newly installed Head Coach I understand the hunger to bring us back to where we belong. It will take time but is definitely achievable as we invest our time in our youth programme at Under 18s and Under 21s. Grass roots football is now producing high grade players who in the next couple of years will push Paget to new heights. It is my job to make sure the first team push on now and make a positive impression on the league attracting good players to the club who can match our aspirations. A club’s playing philosophy is everything and is the DNA that makes or breaks many clubs. It’s a slow process and starts on the training ground where players from youth to first team all play the same way. The future game is more about preparation and getting the attitude right in my opinion. Games are won when you earn the right to play. A great example of this has been displayed at Ajax, Liverpool and Barcelona. To do this coaches have to buy into the club philosophy and create an environment of learning where players can excel. Total football is great to see and exciting at times but we have to be adaptable in our approach and direct movement and play is just one of many alternatives we will use. This does not mean I am a supporter of the long ball but favour a mixed passing game with a quick counter. As a club we must adopt from top to bottom a “Can do “policy where everyone works for the betterment of Paget Rangers FC. Ask yourself what you can do to assist in this forthcoming season there are plenty of opportunities to move this club to where it belongs.

Paget in pre-season

Saturday July 5th Jaguar Daimler 2-2 Paget Rangers A Paget side including a lot of new faces took a two-goal lead against their opponents who fielded different teams in each half. The freshness of the ‘second half team’ helped Jaguar Daimler pull back the two goals to earn a draw.

Saturday July 12th Team Dudley 3-2 Paget Rangers Tuesday July 22nd Daventry Town 3-0 Paget Rangers Paget were not disgraced in their defeat away to opponents who play three levels higher. Goals from Mitch Piggon, Tommy Berwick and Ryan Howell sealed the win for Daventry.

Saturday July 29th Boldmere St. Michaels 5-0 Paget Rangers Paget suffered a defeat at the hands of their landlords who play two levels higher in the and were a week nearer full match sharpness as they open their league programme a week before Paget. Boldmere took the lead following a corner and scored a second shortly after the first-half drinks break. They extended their lead after 6 minutes of the second half before a penalty and a volleyed goal completed the victory for the Mikes.

Tuesday July 29th Paget Rangers 2-0 Ellesmere Rangers Paget clinched a notable victory against their higher ranked opponents through second half goals from Ashfall, who shot home powerfully from an angle, and Prince, who latched on to a through ball and slid his shot beyond the Ellesmere keeper.

Saturday August 2nd Paget Rangers 2-1 FC Glades Sporting Paget completed their pre-season programme with a narrow victory over fellow Midland Football League Division 2 side FC Glades Sporting who had stepped in at the last minute when Paget’s original opponents pulled out of the scheduled fixture. Paget played some good attacking football in an entertaining first half. Following a flowing move, an excellent save from the FC Glades ’keeper produced a Paget corner. From Matt Price’s excellent delivery, Dean Morris looped a header over the FC Glades defence into the far corner of the net. Marcus Brown doubled Paget’s advantage when he chipped the keeper later in the first half. Numerous substitutions in the second half made the game more disjointed but Paget still looked dangerous on the attack. With about 15 minutes left FC Glades pulled a goal back and only an excellent save from Paget substitute ‘keeper Cooper-Edwards prevented an equaliser. All in all, another morale boosting win over a team at the same level as Paget. five 01 PAGET v Fairfield Villa:Layout 1 08/08/2014 09:47 Page 8 Stats

Paget Rangers in the 1994-95 Midland Alliance – part 1. The 2014-15 season marks the inaugural season of the Midland Football League. It also marks the 20th Anniversary of the first season of the Midland Football Alliance, a season in which Paget Rangers became the first Midland Alliance champions. In a monumental campaign Paget would end up playing 69 games and, on top of the league triumph, would reach two cup finals, being victorious in one, play on two football league grounds and secure some other notable scalps in various other cup competitions. The Midland Alliance drew its initial membership from the strongest clubs in the Midland Football Combination and the West Midlands (Regional) League, both of which became feeder leagues to the new league. Each season the champion club of each feeder league was eligible for promotion to the Alliance and Alliance clubs could in turn be relegated to the feeder leagues. Whilst looking forward to the new challenge, expectations at Paget were probably not all that great, the team having only finished 5th in the 1993-94 West Midlands League Premier Division. However, with the legendary Eddie Caulfield in the manager’s seat ably assisted by Paul ‘Poke’ Edwards, a strong squad had been assembled to challenge in the league and no less than 7 different cup competitions. However, it all started so quietly – on Saturday August 20th 1994 with a goalless draw away at old rivals Oldbury United in front of 77 spectators. The only events of note appear to have been two early bookings for Paget players! Oldbury, like Paget, had joined the Alliance from the West Midlands League having finished 3rd in the previous season. They were to play 15 consecutive seasons in the Alliance before finishing bottom in 2008-09 and subsequently folding. Oldbury’s then home at The Cricketts remains a significant non-league landmark, the floodlights visible from the M5 motorway on the right travelling south between junctions 2 and 3. I was always concerned that an over zealous defensive clearance could cause havoc to the national motorway network but there’s no evidence that it ever did! Paget’s first home game in the Alliance took place at Coles Lane on the following Wednesday when they entertained Bolehall Swifts. Bolehall had joined the Alliance from the Midland Combination having finished 14th in the previous season. Bolehall are currently one step higher than the Paget in the Midland League Division 1 having finished 4th in last season’s Midland Combination Premier Division. The honour of scoring Paget’s first goal in the Midland Alliance went to Ian Paul who netted after 17 minutes in the 3-1 victory. The other goals were scored by captain Stuart Tucker after 47 minutes and Trevor Burroughs after 88 minutes in front of a healthy crowd of 147. The following Saturday Paget travelled to Shepshed Dynamo. Hailing from a small town in Leicestershire, the football club in Shepshed has had several identities and played in a variety of leagues. Following 17 seasons under the banner of ‘Charterhouse’, the club changed back to its original title of ‘Albion’ in 1992. Then, after two seasons, the club became ‘Dynamo’ when it joined the Midland Alliance from the Midland Combination having finished 4th in the Premier Division. Shepshed are now in the Premier Division of the Midland Football League after finishing 16th upon their return to the Midland Alliance after spells in the Northern Premier and . However, Paget cared little for Shepshed’s past as they swept to a convincing 6-1 victory. A hat-trick from Perry Mulvey along with two goals from Trevor Burroughs and another from Ian Paul sealed the win. In the next programme we’ll look at Paget’s progress in the FA Cup and against key league rivals. nine 01 PAGET v Fairfield Villa:Layout 1 08/08/2014 09:47 Page 12

