Native or Suitable Plants City of McCall The following list of plants is presented to assist the developer, business owner, or homeowner in selecting plants for landscaping. The list is by no means complete, but is a recommended selection of plants which are either native or have been successfully introduced to our area. Successful landscaping, however, requires much more than just the selection of plants. Unless you have some experience, it is suggested than you employ the services of a trained or otherwise experienced landscaper, arborist, or forester. For best results it is recommended that careful consideration be made in purchasing the plants from the local nurseries (i.e. Cascade, McCall, and New Meadows). Plants brought in from the Treasure Valley may not survive our local weather conditions, microsites, and higher elevations. Timing can also be a serious consideration as the plants may have already broken dormancy and can be damaged by our late frosts. Huds.) was initiated on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium. In the presence of benzylaminopurine (BAP) numerous adventitious buds formed, which developed into shoots. Presence of indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) in media significantly decreased number of buds, but increased development of lateral roots. On hormone-free medium shoots successfully rooted and developed flowers and viable seeds that formed another generation. Shoot cultures of B. perfoliata inoculated with suspension of Agrobacterium rhizogenes strain A4M70GUS developed hairy roots at 3 weeks and they were cultured on hormone-free MS medium. The plant is widely distributed in the states along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, and is considered to be abundant in the southern portion of its range. It is rare in New York and New England at the northeastern limits of its distribution. Sabatia stellaris is an annual that usually grows as one main stem with branching on the upper half. In the northern part of its range, plants grow to 20 cm. Flowers consist of a 4 to 7-lobed corolla that ranges from crimson-pink to light pink and sometimes white. The white-flowering form is widespread in the southern part of its range; however, this form constituted 75% of a Connecticut population in 2003, which is considered the first documentation of this form in New England. As an annual, S. stellaris exhibits extreme variability in the number of plants found at an occurrence in a given year. For example, in 2002 the estimated number of plants at three of the extant New England populations numbered about 1000, with an absence of plants from the fourth occurrence. -

42 (2): (2018) 223-229 Original Scientific Paper Bioactive extracts of Gentiana asclepiadea: antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antibiofilm activity Olgica Stefanović1✳, Braho Ličina2, Sava Vasić 1, Ivana Radojević1 and Ljiljana Čomić1 1 Department of Biology and Ecology, Faculty of Science, University of Kragujevac, Radoja Domanovića 12, 34000 Kragujevac, Republic of Serbia 2 Department of Biomedical Sciences, State University of Novi Pazar, Vuka Karadžića bb, 36300 Novi Pazar, Republic of Serbia ABSTRACT: Extracts of the aerial parts and roots of the wild-growing medicinal plant Gentiana asclepiadea were analysed for their antimicrobial, antibiofilm, and antioxidant activity with quantification of the total phenolic and total flavonoid content. Antimicrobial activity was tested against pathogenic and spoilage bacteria, yeasts, and moulds using the microdilution method. The strongest antibacterial activity was detected on Bacillus species, where minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of from 0.16 mg/mL to 5 mg/mL were obtained, while antifungal activity was low to moderate, with MICs between 1.25 and 20 mg/mL. In the crystal violet assay, the extracts inhibit 50% biofilm formation in the concentration range of from 2.12 to 37.04 mg/mL. Staphylococcus aureus, S. aureus ATCC 25923, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 biofilms were the most sensitive to the presence of extracts. The extracts rich in phenolic compounds showed good DPPH-scavenging activity, with EC50 values between 181.3 and 614.3 μg/mL for extracts of aerial parts and from 426.67 to >1000 μg/mL for root extracts. Even though G. asclepiadea has long been traditionally used, its biological activity is still insufficiently explored, so the obtained results are significant for contributing new knowledge about the plant’s medicinal properties.
