  • Came the Dawn : Memories of a Film Pioneer
ICIL M. HEPWORTH a film pioneer The Dawn comes to Flicker Alley Still a familiar figure in Wardour Street, Mr. Cecil Hepworth is a pioneer of British Cinema. In his autobiography he has a fascinating story to tell. They were simpler, sunnier days. Hepworth began in the 'showmanship' period in the late 'nineties, carrying his forty-second films to lecture-halls all over the country, where frenzied audiences demanded their repetition many times at a sitting. From the 'fairground' period he helped nurse the cinema to the time of the great Hepworth Company at its Walton-on- Thames studios. To those studios came famous stage actors, men of mark in many fields, anxious to try the new medium. In those studios many 'stars' of yesterday made world-wide reputations: Alma Taylor, Chrissie White, Gerald Ames, Ronald Colman, Violet Hopson, Stewart Rome, names remembered with deep affection four decades later. From Walton-on-Thames films were dispatched in quantity to the world, even to the United States before the Hollywood era. Conditions, if not primitive, were rudi- mentary in the earlier days; the grandiose notions of the industry today were un- dreamt of; and, most marvellous of all, leading actors and actresses played for as little as half a guinea a day (including fares), and were not averse to doing sorting, filing and running errands in their spare time. • DICKENS on SCREEN, BFI Southbank's Unprecedented
PRESS RELEASE 12/08 DICKENS ON SCREEN AT BFI SOUTHBANK IN FEBRUARY AND MARCH 2012 DICKENS ON SCREEN, BFI Southbank’s unprecedented retrospective of film and TV adaptations, moves into February and March and continues to explore how the work of one of Britain’s best loved storytellers has been adapted and interpreted for the big and small screens – offering the largest retrospective of Dickens on film and television ever staged. February 7 marks the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens’ birth and BFI Southbank will host a celebratory evening in partnership with Film London and The British Council featuring the world premiere of Chris Newby’s Dickens in London, the innovative and highly distinctive adaptation of five radio plays by Michael Eaton that incorporates animation, puppetry and contemporary footage, and a Neil Brand score. The day will also feature three newly commissioned short films inspired by the man himself. Further highlights in February include a special presentation of Christine Edzard’s epic film version of Little Dorrit (1988) that will reunite some of the cast and crew members including Derek Jacobi, a complete screening of the rarely seen 1960 BBC production of Barnaby Rudge, as well as day long screenings of the definitive productions of Hard Times (1977) and Martin Chuzzlewit (1994). In addition, there will be the unique opportunity to experience all eight hours of the RSC’s extraordinary 1982 production of Nicholas Nickleby, including a panel discussion with directors Trevor Nunn and John Caird, actor David Threlfall and its adaptor, David Edgar. Saving some of the best for last, the season concludes in March with a beautiful new restoration of the very rare Nordisk version of Our Mutual Friend (1921) and a two-part programme of vintage, American TV adaptations of Dickens - most of which have never been screened in this country before and feature legendary Hollywood stars.

Escape into Nature: the Ideology of Pacific Spirit Regional Park by Marina J. La Salle M.A., The University of British Columbia, 2008 B.A., Simon Fraser University, 2006 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Anthropology) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) July 2014 © Marina La Salle, 2014 ABSTRACT This dissertation investigates the ideology of Pacific Spirit Regional Park, an urban forest adjacent to the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Using the tools of archaeology and anthropology, I analyse the history, landscape, performance, and discourse of the park to understand Pacific Spirit as a culturally-constructed place that embodies an ideology of imperialism. Central in this dynamic is the carefully crafted illusion of Pacific Spirit as a site of “nature,” placed in opposition to “culture,” which naturalizes the values that created and are communicated through the park and thereby neutralizes their politics. They remain, however, very political. The park as nature erases the history and heritage of the Indigenous peoples of this region, transforming Pacific Spirit into a new terra nullius—a site to be discovered and explored, militaristic themes that consistently underlie park programs and propaganda. These cultural tropes connect to produce a nationalistic settler narrative wherein class ideals of nature and community are evoked in the celebration of Canada’s history of colonialism and capitalist expansion—paradoxically, the very processes that have caused the fragmentation of communities and ecosystems. The park as nature also feeds into the portrayal of this space as having been saved from development and, as such, an environmental triumph.

  • Copyrighted Material
Part I History and Contexts: From Image to Sound COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL 1 Literary Adaptation in the Silent Era Judith Buchanan When the nascent moving picture industry emerged in the 1890s, its signifi cance in technological, social, and economic terms quickly became apparent. Less clear, however, was the dominant use to which moving pictures should be put. What did they do best? Through what sort of subjects could they most effectively broadcast their technological wizardry, showcase their artistry, and maximize their returns? Was this a medium for recording the world with previously untapped verisimili- tude, or a medium in which the fantastical imaginary could be given rein as never before? A vehicle for exploring life as it was, or life as it might be? A medium of description or creation? A mechanism or an art form? Film offered what James Monaco has termed a “ neutral template ” ( 2009 : 45) to be appropriated differently by producers according to their priorities, interests, and broader thinking about the medium ’ s strengths and potential. And surveying the uses to which this “ neutral template ” was put in cinema ’ s pioneering years (1896 – c.1906) reveals no immediate consensus about where the industry thought it should principally channel its ener- gies. This sustained equivocation about what sort of fi lms it should be producing is graphically refl ected in the diverse nature both of production company output and of exhibitors ’ fi lm programs across this period. An 1896 Edison catalogue advertising its fi lms to exhibitors, for example, reveals much about the company ’ s breadth of production. Each fi lm subject that Edison had for sale is, as the catalogue introduction announces, “ tabulate[d] and concisely describe[d] .
