  • Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton to Be Staged at the Public Theater | Playbill
NEWS Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton to Be Staged at the Public Theater BY ADAM HETRICK MAR 06, 2014 Hamilton, the new musical by Tony Award-winning In the Heights star and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, which explores the life of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, will premiere as part of the Public Theater's 2014-15 season. Lin-Manuel Miranda (Photo by Corey Hayes) Formerly titled Hamilton Mixtape, the new musical features Miranda in the title role, under the direction of Tony Award-nominated In the Heights director Thomas Kail. Performances are scheduled to begin Jan. 20, 2015, for a run through Feb. 22. The Public Theater engagement is supported by Jeffrey Seller, Sander Jacobs and Jill Furman, all of whom helped usher Miranda's In the Heights to Broadway in 2008. Inspired by the book "Alexander Hamilton" by Ron Chernow, the musical incorporates historial gures such as George Washington, Aaron Burr, James Madison and Thomas Jefferson. Miranda previously performed a song from Hamilton for President Obama and the First Family at the White House in 2009. "Lin-Manuel Miranda is a marvel, but nothing could have prepared us for the astonishing achievement of Hamilton," Public Theater artistic director Oskar Eustis said in a statement. "Alexander Hamilton was born in the West Indies, the only Founding Father who was an immigrant, and Lin's genius is to tell the story of the birth of the United States as an immigrant's story. The energy, the passion, joy, tragedy, and raw intelligence of this show are stunning." Miranda is the Tony and Grammy Award-winning composer-lyricist of In the Heights.

In particular, I want to thank Emmanuel Wilson, Jenna Chrisphonte and Lily Dwoskin at the Drama To Skills who have done – just like a couple days just turned this thing around so fast and all of you I know who've gotten the word about this. So this came about because I have been showing up for a thing that maybe some of you know called Amplifying Activists Together, which is a bunch of theater people who meet on Friday's and do phone calling to support progressive legislation and progressive change in New York State and New York City. I want to say that this event is a nonpartisan event, but I'm just going to tell you how we came to – how this came to happen. A couple of weeks ago, an activist named Caroline Cowan came to talk to us about a bunch of things. And one of the things she talked about was the selection. And she said something that really stuck in my brain; which was that there are a lot of offices being turned over right now, and the city is going to be a different city on the other side of this, because we're going to have so many brand-new elected officials.

This year’s recipients were selected by an expert panel consisting of Maria Goyanes (Associate Producer at The Public Theater), Amanda Green (Bring it On: The Musical) and David Yazbek (The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Women on the Verge of Nervous Breakdown).