Midland Football League (2014 - to date) Midland Football League was formed in 2014 as a result of a merger between the Midland Football Alliance and the Midland Football Combination. Midland Football Alliance (1994-2014) The Alliance was formed in 1994, taking its initial member clubs from the West Midlands (Regional) League and the Midland Football Combination, which had existed since before the Second World War, having originally been formed as the Birmingham & District League and the Combination respectively. Their catchment areas had gradually converged, and by the early 1990s the standard of play and geographical coverage of the two competitions were considered to be similar enough that a new competition was formed to cater for the best clubs previously split across the two leagues The league drew ten member clubs from each of the two leagues for its inaugural season. The clubs selected to join from the Midland Combination were Barwell, Boldmere St Michaels, Bolehall Swifts, Pershore Town, Sandwell Borough, Shepshed Dynamo, Town, Stapenhill, Stratford Town and West Midlands Police. Those selected from the West Midlands (Regional) League were Town, Chasetown, Halesowen Harriers, Hinckley Athletic, Knypersley Victoria, Oldbury United, Paget Rangers, Rocester, Rushall Olympic and Town. Paget Rangers won the first league championship by a margin of 12 points from Hinckley Athletic in the 1994–95 season, and gained promotion to the Southern League. The Alliance's status as a feeder to the Southern League was cemented when Armitage 90 were relegated in the opposite direction. Armitage went on to dominate the league in the 1995–96 season but disbanded midway through the season, with the result that their record was expunged from the table. For the 1999–2000 season the league increased in size to 22 clubs when two clubs were promoted into the Alliance but none relegated out of it. One of the promoted clubs was Oadby Town of the Leicestershire Senior League, the first time a team from that league had been promoted into the Alliance. Two years later, the league increased in size to 23 clubs as more teams joined than left, but Stapenhill resigned midway through the 2001–02 season, reverting the number of clubs in the competition back to 22. The league expanded to 24 clubs for the 2003–04 season, at the end of which, for the first time, Alliance clubs were promoted to the Northern , rather than the Southern League, when Rocester and Willenhall Town joined the more northerly of the two leagues. The following season Coalville Town became the first Alliance team to reach the first round proper of the FA Cup, a feat which was repeated in the 2005–06 season by both Chasetown and Leamington. With the creation of the by the league was officially defined as a Step 5 league. The champions of the Midland Combination, West Midlands (Regional) League and Leicestershire Senior League have continued to gain promotion to the Alliance, although in 2008 the new East Midlands Counties Football League was formed at the Step 6 level and it is anticipated that successful teams from the Leicestershire Senior League, which is officially a Step 7 league, will now move up to the new league and that the champions of the new league may in turn move up to the Alliance if they fall within its coverage area.

Midland Football Combination (1927-2014) The league was founded in 1927 as the Worcestershire Combination. The ten founder members were Oldbury Town, Reserves, Kidderminster Harriers Reserves, , Blackheath Town, Halesowen Labour, Highley Colliers, Old Carolians, Stewart & Lloyds () and Cookley St Peters. By the 1929–30 season four of the founding clubs had dropped out and the league had been reduced to just six teams, with the result that it held two separate competitions within the one season to bulk out the fixture list, but it then gained eight new teams and has continued to expand. The league changed its name to the Midland Combination in 1968 to reflect the drawing of clubs from a wider area. In the 2007–08 season, the league's representative team, drawn from clubs in Division One, reached the final of the FA National League System Cup.

League round up

Paget’s landlords, and Midland Alliance runners-up, Boldmere St. Michaels laid down an early marker when the Premier Division kicked-off last Saturday. A thumping 9-1 win at Rocester in which Kieran Clarke netted a hat-trick, showed that the Mikes are to be a force to be reckoned with. Westfields, who had to make what must be one of the longest journeys in Step 5 football, when they went to Long Eaton, suffered defeat as did Causeway United on their trip to Basford. Of the other new clubs, Lye won at Kirby Muxloe whilst Brocton drew 2-2 at Coventry Sphinx. Other first day winners were Alvechurch, Stourport Swifts, Coleshill Town and AFC Wulfrunians.
