One genre that was heavily revised was that of convict studies. Convicts and convictism and their role in the early development of white settlement have been much re-examined. A significant body of work has been focussed on convicts as unfree labour and unwilling emigrants. Because of this focus emphasis has been placed on convict agency and their ability to resist the system. As a body they have been dissected into micro groups to explain how the system then impacted on the individual. Few works have looked the other way and seen how the individual impacted on the system. By both their presence and their agency, convicts forced changes to the way in which the Empire conducted transportation. This thesis examines these aspects to see how this took place. That examination is then taken further to look at how changes to the system of transportation impacted not only on the obvious relationship between the various Australian colonies, but also those colonies relations with others within the British Empire, and ultimately on how it impacted on relations between the colonies and the metropolis. While writers such as Hirst, Sturma, Neal, and Atkinson have examined aspects of convict impact on colonial society and its development, their work has been largely introspective with their focus on New South Wales prior to 1840. This thesis aims to broaden the examination to include the effects created by continued transportation to Van Diemen's Land and, later, Western Australia. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS It would be highly remiss of me not to publicly acknowledge and thank those who have helped bring this thesis to life, and who have provided the support necessary to enable me to write it. The global nature of my topic necessitated a degree of international research by email. Responses and assistance were freely given in South Africa by Shirley Stewart at the Cory Library, Rhodes University, and Sue Ogterop at the African Studies Library, University of Cape Town; in London by Mari Takayanagi, the Archivist for the House of Lords; and in Ireland by John Delaney at the National Archives, Dublin, and Michael McGuire at the Limerick City Library. Two research trips were necessary to view original sources. The first, to the National Archive at Kew in London, was made available through grants from the School of History and Classics and I thank them for their support, without which the visit would not have been possible. The second was a flying visit to the Public Records Office of Victoria to view Legislative Council archives. I thank Robert McDonald at the Victorian Legislative Council for allowing me to use their records, and Marcus Dowd and the other staff at the PROV who made the visit so smooth — and highly profitable. I have been fortunate that almost all the material I have had to work with has been in English. Two documents did require translation and I thank Ric Fletcher for his assistance with the one in Afrikaans and Dutch, and Anita Pfleger for translating an article on German convicts and their transportation.     Emeritus Professor Garth Ian Gaudry 16 May 1941 { 18 October 2012 Emeritus Professor Garth Gaudry died in Sydney on 18 October 2012 after a long battle with a brain tumour. Those of us in the mathematical community will remember him for different reasons; as research collaborators, as a friend, a teacher, lover of red wine, rugby, music and many other things. Above all he will be remembered for leadership in promoting mathematical sciences in the community and politically. Personal connections Garth was my friend and colleague who came into my life at the end of the 1980s. An early encounter involved a meeting in a Carlton coffee caf´e with Garth, David Widdup and me. David was Executive Director of the Federation of Australian Scientific and Technological Societies (FASTS) and a wonderful friend of mathematics. Garth was the inaugural President of the Australian Mathematical Sciences Council (AMSC) and I had just become secretary. Garth and David were discussing a press release with what I can only describe as happy enthusiasm. As the language of the press release became more and more colourful, I thought this is going to be an interesting time. So it proved to be. Early history Garth’s family history dates from the First Fleet. It is a fascinating story of which he was rightly proud and so I have reproduced part of a speech his wife Patricia gave at a dinner for his 70th birthday as an appendix. He was the son of a Queensland primary teacher and spent his first nine years in Rockhampton. His father then became head teacher at Tekowai outside of Mackay and Garth completed his secondary education at Mackay High School, riding his Obituary:GarthIanGaudry 43 bike five miles each way.

    The Pandora Story Although reasonably successful in her challenging mission— capturing 14 of the 25 Bounty mutineers in Tahiti—HMS Pandora came to grief on the Great Barrier Reef. She was hulled on what’s now known as Pandora Reef, and sank in 30 metres of water, 120 km east of Cape York. Many died—crew and prisoners alike. But there were many more amazing feats of survival and seamanship. In this section, we explore the events surrounding the Pandora’s final voyage … Oswald Brett's impression of the Pandora's last moments afloat. Captain Bligh's remarkable story of survival The Bounty mutineers set Captain William Bligh adrift with 18 men in an eight-metre, two-masted launch. He had been allowed to take some navigational equipment and papers, and enough food to last for five days. The 19 castaways tried to supplement their rations with food from Tofua. All but one escaped with their lives following an attack by hostile Tofuans. Fearing to make another landfall, Bligh decided to head straight for Timor-about 3600 (nautical) miles (about 6480 km) away. "We had no relief with the day save its light. The sea was constantly breaking over us and kept two persons bailing, and we had no choice how to steer for we were obliged to keep before the waves to avoid filling the boat." Dodd Bounty (Bligh's journal entry for 14 May 1789) The cold and wet conditions in the launch were agonising. The exhausted men bailed constantly. What little food they had quickly became wet and almost inedible.

The Daytime Fellowship meeting in July was well attended, a talk by Director John Arthur Phillip 4-5 Boyd on his recent trip to Japan and Canada, was warm and invigorating to the accompaniment of 'soup and damper'. Back in History 6 Your Board of Directors has met on two occasions at 'workshops' to plan for the future.
