Arrivò senza essere troppo convinto della scelta in un’epoca in cui i giocatori americani cercavano di fare fortuna – o almeno di fare la squadra – nella NBA e se non ci riuscivano si dedicavano ad altro. Nel caso di Mike “altro” era il ristorante di famiglia a Myrtle Beach nel South Carolina. Il fratello maggiore Dan aveva fatto così: fallito l’ultimo tentativo di giocare nella NBA, aveva abbracciato full-time la carriera di allenatore a livello scolastico. L’opzione europea era molto meno di una opzione di riserva. Di solito era solo un modo per fare un’esperienza di vita lontano da casa, divertirsi giocando a basket, guadagnare un po’ di soldi e poi tornare negli Stati Uniti ad occuparsi di cose serie. Skip Thoren venne a Milano, vinse la Coppa dei Campioni, e tornò a casa senza guardarsi alle spalle. Era il 1966. Ai tempi di D’Antoni le cose stavano cominciando a cambiare solo gradualmente. Mike aveva giocato nella NBA, aveva conosciuto la ABA.
