An In-Depth Study of ‘Triptych’, from Seamus Heaney’s Field Work An In-Depth Study of ‘Triptych’, from Seamus Heaney’s Field Work Martin Connolly This paper focuses critical attention on ‘Triptych’, the sequence of three poems in Seamus Heaney’s 1979 collection Field Work. The sequence directly follows the opening poem ‘Oysters’, and by virtue of position alone commands attention. It is the first of a number of poems in the collection to address the conflict in Northern Ireland, and can be seen as a kind of public poetry, very different in tone, theme and style from early Heaney. This exploration derives from attempts to provide satisfactory answers to questions concerning elements within the sequence which resist smooth interpretation. My method of approach is largely chronological, in the sense that I go through the poems starting at the beginning and plough through to the end, stanza by stanza, sometimes line by line, attempting to guide the reader toward an understanding of the poem derived from apparent textual evidence. Early on, however, I do state what I think the poetic sequence is designed to be, and this argument informs my interpretation throughout. Yet, at every point, I provide what I consider a coherent rationale and logic for my critical opinions. I would certainly welcome debate on each and every point. The conclusions I have come to in regard to this poetic sequence, are, at times, negative, but not exclusively so. I have looked at this poetic sequence up close and - 129 - found it to be problematic in a number of areas. -

COUNTYDUBLIN, I was born in Glenelly, Co. Tyrone, on 26th September, 1900 and after leaving school I went to Hughes' Academy in Derry City. I lived at 17 Foyle St. in the private apartments of the group of buildings known as Conlan's Rooms My uncle administered this property. The Irish Volunteers used these buildings as Assembly Rooms. My "keeper" was Miss Conlan and Miss Reddy - both of these ladies were elderly spinsters. I think I actually became a member of the National Volunteers about the middle of 1914. I was intended for the Church, and while getting a grind from Ft. Jos. Lagan, C.C., Cranagh, preparatory to entering St. Columb's College - a brother of Dr. Lagan, the donor of the Lagan Cup to the Gaelic Athletic Association - I persuaded him to take me into a juvenile section of the local Company that he directed. This was probably the Fianna. When the Rising occurred in Dublin during Easter Week 1916, there was some activity in Derry. A number of the leading Volunteers were arrested and subsequently interned. -

This!thesis!explores!the!use!of!the!Irish!language!in!everyday!life!in!Derry!city.!I!argue!that! representations!of!the!Irish!language!in!media,!politics!and!academic!research!have! tended!to!overKidentify!it!with!social!division!and!antagonistic!cultures!or!identities,!and! have!drawn!too!heavily!on!political!rhetoric!and!a!priori!assumptions!about!language,! culture!and!groups!in!Northern!Ireland.!I!suggest!that!if!we!instead!look!at!the!mundane! and!the!everyday!moments!of!individual!lives,!and!listen!to!the!voices!of!those!who!are! rarely!heard!in!political!or!media!debate,!a!different!story!of!the!Irish!language!emerges.! THE CODE OF PRACTICE FOR FILM PRODUCTION IN NORTHERN IRELAND Northern Ireland Screen promotes Northern Ireland nationally and internationally as an important location for the production of films for cinema and television. Northern Ireland Screen provides a fully comprehensive information service, free of charge, to film and television producers from all over the world. WHY A CODE OF PRACTICE? Northern Ireland Screen is here to help complete projects safely and efficiently. We bring together all bodies affected by film-making and work with them and the general public to ensure a more film friendly environment. The creation of a code of practice for production companies to follow when filming on location in Northern Ireland will ensure closer co-operation with the public and better management on the ground. The object of this code of practice is to maximise Northern Ireland’s potential as a location while safe guarding the rights of its residents. Northern Ireland Screen encourages all feature film producers to agree to abide by this code of practice. NB: This Code of Practice is not intended for news and documentary crews of five persons or less. This Article examines its role as both an accountability mechanism and a truth process, and in doing so I consider the proposition that public inquiries are employed by governments not as a tool to find truth and establish accountability for human rights violations, but as a way of deflecting criticism and avoiding blame. THE GOVERNMENT OF MEMORY: PUBLIC INQUIRIES AND THE LIMITS OF JUSTICE IN NORTHERN IRELAND Angela Hegarty* INTRODUCTION That States commit violations of human rights is an undeni- able, if much denied, truth. These violations are often not offi- cially acknowledged until some time after they have been carried out, and the complete account of such violations may not emerge until the regime responsible has been removed from power. The events and the acts complained of are often denied by the State responsible until it is obliged, sometimes as a result of a political settlement, to submit to an investigation. Much of the dialogue about how to address such violations has therefore been in the context of transitional justice or of societies emerg- ing from conflict. -

Introduction
Introduction Historical Events of the 20th Century project was funded by Peace III and managed by Derry City Council’s Heritage & Museum Service. This learning pack has been designed to explore historical events of the 20th Century as they occurred in the North-West. It provides a learning programme to promote cultural identity and shared heritage in the Derry- Londonderry, Donegal, Strabane and Omagh areas. The units outlined are designed to be upbeat and fun for all ages, to enable learners to engage with abstract events on both a personal and theoretic level. Great care has been taken in the design of this programme to cater for kinaesthetic, auditory and visual learning styles. Learning Outcomes By the end of this programme learners will have gained meaningful knowledge of the following four periods of history and how they relate on a local level. World War I War of World War II Civil Rights and Independence, and Post War - and Easter Rising Civil War, 1950’s Troubles Partition Methodology These lesson plans have been designed to deliver learning through the following means: • All age groups and learning styles/ abilities have been catered for through a mix of resources to choose from for each lesson. • Initial activities will explore the participant’s prior knowledge so that any gaps in learning can be filled. • Visual and Auditory learning styles are catered for through the DVDs which will dramatise the events and encourage personal engagement with the facts presented. • Quiz sheets and discussion topics will allow for processing and thus internalising of learning. • The warm up and close down activities will enable participants to get some fun out of their lesson so that they engage with learning in a positive manner.
